I love seeing them in my apt. It means that basically any other insect smaller than they are is on borrowed time. Their looks and how they move does seem to engender a very primal feeling of dislike though, have to admit.

For some reason, house centipedes freak me out more than spiders or scorpions. I thought watching this would help me get over it, but no. That being said, they are very cool

Their legs freak me out and the speed in which they can move is terrifying. I can at least count the legs of spiders and they are relatively slow, I would even consider them cute.

The most venomous centipede is from the genus Scolopendra, which is a genus for giants centipedes But most of them is not as venomous as spiders or scorps, the pain will go away completely after few hours and won't hurt you in a long run (unless you have allergies or side health problems, it needs hospitalisation)

Every spring, I'm terrorized by these things as they invade my basement. You could tell me they're as harmless as a housefly, and it just doesnt matter. I see one and I'm filled with terror and revulsion. I've tripped into my nightstand, fell out of the shower, and rolled off the couch after noticing these crawling near me. Instant fight-or-flight response. They torment my soul.

Exact same story with me but replace basement with bathroom and house centipede with crane fly. Damn things always end up flying right in front of my face when I least expect. Things have given me a genuine phobia of them even though they're completely stupid and harmless. I hate them.

We use Ortho home defense spray around the basement. Keeps them away, you have to keep applying it because if you let a mating pair in your basement then they will have 50+ kids

I very much enjoy the different tactics you use to pick up each animal. Carefully coaxing the tarantula, poking the centipede, and for the tailless whip scorpion? Grabbing it by the face, which it seemed far too chill about xD what a great bug

I get that these bugs look scary but these are relatives to the house centipede that commonly lives in our houses in America. These guys are nothing to fear, think of them as a naked centipede, they have no armor, you'll accidentally cripple or kill them just by brushing them off of you because they don't have armor like their centipede cousins that are armored. I handle these guys with care a lot and never been bitten by them. Its their cousins you gotta be scared of because those are the ones that really hurt when they bite you. 😂

This breed of centipede can also live up to 15 years as well, you could quite literally make a pet out of these and you can find them in your home. Either in the basement or walls. They're very shy though, its not often you'll see this breed of them out in the open.

Centipedes make me shudder but you managed to make them seem cute. I appreciate how gentle you are in handling them.

Centipedes are probably one of the most creepy insect to me. The combo of many many long leg pairs, fast movement, and skittish nature always kinda bothered me. I always leave them be though. It's cool how you handle them with ease, and met some other cool creatures along the way.

I grew up with two plushie centipedes and they were among my most cherished toys. Colorful, cute, soft. Still have them. Might be why I kind of like species that have long bodies with several segments and many legs, like pill bugs, centipedes, millipedes, and velvet worms (although the latter looks like an absolute eldritch abomination when seen from bellow, especially their mouth).

Yes great to have another of your in-depth videos, fabulous photography and it is instructive to observe how quickly you identify and differentiate species. Evolution is the greatest thing ever imo and I just wish that everyone shared your careful and respectful interaction with our fellow creatures.

Fascinating. With their long, slender legs, house centipedes seem less threatening and more elegant in appearance than 'regular' centipedes. The katydids and blue-tailed lizards are such cute creatures, too!

The complex structure of the centipedes body in action is just mesmerising to watch.

I usually avoid videos showing bugs, but this one in particular made all the critters look endearing and even cute. Excellent work.

I just encountered a house centipede for the first time the other day! One of my cats was going bonkers over it at 1:30AM. I live in NH and I guess they aren't super common around here. Remarkably complex and beautiful creature, extremely different than most centipedes I've seen.

@@MelodicTurtleMetal Aww, that's very sad. Thankfully I don't think my cat was trying to eat it (she doesn't have teeth anyway, seems like it would be difficult for her). I'm sure I wouldn't be a big fan if there were a ton of them around, but regardless of that, their design is so intricate, fragile, and beautiful. If you want a repulsive insect, look to ticks. I'll murder any one of those fuckers I see. They're just these worthless little indestructible pieces of shit. The only good thing ticks do is get eaten by opossums, which are wicked cute.

Yeah, even dead ones make me freeze & I still feel nauseous looking at it even after I've convinced my conscious brain that it's dead. It's the fuckin legs. The more legs and the longer & splayed out the legs of a bug, the worse it is. Which is why I have no issue with millipedes and jumping spiders...because despite having many legs, they're short & kept tucked under their body.

I’m never going to hangout with this dude if I have the chance, knowing he can just pick up random creepy looking creatures and put them on me 😂

just discovered your channel. easily earned a sub. one thing i found really cool was you have the general topic of the video, but then also educate us and inform us of all the other critters / animals you find on the journey. which makes me (the viewer) feel as if i got some bonus information. very cool informative video and excited to see what else you got to offer! one love

Your field knowledge of the tropics is incredible. When I recently visited Costa Rica I was lost when it came to almost anything that wasn't an ant; my main focus group. And even then, there were a few ant species I encountered that I was unable to identify even to genus level! Have you obtained this knowledge just by spending a lot of time in the tropics, or do you research heavily before going? I have pretty good field knowledge in Arizona and much of the US because of the amount of time I have spent in the field here, but when it comes to other environments, especially ones with extremely high biodiversity like the neotropics, I can be completely lost when it comes to recognizing animals and behaviors in the field. By the way, the videography and editing of this video is great. Showcasing various glamor shots of the critter while you talk about it is highly engaging and very satisfying to watch. I'll have to take some inspiration from that! By the way, if you ever find yourself in Arizona, I'd love to collab!

I hope you get to see this comment, this is one of my favorite moments in my life. I was visiting family in Hawaii and 5y/o neice come out of her room to say "Mom come look! There's a fairy in my room!" We all gave a collective awwe how cute. She insisted "No there's a fairy, we were playing!" So her mom goes to investigate and seconds later screaming!! A huge house centipede in her room just chillin. I see them often here in Oregon, but never that large, close in size to what you're showing. And now I will forever think of them as fairies! 😅 Love your vids!

Thank you for your cool documentary, awesome shots and information, your editing is great! There's a bit of cinematography here, like that small cut to lightning at nigh, so beautiful. I've never seen a centipede like this before but I wish I did, they look really cool (though I'm sure unpleasant at home!). I also loved that shot of the bat flying, it's a very beautiful bat, you can see how huge its ears are.

So many fascinating creatures, one after another! In particular I loved the soil centipede, so different in color and size (huge!!) than the little thread-like ones I find

​@@hobogmillipedes have more legs and look encased in armor. Centipedes have less but more prominent legs and are generally much faster. Centipedes only have 1 leg pair per body segment, millipedes have 2 pairs. House centipedes and garden centipedes look quite different as well, one being propped up higher(house) while the other species generally lay flat to the ground. Most centipede can bite, while fairly mild in most species, giant desert centipedes have been known to have an incredibly painful bites. Millipedes are entirely harmless and can't bite or sting, however they can secrete a toxic to deter predators that can cause allergic reactions.

I love this channel. It's always been important to me to become braver when it comes to handling insects because I'd rather do my best to help them rather than hurt them, even when I'd rather not have them in my home. They're also just really cool in general. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It's cool to see someone approaching bugs and reptiles with respect and genuine interest because I'd guess most of us didn't have that kind of thing modeled for us growing up. It's a nice change!

While not quite as large, we have something very similar and slightly different coloured in Canada. Only in certain areas though, like parts of the Greater Toronto Area. They replaced my fear of spiders a few years back.

This is the only insect that bit me when i tried to hold it. I took it as a declaration of war and i smash all of them now. They always creeped me out but i was like "lets give it a chance, none of the spiders ive held bit me and are usually pretty chill" but no i put my hand out it walked up and bit me. Fker

House centipedes look more like an eldrich abomination than something that just lives on our planet. Still let them live though since they're free pest control. I'm pretty sure tailless whip scorpions are kept as pets because of how chill they are.

I actually saw one of these making its way across the floor in my house in San Diego. I saw a lot of movement going on and was trying to make out what it was exactly. By the time I realized it was a centipede my cat swooped in and devoured it!

House csntipedes might be fragile But so is my mental health

I want to love them, but had a traumatic experience at the impressionable age of 4 where one darted out an onto the back of my hand (my first time ever encountering one) while I was building with lego, I froze out of fascination then picked it up by the 2 huge back antennas which it clearly didn't like, it freaked out, dropped it on my forearm and it bit. Felt like honeybee sting, but 5 minutes later, my arm ballooned. Gotta remember though, when you're 4, something you consider big is really minuscule when you grow up... I've tried overcoming my silly phobia but to no avail. I'm 32 and if I see one dart under my bed, I won't sleep until I find it and satisfyingly end it with a can of Raid, watching if slowly wither and fall apart until it nice and dead. Why Raid though, and not a broom, well, fyi, house centipedes have a mild physic ability where once you spot one but realize you've got nothing around you to squish it, as soon as you leave to go get a shoe or broom, it's nowhere to be seen when you get back. Their gross little speedy spawns of hell, and be a better world without their existence. fr
