The Hand of the King is permitted to sit on the iron throne when the king is unable to. The hand becomes acting king in their stead. Remember Ned Stark sat on the iron throne in season 1 and held court while Robert Baratheon was out hunting.

So I’m not the only one who finds that part of their reaction annoying. It’s already been 8 episode, it’s fine if they find it disgusting but being shocked by it in each episode is frustrating. It’s not like incest isn’t the part of our own history in royal families.

Otto sits on the throne because he speaks for / acts as the King in the petitions while Viserys is uncapable to. He cannot do that if the King is present though, not at all.

Margerys mom was a Hightower, her dad a Tyrell. So papa Tyrell married a Hightower. So Margery is related to Hightowers but yeah she is a Tyrell. Hightowers are still around in GOT, they are Lords of Oldtown, which we see in season 6 when Sam and Gilly go to Oldtown to join the Maesters guild, which is located in Oldtown.

It depends on how they end up portraying him, he can either be a darker version of Daemon (for all his flaws, Daemon is actually very savvy and cool most of the time unlike Aemond who loses control often), or a wannabe Daemon (this is the impression he gives in the books but not the show so far) if they decide to go down that route instead.

Aemond's deeds currently, revolves around prior hatred established from the confrontation that lost him the eye and even Luke's death was more by accident. Aemond also currently is very loyal to his family. So most likely if he changes it will be war related changes in the upcoming conflict.

If you watch closely to Daemon & Aemond's reactions to each other scenes, there's a mutual respect there. Also Aemond's name is just Daemon's name with the D moved from the front to the back. They are mirrors of each other: second sons, rogue princes, black and green.

Paddy Considine essentially playing a number of different 'versions' of Viserys with the disease progression in one season, he really nailed the role.

Vaemond is a liar: the standard inheritance law in Westeros is male-preference primogeniture...which is still "primogeniture". The books explicitly say that a lord's daughter inherits ahead of his younger brother -- thus Laena was always ahead of Vaemond in line of succession. IN TURN, Laena's daughters inherit before her own uncle. By all rights, even IF Rhaenyra's sons are bastards, then BAELA is the heir to Driftmark, and she knows it. "Primogeniture" means inheritance goes until a lord's entire bloodline is extinguished, even through granddaughters. Rhaenys of course got pushed aside because the Great Council voted "uh...royal inheritance should be different!"

It is true Viserys, thought he was talking to Rhaeynera. He only confided the prophesy of the song of ice and fire to her early in the season as it is only passed down to the targaryn rulers. If you recall the prophesy told of a great evil threat that would descend from the north and threaten the realm. A Targaryn named Aegon would be the one who would unite the realm to fend of the great threat in the north...the prophesy of course would come true about 125 years later... (as best as i can recall)

Daemon seemed amused at aemond, like he got a new toy to play with. Daemon is not a good person but my god he is so charismatic

Just to confuse you even more, there's now 3 people called Aegon. There's Aegon the Conqueror, who had the dream about the White Walkers and passed down the tale through the line of Kings to Viserys (His great, great grandson.) Then there's Alicent and Viserys' eldest son. (Aegon the Elder,) and Rhaenyra's 4th son (who is also) Daemon's 1st (Aegon the Younger.) Don't be too hard on yourself for making mistakes about how everyone is related to one another. The Targaryen family tree is incredibly messy.

They already discussed aegon marrying helaena in the last episode remember the targaryens have married outside of their house through generations just for alliance but also still keep the tradition of marrying cousins or siblings within the family so they can keep their Valeryan blood pure and their dragons , also alicent didn’t kill dyana she felt bad and she knew that in those times women don’t get justice so the best thing she could do was fire her while compensating to make sure shes not pregnant by the prince other wise it’s death for her ugh she deserved better 😢💔 you can see the difference of motherhood with alicent and rhaenrya for instance rhaenrya had her boys later in life through love and trust which is why she’s so loving with them also her children in order is : Jace , Luke , Joffrey, aegon , visery’s and another one on the way. Alicent who was a child bride to visery’s that was forced to have her children through duty and young age didn’t know how to be a mother but that doesn’t mean she does not love them any less even though aegon keeps doing disgusting things and she has no choice but cover up for him even though his behavior is no excuse which is why alicent hugs on her daughter since she felt bad in that scene cause she had to marry her crazy ass brother which she has children with too , alicent’s children in order is : Aegon , helaena , Aemond and apparently alicent and visery’s actually have 4 children together which they never showed through out the show and his name is daeron who’s the 4th child , also helaena is a sweet heart and she’s the only one who doesn’t really wear green like the rest of her family does , yes alicent has been driven duty her whole life so of course she gets the misunderstanding with visery’s about the prophecy that’s only secretly shared with targaryens and will now push for her son aegon to be king! It makes no sense to poison the king. If he dies, Rhaenyra gets the throne. As long as he's alive, Otto as hand gets to rule in his name. They are giving him milk of the poppy to keep him sedated.

It is easy to remember the second son of Alicent’s name, it is Daemon with the D in back and it is pronounced the same. Viserys was continuing his conversation where Rhaenyra asked if he believed Aegon the Conqueror’s dream. This is obviously not a conversation he had with Alicent. He also didn’t mention naming Aegon as heir. Rhaenys had no choice one Viserys walked into the chamber. What was she going to do? Challenge the king’s authority? She had to side with Rhaenyra.

I am so mad, Rhaenyra herself left the capital and for all these years neither she nor Daemon even thought of visiting the sick aging Viserys. Did they realize that Viserys would be left alone with the Hightowers and they would rule? This is as obvious as the origin of the "strong" boys. And when it smelled fried and the inheritance of the child began to float away through their fingers, the relatives suddenly suddenly remembered the king and hurried to the capital where, oh, surprisingly, someone was engaged in politics all this time. Alicent is not Mother Teresa, nevertheless she took care of Viserys. Even on the last night of his life, she was by his side. The old man didn't have half of his face! He was just a walking corpse. It's amazing that he somehow managed to survive all these years on poppy milk. Without him, he would have given his soul to the seven much earlier from the pain shock..

All the other Aegons that came after was named after him, including the 2 in the show and Jon Snow in Game of Thrones... who is the ACTUAL "prince that was promised." Jon Snows real name is Aegon Targaryan as well. Also Viserys NEVER named anyone else his heir other than his daughter. He had one true love and considered her his only "real" child.

The tea that Alicent gave Dyana was Moon tea. It is a “Plan B” but the tea only works if it’s brewed right. If not, you can die from it. So yes, in a way, Alicent is trying to give her a “way out” from having a child.

Because Lord Coryls agreed to the arrangement. He knew his son was gay and that it was possible that he may not father legitimate children. That doesn’t matter to him though - he just cares about their name living on (as he discusses with his wife at some point during the season - “history doesn’t remember blood. it remembers names.”) Vaemond is just a butthurt second son who wanted to make a name for himself but made a poor/impulsive decision (for which he paid with his life). Acting the way he did, in the setting he was in, was, to put it plainly, stupid.

Take Daenerys, for example, who is only ~2% Targaryen. Alicent was serving as regent though, so they'd be co-equal, or arguably Alicent could dismiss Otto. Regents have dismissed Hands in the past.

@@s1lm4r1l6 The Queen Regent is someone who has temporary authority while an heir awaits his coming of age. As the line of succession is to pass directly from Viserys to Rhaynera, Alicent should hold no such powers. She's merely the second wife and mother to a boy who is not the declared heir.

The point of Targaryens marrying each other, is to keep their (dragon) blood as pure as possible. The dragons will only bond humans with Targaryen blood.

all these characters are so morally grey, especially Daemon, like you want to love or hate these people completely but each one of them has a good and bad quality too themselves and in this series especially so far, we get to see how the villains become villains, and unlike in game of thrones the reasons that we get shown on screen are somewhat very legitimate reasons for why someone turned bad or evil. for Aemond it was bullying, for Aegon it was neglect and abandonment and so many other things the parents could have done better on, it makes you sorta sympathize with them and for me makes me really wish they could have had that extra love or extra attention, bc they for sure would have turned out better, if it wasn't for their parents and their other adult figures they looked up to

Daemon and Viserys had a 3rd brother who died early named Aegon. Daemon probably named his two sons after his brothers.

The Targaryens marry brothers and sisters so much to keep bloodlines pure because the dragons are the source of their power and if they mix with other house those house could have kids that can ride dragons too so the Targaryens are trying to keep the mix of bloodlines down as much as possible so they don't lose "control" of the dragon power in the country.

Yeah, the cold reception was such an obvious shade. Compare that to when Robert Baratheon showed up to Winterfell and all the Starks, their assistants, and even lowly castle peasants were lined up to receive their king. And on this show the Sea Snake stayed inside and sent his daughter out to receive Viserys at Driftmark as shade for Viserys marrying Alicent instead of Laena.

I honestly think the prophecy was talking about Jon Snow especially since he’s obviously called aegon and says ‘u are the one’ and Alicent says prince aegon thinking it’s her son but could be a hint it’s actually Jon since technically he’s a prince and he’s named aegon

viserys is a well written and acted instance of a horrible father and king, who deceives himself that he is well meaning, but really isn't. he is well meaning only to his daughter, to others, including his children by alicent, alicent herself, and his subjects, he is opposite of well meaning . he is a horrible father, husband and king. foreseeable consequences of his actions prove that clearly. show did well to ensure vaemond went on saying what he said instead of backing down, even though he knew there wont be a good outcome for him. he for one is not taking injustice of entitled tyrants passively. and this is an instance where making his house black fits rather well. scene is full of various subtextual nuances and allusions. aemond started only after luke served him a pig. also prophecy can be misleading. that prophecy was probably made intentionally to destroy targs and dragons.

so the show is really showing aegon in a villinous light and whitewashing rhaenyra massively. he wasnt a rapist in the book and rhaenyra in books gave order for vaemonds execution to daemon,, who tracked vaemond down killed him and rhaenyra feed his corpse to syrax. mind you book vaemond did not even put forth any petition neither did he called her whore. he just complained about her bastard kids inheriting to his brother nd some relatives in private, then vaemonds kids and relatives came to court to complain about it to king viserys and he had all of their tongues removed.

I mean they massively whitewashed Alicent as well. They made her a “victim” of the patriarchy in the show when SHE IS NOT in the books. She is worst than show Otto in the books. Everybody gets altered in some way or another. That’s why it’s called an adaptation.

If you think about it.. incest isn’t wrong at all. LET ME EXPLAIN If your argument is that it’s wrong because inbreeding leads to birth defects; That would suggest that it would be wrong for anyone to have a child if there is a high likelihood of birth defects. Would you be willing to make that claim to someone who has such birth defects. I’ve met many people (including children) who have Down’s syndrome and other disabilities classified as birth defects. And the vast majority of them are glad their parents had them. And if you still disagree, what about an incestuos couple where one partner is sterile? If your argument is that it’s wrong because of the power dynamic between the couple; Then a non-incestuous couple should be equally wrong if they have a similar power dynamic. In that case you don’t actually have a problem with the incest. You have a problem with the power dynamic! So an incestuos couple with no power dynamic should be fine! Do anyone have a different argument against incest that isn’t “it makes me feel icky”? Because I’m genuinely curious. From the conclusions I’ve come to, it seems like most people who are against incest are ignorant to their own reasons why. Which doesn’t necessarily make them bad people. But there is some interesting parallels to homophobia if you think about it.. Tough I don’t want to make that comparison in a vacuum.
