figured it out - in convert VDB select @name equals density in the group!!

Can you do this masking inside the VOP itself?

Yes, you can connect the mask volume to the second input of a volume vop and then use an import node to use it inside the vop. If you are interested, I have full series for building vdb using noise , on my website.
