How a geothermal breakthrough could transform our energy grid

Ғылым және технология

Newberry Volcano - the largest volcano in the Pacific Northwest - is the site of an experiment that’s aiming for a breakthrough in geothermal energy.
The experiment is one small step in the high-risk, high-reward world of next generation
geothermal. The goal is to replace fossil fuels with this always-on, renewable energy. The challenge, however, is getting it to work.

It's not "renewable"; it's perpetual and virtually eternal. The gyrotron tube allows for drilling three to six miles far cheaper and easier than ever before.

Combine it with heat pumps to recycle waste heat and you can raise the efficiency even more.

Ya I cant figure out why people can't get into this. I always hear its to deep theres no volcanos nere. Like come on people we drill for oil down to 4 miles sometimes drilling is way more affordable then ever before. Them na it will cost to much whats the point. 🤦 why is it easier to drive a nail in a bord with your head then to convince these people its easy to start up and it can in fact benefit there life and potentially reduce there bills.

Just like driving 55mph results in your car emitting less pollutants, the other side of that coin is your increased mpg, which is saving you money. Maybe drivers could be coerced (fooled) if someone introduced this as the latest ‘Driving Hack’, lol

The suns sends in around 100Watt/m² in cold regions (Canada). Thats 100 000 000 000 Watt/km² (100GW). A Power Plant is nothing in comparison. Much more important is the (net plus) CO2 Emission and Impact on plant and wildlife.

Very interesting. With climate change throwing hydro into chaos (see Glen Canyon) and battery storage technologies still in a supply conundrum, enhanced geothermal could be a strong bet to add base load stability in at least parts of the US.

Every steam turbine run by fossil fuels could be run instead from steam from deep within the Earth! This means a geothermal well at every fossil fuels powered plant.

So you take heat and convert it into energy, where does the waste heat produced go? Into the atmosphere . What is causing the planet to overheat? Heat that is trapped. There are the laws of thermodynamics at play in any energy transformation process

When you hear someone say: the earth is big, we are small, so we use a little bit of geothermal energy, it does not matter. Do you think it is scientific? When you hear someone say: geothermal energy is clean, and it is nearly unlimited, therefore renewable, do you think it is scientific or responsible? And what are the logical fallacies in this statement?

I have wondered just how "renewable" geothermal is. We humans do it time and time again; we extract too much and throw off normal cycles. not even solar energy is "renewable" after all. its just a battery with 7.5 Billions years left on it. what do the studies say about us cooling the earth? "How long until the Earth’s core cools completely? Since bridgmanite is cooling at a rate faster than previously thought, 1.5 times higher, this gives “a new perspective on the evolution of the Earth’s dynamics,” Professor Murakami told ETH Zurich. This will have a knock-on effect for calculations of heat transfer of the stable mineral phases at the core-mantle boundary." from Why is Earth's core cooling faster according to scientists? - Greg Heilman we already heat up the atmosphere, now we want to cool the ground by releasing its heat??

Earth's core and mantle get heated up by radioactive materials and isotopes inside, but even those have an end. But I think that of geothermal ever gets exhausted, humanity will be long gone, since it might take billions of years since heat is released like that in even larger amounts all the time through vulcanism

According to this calculation on Wired by a physics professor, at the very low-end, the estimate is the Earth's heat will provide 17 billion years of 100% geothermal energy. This is longer than the sun will last. You can see the calculation here: www.wired.com/story/how-long-will-earths-geothermal-energy-last/

@@starmax1000 no doubt it will take a long time. but i have strong faith that profiteers and ignorance of consumption quantities will lead to another climate crisis, this time at our feet. 200 years we messed up the climate with industry. i don't want to be short sighted with geothermal either. i want to keep in mind my progenitor 10,000 years down the line. edit: i guess i'll have to start thinking about my progenitors 170,000,000 years in the future (supposing a 1% energy consumption would start having negative effects on the planet. )
