My friends and I watched this tape over and over again. The athleticism was off the charts. Everyone talks about Phi Slamma Jamma, but Louisville's starting five was just brilliant. That's why the Houston dunk show was so stunning.

This was one the most anticipated games of the 80's, two great teams. Played above the rim, and plenty of highlights. Phi Slamma Jamma!

The pace of this game was insane enough, just imagine this game played with today's rules 30 second shot clock and three point line

I was 11 during this tournament and college basketball was my life. Though this style of basketball wasn't maybe synonymous with the overall game back then, this game represented it at the peak of its powers. After Louisville goes up 57-49, it would be hard for me to explain what occurred on the court with this most wonderful of Houston Cougar runs. To say that it was exciting, would be a gigantic understatement. I still marvel at it some 41 years later. I've loved college basketball since seeing Bird/Magic in the Final 4 but the decade which was the 80's is still it's most fascinating period. I'm still a huge fan of the game today.

The 1983 Houston Cougars were the greatest college team never to win the NCAA championship! If there was a shot clock they beat NC State by 30 in the finals! Can you imagine having Hakeem and Clyde and NOT winning the championship??

Darrell "Dr. Dunkenstein" Griffith was not on this Louisville team. He led the 1980 team that won the title over UCLA. He was playing for the Utah Jazz at the time of this game. Thanks for uploading this game. Phi Slama Jama at its height. We all know what happened two nights later.

I've heard sportscasters refer to the 1985 title game between Villanova and Georgetown as the biggest upset ever. NC State over Houston is it for me because State had no business even being there, IMO. Houston had a 26-game winning streak at the time, and they lost because they couldn't hit free throws. How can you play basketball and not be able to shoot at least 75% from the foul line? It's been 41 years, and that game will bother me for the rest of my life.

If you count two free throws as a full shot attempt, there was either a shot attempt or a turnover every 12 seconds of this game.

Announcer had it right: Louisville should have started fouling at the 2:15 mark. They could have won this game. Denny Crum was out to lunch.

Basketball could be like this now if they created rules to deemphasize the 3-point shot. Now we get a huge game of long distance H-O-R-S-E mixed in with some basketball. And we protect the 3 point shooters from real defense in order to avoid injury. Those of us who grew up watching 80s college basketball aren't fooled by the product they are trying to push on us now.

I believe in that era, some conferences used 3 point lines and others did not. It became a nationwide thing maybe in the 1986-87 season. I think New Mexico's league was using it in this 1982-83 season.
