How A Luxury Ship Gets Built In 6 Months - Part 1 | Britain's Greatest Ships | Spark

Ғылым және технология

The Queen Elizabeth will be one of Britain’s greatest ships. The new pride of the Cunard Line is being built at a cost of £350 million. This documentary gives privileged access to the construction of an exciting new generation of ocean-going liners; a 92,000-tonne ship designed to double as a transatlantic express and a cruise ship. Our cameras were there at the laying of her keel; we follow the building of her superstructure, the installation of the massive engines, the fitting out of sumptuous staterooms, recruitment of exceptional staff - from the captain down. This is a story of great engineering endeavour, brought alive by unique archive film of the first Queen Elizabeth and the legendary Queen Mary. It will intrigue and fascinate those who love tales of the sea; of giant ships and of maritime engineering and of the human side of creating and manning one of the world’s greatest ships.

This ship is not an ocean liner, but a cruise liner. It is the sister ship of other Carnival ships. Only Queen Mary 2 is an ocean liner and the only one in service since the retirement of Queen Elizabeth 2 (1969) in 2008.

@33:38 the artist says he wanted to be an engineer but his maths ability is virtually nonexistent. That may be the case as he claims but his artistic painting skills certainly make up for any shortfall in his mathematical ability. His paintings are exceptional.

At 31:10, there’s a painting of the three German giants of Hamburg-Amerika at Southampton Docks in 1922. I believe one of the only times the three great sisters were seen together in the one place. By this time though, they’d been appropriated by the Allies as war reparations. Originally the three great sisters-all much larger than the Titanic and her Olympic Class sisters-were (nearest in the painting to furtherest away) USS Leviathan of the United States Lines ex Vaterland, Cunard’s RMS Berengaria ex Imperator and lastly White Star’s RMS Majestic ex Bismarck. Each was larger than the last. Imperator was the first of the class, and the smallest followed by Vaterland and lastly Bismarck. Hamburg-Amerika’s Albert Ballin, their sponsor and builder, was so heartbroken at losing his three great ships to the Allies at the cessation of hostilities at the end of World War One, that he ended up taking his life over it. A man truly committed to his ships, and quite a lovely colour painting of a famous photo…

Don't really give a damn. The US had shipyards that built American ocean liners. Britain had the Harland and Wolfe yards that built the Cunard Liners.; the remains of that yard apparently are still around. British and American workers building their "national flag" ships. And let's not forget British and American crews manning their national flag ships.

In fact QE2 was actually christened "Queen Elizabeth the Second" (II), by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which was not what Cunard wanted, her majesty named the after "herself", Cunard to save face, apparently, coined the name QE2, and she's need known as Queen Elizabeth 2, ever since. You can Google the launch of QE2, and see the launch...

Margaret Thatcher had the good common sense to realize that British workmanship (well 90% of it) became a joke after 1945. Blame your bolshie unions. British Manufacturing on a profit basis became untenable. The price was too high and the product was cr@p. Plus, unlike many other nations....the UK was paying millions to the USA for another 50 years....The USA invested that money in Germany & Japan. Plenty on YT that explains it all........ Get off yer socialistic flat-tired-bike! Do some fact finding.

Andrew: Do some research.....the reality will soon become apparent. Simple fact: Clyde Ship Builders cannot build a ship of this size due to natural constraints. Then there is the capability to supply the relevant materials, in any time frame. Oh! And remember... a certain politician [with Scottish roots] declared that all the youth need today was a plastic diploma from a plastic university...that panned out well, eh? (Must be the most underpaid "graduates" in the western hemisphere flipping burgers.......) Then combine that with the fact that THIS Italian shipyard is heavily subsidized by its Government....which in turn is subsidized by the EU..... But for how long? The Italians are likely to be the next to do an Italian Job on that membership..... ITEXIT (?) Closely followed by France I would wager. Then, where will THEIR capacity be to compete ...on a level playing field? The hardest workers & innovators in the EU are getting rather miffed at their recompense..... compared with some members who pay little, yet get maximum benefits. It Ain't Working. Is it? The EU has become a parody of the old USSR..... Great for some members....terrible for others. Both systems are proving unworkable. (Look where that has got the world, 2023.....Ukraine.)
