House Darklyn Key Moments Explained (House of the Dragon 204)

House Darklyn from Duskendale gets some spotlight in season 2 episode 4 of House of the Dragon - The Red Dragon and the Gold. I wanted to take the time and give them some additional playing time as they're apart of some big moments in the history of Westeros.
I talk about how many members they've contributed to the Kingsguard and the Defiance of Duskendale (involving the Mad King Aerys Targaryen).

You are right. The white shields on the banner of House Darklyn was not done correctly in the episode where Lord Darklyn was executed. The shield is accurate as of the time House Darklyn became extinct. During Dance there should have been three white shields. Jaime Lannister was 15 when he became a knight, 16 when he joined the Kingsguard

Yep exactly. There are two Darklyn KG knights that have no info to share so they could be before or after, but there’s at least one that is after the Dance that we know of.

The Defiance of Duskendale happened because Duskendale was a major port before Kingslanding grew to be so big and important. They had been losing money forever. Dorne had been allowed to come into the seven kingdoms with a charter for the city of Sunspear, which I think helped them with the taxes. Duskendale wanted the same, Tywin refused so they appealed to the King, and Aerys decided that he could show up Tywin by going there and solving this himself. I don't really want to dwell on Lady Darklyn's death, she was a foreigner and it was awful. There was a ten year old squire who pulled Aerys beard and he died on the rack. Aerys not only had the Darklyns killed but relatives of them that lived nearby, the Hollards were in laws. Barriston the Bold by himself entered the city in disguise. Then at night scaled the castle wall, then Scaled the inner courtyard wall. Killed some soldiers , found and freed Aerys, led him out , stole some horses, sheilded him as he fled though wounded by an arrow. The whole thing was amazing. Or the Darklyns had truely lousy security. When offered a boon he asked that Dontes Hollard be spared as he was a toddler. Which should have been in the show. Dontes lamenting to Sansa about Barriston gone, how he would have spoken up about him to Joffrey or something like that. At least then book readers who watch the show would comment about the story and show watchers would hear about it. But I think that in a Robert's Rebellion series there will be a lot of scenes talking about Duskendale with how it changed Aerys. Or maybe a Barriston flashback with younger actors playing him and Aerys. Fingers crossed. The Defiance of Duskendale is important as to why Aerys went mad. He stooped allowing any but his Kingsguard near him with a blade so his hair and fingernails grew long and tangled. Tywin wouldn't bargain for his release, he decided to attack at dawn even if they threatened to kill Aerys. Thus confincing Aerys that there were plotters out to see him dead or deposed to be replaced with Rhaegar. I wonder if Barriston regretted saving Aerys? I know Barriston regretted losing the tourney at Harrenhall, because he was going to crown Ashara Dayne Queen of love and beauty and then Lyanna wouldn't have been. Which was absolutely true though I don't think that Tywin was in on this at Duskendale.

@@movieloverfan18 I think that Tywin viewed this situation much like Aemond viewed Aegon tied up with Rhaenys in ep 4. If they go down so be it. There’s a better option waiting on deck. I also hope they find a way to get Duskendale into a RR spin off. It’s five years before RR so I suppose they can find a way to do it. It’s a very impactful event. There’s a Barristan chapter in Dance that shows him contemplating what could’ve been if he didn’t save Aerys. Hard to see him being regretful about doing his duty but when you consider what Aerys goes on to do I think he does kind of regret it. Really hoping to get the Harrenhal tourney. So many characters in one place.

@@MondayMorningMaester Did Barriston regret it in Dance, I don't remember, will take you word for it. As for Tywin, at first he probably didn't want to give in and at the end he probably did think that it was just enough of the siege, and if Aerys was killed it wouldn't be too bad. Maybe it was just all of the insults that Aerys had heaped on him, he probably didn't care as much that Aerys was being held or maybe he even thought Aerys would learn a lesson from it. Still, if Tywin really wanted Aerys to be killed then I think he wouldn't have waited, he would have just brought his army and attacked. Said something like how they threatened to kill the king and he thought he needed to attack immediately to save him, Whatever, I Don't see Tywin literally waiting months at great expense hoping they would get tired and kill Aerys. I think it more likely he would get together a small band and disguise them as the defendeds and say to them to slip in and kill Aerys and make it look like the Darklyn's did it. While the rest of the army attacking distracted everyone. And he gave permission to Barriston to try a rescue, though no one thought that was going to work. GoT gave us flashback sequences. A young Eddard at the Tower of Joy and a young Cersei going to see Maggie the Frog. If there is a Robert's Rebellion series, I would love to see the Tourney at Harrenhall. It was the biggest of tournaments ever held, huge prizes and everyone came. But after you hear people talking about Aerys and how he went mad over time, I would really like people reminiscing. Such as Tywin remembering when they were fast childhood friends, meeting when Tywin was sent to be cup bearer to Jaehaerys II after the outburst about Genna's betrothal incident. Tywin knighted Aerys during the War of the Nine-penny kings. And maybe you will get Barriston remembering Duskendale. You really have me wanting to see this now.
