If it wasn’t for the damage moss can cause on a roof, I kind of like the look of it on a house, especially on a thatched roof. When the moss is a really bright green, it’s nice to look at and it makes the house look like it’s a part of nature. It’s too bad it has to be removed.

I can understand you...even if i prefer by far the poison ivy, the look of a house that has a facade covered in poison ivy is truly unique and awesome...but yes, the moss made a unique look too.

If you like moss, we recommend a double roof. The top roof is a potted plant bed that acts as little as a roof and provides the best conditions for moss. However, it is not only moss that grows, so it still needs to be managed.

What even is moss..... in all seriousness when you live in a place as dry as Utah the only moss you know of is tiny frail barely living brownish green fluff that sometimes is spotted at garden centers. When you take it home it dies rather quickly despite your best efforts to keep it watered.

I live in a dry climate too, but we used to have moss growing in between our flagstones before we got lazy and let it die. If planting it outside, you have to plant it somewhere where it won't be in direct sunlight most of the day, and you need to water it at least twice a day. We would water it once at dawn and once at dusk, but if you don't want to get up super early just to water your moss, then you could probably get away with watering it when you wake up.

I'm always curious to learn what other people in different countries have to deal with when it comes to daily living. Here in the south of the United States, we have to be careful of mold growing inside the walls that can turn into black mold, which is highly toxic.

To prevent moss & mold all you need to do is install a zinc strip at the peak. My roof still looks new at 30 years old with the metal strip installed at the peak.

It is to remove the conditions for growth of moss. However, it is not easy to remove the condition in the UK. The chemicals don't last long, the moisture is absorbing enough from the air, and the UV-rays isn't enough to inhibit the growth of the moss.Therefore, the best response, which is sustainable and inexpensive, is to use coatings and composites that are difficult for plants to grow as the material of the roof. Nevertheless, if the roof is not cleaned frequently, the moss will grow little by little using a small amount of dirt and dust accumulated on the roof as a bed. However, it is very easy to clean because of its slow speed and weak adhesion.

In the southern United States I have treated roofs with baking soda. Generally, the asphalt shingle roofs I have dealt with have much less green moss, but lots of blackish mildew and moss. Spread about 10 pounds (at a cost of about $10) of arm and hammer baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) across the roof. Sprinkle it on and let the next rain wash it off. The Baking soda is basic and will do a PH shock to the roof, killing the mildew. We eat baking soda, so it is not harmful to humans or the environment. Usually, after treatment it takes about 2 to 4 months for the rain, sun and weather to naturally wash the roof off revealing the original color of the roof, making the roof look almost new. One can also use bleach, acid washes a roof (instant results) but these chemicals can make a roof slippery, wet, and a slight breeze can blow them back at the applicator. (winds on a roof do funny things and sudden updrafts more so than on the ground). It is super quick and easy to treat a roof this way, just sprinkle it on. Frequently, I will miss some spots on the roof, so I will come back 3-4 months later and reapply on any areas where I still see moss or the color does not look right. Still, when you are in the area, and patient, treating a roof with an all natural product, that takes 10 minutes to sprinkle on is a great home maintenance tip.

It’s worth mentioning that when moss is mixed with powdered rock, the result is potting soil. But the process takes several years. It’s like composting. Somebody could manufacture a variety of potting soils by using granite, or whatever. Maybe soapstone would become soil faster.

Pressure washing rooves has got a bad rap from the idiots who thought that they could wash their rooves from the base of it, without an extension pole. They then proceed to push thousands of psi's of water up a roof and under the tiles, inso doing soaking the loft area. You can quite happily wash your roof from the apex on down at around 100 bar, especially if you use a flat surface cleaner like Sid does.

Great but would like to see some evidence that moss causes damp even in the long term. The roots are tiny and tiles are substantially thick. They are also overlapped so water between the tiles drips onto the next and then onto the membrane. I do agree that cleaning helps maintain the aesthetic.

Yes, but what happebs if there is moss between the interlocking channel of the tiles. It was impede/block the flow of water and it will track onto the felt or into the roof space.

@@ndewhurst1007 i never said that it does. Again, moss built up in the channel between the interlocking tiles impedes/blocks/ diverts the rainwater inside of the tile. So it ends up either on your felt/breathable membrane or inside of your attic/roof space.

What happens when the biocide drips off into the surrounding ground and/or when it rains and runs off into the drain. I'm guessing if it kills organic material on the roof, it's probably not the most ecologically friendly tool to be using?

Professional exterior cleaner here: as you can see, the idea is to keep it on the roof until it dries. Gutter bags and other catch systems are sometimes used in sensitive situations, but mostly, once it reacts with the moss and then dries, it's lost its most potent abilities. When the rain does come, it gets diluted to the point that it's no longer harmful to the environment in these small quantities. Once the initial reaction is complete, the leftover materials are various salts and other relatively harmless things. In fact, some of the same chemicals are used to keep drinking water safe! Now, don't go pouring house cleaning chemicals in your own water of course, but no need to worry that it's killing the fishes!

Indeed, i was thinking the same. With pressurized water you can take off all of the moss with 1/3 of the effort. The important thing is not to exaggerate with the pressure of the water, to not damage the tile (obviusly you dont have to put the water at 1000 bar XD )

Pressure washers can damage tiles particularly if there are unseen cracks or weaknesses in the interlock between the tiles (these are interlocking ones, likely a stonewold) Also you can force water up and under the tiles whilst washing if you aren’t careful, causing leaks and water damage inside. It happens a lot when people who don’t know what they are doing try to use a pressure washer and angle it up the roof (which should be an obviously stupid thing to do) or have it at a near 90*angle to the roof and the spread of the water forces it up under tiles. Enjoy the mostly useless to you information.

Clay roof generally last for 20+ years especially if the manufacturer adds glazing to them so that the pores become smaler than the traditional clay tiles.. But once it reach 30/40+ yrs of age it'll get fragile to the point that u just need to knock it with ur bare hand to break them (at least here in asia).. Idk about UK but in Germany there's company called Bernd Waldenberger that makes a high quality roof tile that I think suits European countries

Quality Slate properly installed can last 100+ years, but oddly enough the longest lasting roofing is thatch.

Do a double roof and grow moss. It’ll save a lot of money

Roof cleaning is not always a good idea - do some thorough research before doing it. This guy looks quite careful, but very often it causes more harm then good. It's very unusual for a roof to suffer damage from moss growth and there are roofs all over the UK that are decades, sometimes well over 100 years old, that have never been cleaned - intact, probably 99.9% of the roof area in the country has never ever been cleaned - think about that when a contractor is selling their services!

Yeah I think it really depends where you live tbh. Where I live we get moss but pigeons end up knocking it off to the ground anyways 😂 so our roof is always clean

Moss is highly CO2-absorbant and provides foraging for birds. The roots are incredibly shallow and really not that damaging, unlike how ivy can be.

So the family has moss on the roof and never had issues for 28 years

Sorry but its nonsense that moss ruins roofs. Sales talk. Been in the business for years including working on many roofs. Moss does get in the gutters and blocks them but doesn't crack tiles.
