How A Harmonic Balancer Breaks

Welcome to Buckley's Auto Care. 302-999-8285. www.buckleysaut....
Today we have a great example of how a harmonic balance can separate and cause a loud ringing sound inside your engine.
The harmonic balancer is attached to the engine crank shift. It contains the large pulley that helps drive the rest of your accessory components, such as your power steering, air-conditioning, water pump, and any other accessory pumps.
The harmonic balancer is typical to piece unit with an outside ring that contains the pulley and the inside a insulated piece of vulcanized rubber.
These balancers typically can start to wear anywhere between 75 and 150 thousand miles.
It's best to have them inspected every time you're in for service along with your belts and other police to make sure that the bearings are in serviceable condition.
Thank you,
Buckley's Auto Care

Great video.. This is exactly the reason why I've bought 2 new spare crankshaft pulleys for my car because the ones on my car are built like swis cheese..lol

What if no noise, but crankshaft pulley wobbles slightly while running?

Thank you for the video, We had a Harmonic balancer and tensioner pulley fell off from the engine hood 2 month ago while waiting on a stop sign, Smoke came out with a high pitch sound. There was a " BOOM" sound when the parts fell off. Van was towed. Then a month later after Firestone replaced the parts, Whatever they replaced, fell off from the engine again, the van was dead and towed, I noticed that the bearing for the pulley was slapped in half. They change the parts again at no cost for the warranty. The van is Honda Odyssey 2007, currently has 92000 miles on it. It happened when it had 88000 miles on it . What's going to happen if this happens again when driving 60 miles/ hour? Is it worthwhile for me to keep this van for my family? It will be really nice if anyone with experience can answer this question. Thank you very much

Aowei - Not sure what keeps breaking, but when a balancer fails, we always replace all the pulleys and belt tensioners. That way everything is no and aligned properly. Your Honda is low mileage and they last quite a long time. I wouldn't lose confidence over this situation. - Thanks - Greg Buckley.

Is it possible for the ribbed part to come apart and expose a "smooth surface" on the pulley. I have a 1999 crown Vic and I got a new belt put it on and still have way to much play with a new tension pulley even installed but I'm looking at a smooth pulley but the diagram shows the ribbed part of the belt is to go on the smooth surface.... I hope I explained that right. Well when I look up the harmonic balancer none of them are a smooth surface all are ribbed. Ugh

My car was shaking violently, like it was bouncing like crazy. I don’t know much about cars so I did research. I thought my car had some sort of misfire, but I didn’t have any gas coming out of the exhaust (it could still be a misfire I think), and turns out a bad harmonic balancer can cause the sense issues. I’ve also had problems with my belts in the past, so I think that may be the issue. I can’t drive my car, I’m getting it towed to a mechanic tomorrow

Hello I gotta replace the crank sensor for 05 grand prix gt. 320k. I was told the crank balancer/pulley/harmonic balancer will break when taking it off the get to the sensor. By speedy auto, after just spending 1200 on repairs that dont effext drivability. Is this tru?

Is it possible for an engine to lock up because of a bad harmonic balancer..maybe a locked up crankshaft. Anyone ever encountered this because of bad balancer?

What is the metal on the harmonic balancer that goes around the crank is broken to pieces but every thing rotates without it and is intact? When installing new one the crankshaft locks up?

Hey could you look at my video and tell me what you think most people are saying flexplate and torque converter and it sounds like it’s coming from there but one guy said it could be the balancer so any help would be appreciated

I guy wants to sell me his car. He writes that the car has new axles, new motor mounts, new tie rod links and new harmonic balancer. What kind of automotive condition would cause someone to replace all that, short of a wreck? It's for a 1996 Toyota Corolla DX Sedan.

yea absolutely, it probably wont last long like that, but some of those balancers really set good on their taper and on top of that some get torqued to about 4 billion ft/lbs, so yea its possible, however i wouldnt run like that at all, because its rotating the forces will slowly work the balancer off n if the balancer drives the cams then u could possibly bend every valve in ur motor n thats best case scenario, u could n will more than likely crack a head, youll need new valve guides for sure.. it could get expensive, theres gotta b some kinda bolt in there even if its a bolt out of the bolt bin jus for temporary

@@4dirt2racer0 thanks...bolt was stripped and bent crankshaft...fortunately I found a great corvette dealer that helped me with the cost. I had the balancer changed a yr ago to my detriment and screwed up a few things. Thanks for the response.

Revving an engine without the belt connected to the water pump can cause a fire that could burn down the entire shop, even months later!

WHAT???? I need to see and example and understand your theory on that one, Kliegl. That vid was done 5 years ago and the shop is still standing.

Sure. If you take a customer's car and race the engine without the water pump being hooked up and he finds out, he may take offense at the damage you caused (or damage he thought you caused) and burn you down instead of taking you to small claims. Depends on the area of town, I guess.

@@kliegl8613 well.. if you are going to take that extreme example, then yes, an engine with an externally driven water pump should not be ran at elevated RPM's for an extended period of time because you could cause an overheat situation. However, in cases where the pump is driven by internal chain or belt, there is little risk. In this case, there was no risk and our time to test was minutes, not hours. And any owner with arson on their mind after a disappointing experience with any business, surely has bigger issues than a failing vehicle. Thanks again.
