How 1989 NES Tetris Got Adapted for Tetris Effect Connected (feat. Greentea)

An official re-release of NES Tetris was something I never thought would happen, but Tetris Effect Connected is making it as close to reality as possible. This sponsored video is a deeper dive into what it took to adapt a 31 year old game for a modern release.

I was initially disappointed that Greentea decided not to participate in CTWC this year, but now its clear that he wanted to spend as much time as possible perfecting Tetris Effect Connected, especially the Classic Tetris mode, and now I couldn't be more grateful for that. I'm beyond grateful that the Tetris Company allowed this to happen, so that I can have an opportunity to practice my core Classic Tetris skills during a time that I cannot obtain the original NES hardware due to Covid-19. Can't wait to pick up the game on release day!

Having collaborated with Greentea back in 2016, I'm sure Greentea is the perfect person to lead the multiplayer game design. He writes code, composes music, at one point built his own rhythm game, and wrote a Japanese blog detailing NES Tetris' game mechanics in extreme details. After seeing this video, I preordered without a doubt!

Really nice video, I loved the interview with greentea. However it also cemented for me the fact that they will never add ARS/TGM style to a modern tetris release since he said he had to fight hard to even get Classic ruleset in. The only reason they could convince them was probably that the viewership for CTWC is doing so well right now. While TGM is basically dead... so yeah RIP to that dream of mine.

I think from a legal perspective the might not be allowed too. To have a version that's near identical to the core gameplay of another game who's rights are owned by another company. At least with this classic battle mode, the core appeal is a multiplayer function that didn't exist in the original game making it legally different enough to get away with

You sound a lot like Hank Green. I honestly thought this was Hank Green speaking at the start

How old is green tea? I always thought he was about the same age as Joseph, maybe a little older as in early 20s. It's awesome that he's on the game design team already! Props to whoever hired him, probably the best person in the world to design that game type.

Asians always look much younger than they are. I would not be surprised if Greentea is actually in his 30s or something.

According to the most recent video, apparently he got hired as multi-player design lead directly out of college. Congrats to him!

9:08 are these helper settings saved when playing against strangers or for friend/local matches only?

I doubt it will be saved for online matches, but maybe they'll make a separate game mode for online matches that has some different settings

11:08 and what about PS? Was going to buy a PS5 just for an old good Tetris but haven't noticed any announcements about TE Connected being available there. The only rumor I saw was that TE Connected will be kind of a DLC for a plain TE which is available there at the moment.

Great informative video in terms of the mechanics. It's just a shame that this is being held back from PSVR and other non Microsoft platforms. I've read that in summer 2021 everyone platform will get it but I can't see anything official. I've been looking at purchasing a copy of the original Tetris Effect game for a while but will now be putting it off until I can find out the full information when and where this add on will be available.
