How A Kid With $0 Created Nike

Get started with Shopify for FREE: shopify.co.uk/magnatesmedia
The story of Nike - this Nike documentary tells the history of Nike, starting with Nike founder Phil Knight first imagining the idea of importing Japanese running shoes. We’ll look at the struggles Phil had building his company, dealing with suppliers, and handing controversies Nike was involved in. We’ll also look at how Nike started out as Blue Ribbon Sports, but why they changed their name and brand to Nike. We’ll even cover Nike’s IPO and selling their shares on the stock market. There’s plenty of entrepreneurial lessons and marketing strategies in this inspiring business success story - but as with any big company, there’s also a darker side. This MagnatesMedia mini movie aims to cover the full story of Nike, the rise of Phil Knight’s business empire.
It all began while working on an assignment to invent a new business. On a piece of paper Phil Knight wrote: "Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Did to German Cameras?" You see, Phil had noticed how two Japanese camera companies, Nikon and Canon, had replaced German cameras in the market which used to be more dominant, and he wondered if the same thing could happen with running shoes. Now at the time, two German companies, Adidas and Puma were the leading running shoe brands in America, and they had a very strong hold of the market. But Phil Knight had heard the Japanese were experimenting with some new shoe designs, and he also knew that it would be cheaper to produce shoes in Japan as well. So Phil got extremely invested in this assignment for his business class, and genuinely started to believe there was a great business opportunity here to import Japanese shoes into the American market. But when Phil presented this to the class, nobody else seemed to see it that way. He even told some of his friends about the idea, but none of them seemed to pay much attention either. Of course, if Phil did want to actually pursue this idea himself, he knew how difficult it would be. He didn’t know anyone in Japan to reach out to, and he knew absolutely nothing about importing Japanese shoes, or even how to sell them in America for that matter. So, could he really just do it? #Nike #Business #documentary #entrepreneur #business #entrepreneurship #company #magnates

I'm from Sri Lanka where we have quite a few Nike factories and innovation centers around. To say the least production of NIKE and similar branded goods in this part of the world have changed people lives to a great extent. Working conditions of these factories are great nowadays. These factory employees are given transport, buffet type food(not fancy), education for their children, insurance and great career growth. If I' not mistaken after these scandals reported in early 2000s NIKE and similar brand introduce some of the strict compliance policies which resulted in above effective changes. Still these trade partnerships bring in huge chunk of foreign revenue to the country, enabling a country ruined by political cartel to survive.

They’re informative and addicting and one of my favorite parts is that you can watch the video and enjoy the content or just shut the phone off and listen to it like a podcast. A lot of docs rely on visuals to help them communicate their points but with you, you do a great job of visualizing what your talking about with just your words. Meaning I could just listen to the video without having to watch it but if I wanted to, I could. Great for people like me who work and can’t watch their screens

One thing not mentioned with the lawsuit was the design of the Mexico sneaker (later renamed Cortez) and that Nike had plans to produce the same sneaker, but under the Nike brand. This was an interesting case because while the shoe design and sales were originally Onitsuka Tiger, it was Bill Bowerman who made a lot of improvements to the shoe. At the end, the courts decided that both sides got to produce the shoe and Nike got to keep the Cortez name.

I wouldn't argue that before in the time of innovation, that is to say: so many opportunities in terms of original concept ideas, was hard to kickstart, with a little self-confidence one can come a long way but none of these things matter as much as actually having a high-quality idea as an improvement for instance on an already existing product or what's even better is to have an original idea for a product based on the gap in the market which in the times of old, it seems the world was full of. Improving on already existing ideas can be done even today when the gaps of original ideas already for a huge part have been filled, all be it probably a bit difficult because already probably all the major companies in their respective fields have departments for this.
