HOUSE TOUR | Hilarious Couple's 200-Year-Old DC Home
Tom Birch and Sidney Lawrence have been faithful residents of the historic Georgetown neighborhood for more than 30 years. Tom and Sidney--now married--met in Washington, D.C. in the mid 1980's and fell in love with this 200-year-old townhouse. They both hail from California but have an appreciation for classic architecture and eclectic decor. Sidney is an incredible artist who worked at The Hirshhorn Museum for 28 years and Tom is a former lobbyist for the protection of children and federal funding for the arts. Together, they are quite honestly the perfect and most hilarious pair. Enjoy!

I got completely lost in this. They have a wonderful home and are a gorgeous couple. Tom's position as a former lobbyist for the protection of children is admirable.

Gentlemen, not only do you have a treasure, you are both treasures. Regarding the telephone service, I remember when my Grandmother had a party line. Younger people may not know what that is, it's when two or more telephone subscribers share the same line.
@poorthing

Ok. I'm 70. From a rural Northern Indiana county. No town back then in the mid 1950s, everyone on our gravel road was on the same phone line. After coming home from grade school my sisters and I would entertain ourselves by listening in to the teenage girls who lived down the road talk '1950 era teen talk.' They wore Bobby Sox and saddle shoes and full skirts with lots of petticoats, pony tails and red lipstick. I couldn't wait to grown up and be like them. But how could I know that I'd be wearing mini skirts and bell bottoms with 'Twiggy' eye make up!

@@tracymcreationsunless you lived in rural or suburban areas in the 50s/ early 60s your family may not have had party lines. But in the big baby boomer surge, homes were being built in record numbers, not enough private phone lines to go around, wow-- that sure makes me feel weird. Ha...even a 'private line' sounds quaint today. Now We all carry our phones in our pockets, take pics, watch tv, movies, email, text and have access to knowledge just by swiping one finger across a 6" screen! Since you are only in late 60s I'm not surprised you hardly remember such a thing! Remember the Doris Day movie, Pillow Talk?

What a great couple and what a great house. It’s a beautiful home because it is NOT decorated. I think that all too often ‘decorated’ homes are for people who don’t know who they are. These guys know who they are and like who they are. They would be the dream neighbors next store.

They definitely don’t “decorate” as they declared when asked that question. And I agree. Decorators decorate. The rest of us acquire and accumulate and at some point the whole thing becomes sort of coherent. It’s not artifice or vanity which is what decorating is.

Thing is they do not recognize that their natural instincts make everything they do 'artful' in the best sense - they are artistic instinctively. We have an old family friend who is like that- everything he does in a house is naturally beautiful - he just can't help it ! He can 'floof' things up & turn any bunch of 'stuff' into an artistic display ! I have always admired & envied the talent ! The 'floof' word came out naturally - to me it means - rearrange with artistic style - hope it's an ok word ?
Apparently, this couple is much-beloved by artists. As the camera panned, I lost count of how many works of art contained them as subjects.
Tom and Sidney are Charming....Love the townhouse with all their clutter....Cute dog....
Living how they want to live ,with their decorative arts around them. I like the old fashion telephones.. Theses two have a certain finesse about them..and a American class. I cover my television up with a old tapestry,and just take it off when I watch it..which is not very often lol.

So heartwarming and exciting to see the home full with trinkets and art items! I like the bohemian touches and unique splashes of color which is great 🤗 Very cool uncles to spend time with 😗😍
This remind me my uncle’s apartment in Beijing. He is a art critic and art magazine editor. His apartment has thousand of things, from ax made in stone age to headboard made of Qing dynasty’s old window. I particularly love a pair of stone lions at his door. Of course there were all kinds of paintings, photographs in his apartment. Cuz my cousin is a traditional Chinese brush painting artist. I love the warmth in my uncle’s apartment. This house remind me a lot of similarities in feel though in different style. I like this charming warmth. It is a home not just a house.
Loved this! Will watch over and over again. These guys are great to watch.❤️❤️
A wonderful couple. So charming. My husband and I have a similarly "overstuffed" house decorated in OTT style (Over The Top), but in the suburbs! When a repair person comes in, they are mesmerized since they are so accustomed to the typical suburban Pottery Barn and IKEA decor.
