So as far as I can tell, Geoff's "dumpster fire rating system" works along 3 axes: total bin volume, salaciousness of the items being burned, and intensity of the flames. I couldn't tell you what any of those axes correspond to though. Probably shouldn't think about it too hard.

That's a huge focus of Brandon Sanderson the author Geoff mentioned. Sanderson has very strict magic systems with well defined abilities. And how the characters work around these rules is a big reason why his stories are so interesting.

  • @jardex2275

    @jardex2275

Same thing applies to superpowers. Early Action Comics would conveniently give Superman whatever power he needed to solve the issue's problem. It's only after other heroes were introduced that they gave him a defined set of abilities to work around. For Isekai specifically, the protagonist's power can make or break a show. If they can take an uncommon power and make it useful, it can be a great series. On the other hand, giving them the power to curb stomp all their foes from the start makes for something bland.

Geoff is referencing "Sanderson's Laws of Magic", a set of writing principles proposed by the author Brandon Sanderson: 1. Expand on the rules you already have before adding something new.

@@myself2noone That's a matter of taste. There are soft magic systems that are quite amazing, though more often I would say stories that work with a soft magic system do so because they don't center around the system and maintain an air of secrecy while still implying heavily that there are strong limitations. So Sanderson's law still kinda apply (you can't use magic too much in your story because it's not well defined or understood by the reader, limitations are a necessity and you don't have lots of new magic system because you just don't have that much magic anyway). You don't have to like Sanderson's books to appreciate that his laws are an interesting guide for a fantasy writer.

What I find so funny about the shitty worldbuilding of Strongest Sage is that there was already an explanation for why the common view of crests is so mistaken in the future, the MC himself. Given that the MC was the strongest being on the planet despite having the crest least suited for combat, it is understandable that many people would think that the crest he had was actually the strongest due to some hidden potential it had that only the MC managed to unlock. Many people with the same crest as the MC would be inspired by him, causing them to try to reach the level he did. This would artificially inflate the average strength of the people with the crest in comparison to the others, making it seem more powerful. Tactics that used the strengths of that crest would be expanded upon, leaving the others underdeveloped. This creates an feedback loop, where even after the records of the MC have been lost to time everyone is now so used to this new status quo that this misconception grows larger and larger. Granted, this explanation still doesn't really make much sense and the magic system still needs to have some balancing issues fixed, but it's still better than what the author wrote. If you want to keep the demons in, just have them exploit this in an effort to weaken the humans.

The basic idea of "Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest" feels so bland and stupid. So there are four magic crests someone can be born with that determines their magical aptitude. The main character is a powerful sage, however he has the weakest of the four crests. So he just reincarnates as someone with the strongest crest right at the story's start and...that's it. It's the namesake of the story and yet almost all of it's depth(which is basically none) is fully explored in a single episode. Oh but apparently people in his new time period now view that particular crest as the new weakest crest. But they're wrong. That's it. It is still in fact the objective strongest crest, and the people of this time period aren't wrong for categorizing people's worth based on their crest, they're just wrong about which one is in fact the objective best. The main character is constantly "surprising" people with how strong he is, even though we as the audience already know that he is a legendary reincarnated mage from thousands of years ago who now possesses the objective best magic crest. This makes his constant shows of power to other characters completely meaningless and hollow to the audience, because we know that in reality he doesn't really have anything to prove and nothing to strive for.

I could see the concept working, if the first episode actually explained what the crests did before the reincarnation, and there were legit strengths and drawbacks to each one and the main character seriously had to contend with the drawbacks (and not just the main character saying 'oh there's this drawback that i can't do but now watch me cleverly get around that drawback in a very tell-don't-show way' like happens in the show)

The first problem disappears into irrelevance because he's just so much insanely better than everyone else at everything, that he's still better than everyone at the thing he's bad at. The second problem comes up once, I can't remember how he sidesteps it, and then the show promptly forgets it was ever a problem.

I read the web novel of this (at least a good portion of it) a while back and while it was still sorta dumb it definitely felt like a more fleshed out idea than what was said in the video, I haven't watched the anime so I'm guessing it was pretty bad at properly conveying all that stuff. From what I remember the title calls his new crest the "strongest crest" but it's more like it's the most suitable crest for the MC and his objectives, the one he *feels* is the strongest. His previous crest was specifically the weakest for combat which was his true calling, so he really wanted to change, but pretty much all the other ones would have been fine. Each crest has its own suitability but in truth none are truly superior, he simply doesn't care much about the drawback of this one while the increased firepower is exactly what he wants, I would think because of his combat style. Iirc he even wants to train someone with his previous crest to do crafting for him because of how powerful that crest is at it, fulfilling an important role in magic combat that he now can't really do. He also specifically has the goal of wanting to fight monsters in space which he has apparently seen glimpses of but were way too powerful, so there is an end game of sorts but he needs to grow back at least to his previous strength before taking it on. The demon thing was also not as dumb, I remember it feeling like a mysterious thing that he himself with all his knowledge felt was ridiculous and never should have happened. Demons almost taking over the world and erasing the knowledge of proper magic while replacing it with inefficient and limited chanted casting so people would focus on the wrong thing, obfuscating the nature of crests and making the strongest for combat especially ineffective. The only reason humanity was still around was because the properly strong demons were still sealed from when the world eradicated them during the MC's previous life, so the demons just didn't have the forces to completely take over, settling for keeping the humans weak while waiting for the seals to break. I don't remember how early on it was but the MC fairly quickly notices signs that there was some kind of apocalyptic war while he was gone that allowed this to happen, in the style of a modern world full out nuclear war. There were other things weird with it too, potential interference from the whole space monsters thing. What put me off and eventually made me drop I think was the harem-ish stuff (though iirc there really wasn't much interest from the MC in any of it in the WN) and in general the characters just weren't very good, along with the whole feel of the demons, it felt like a bad copy of kenja no mago/wise man's grandchild which in itself already wasn't the best. The idea and world itself actually pulled me in and I was disappointed that it wasn't better written, I generally do like power fantasy stuff and underestimated characters as long as it's well written.

"Weakest Crest" actually has a spin-off about what would have happened if he didn't reincarnate and while I would hesitate to call it good is actually much better than the original, the protagonist is still the strongest who can't be hurt by anything, but since it doesn't try to justify it by saying "everybody got weaker" is much more self aware about its premise, and instead of the protagonist being the only man in a team full of girls, which had been the norm for a while now, the team has the "bro" character, who is the (distant) second strongest person in the world and has good rapport with the others, which makes the team feel like an actual party instead of the protagonist's harem in waiting.

I’m a huge anime fan, a hobby my dad encouraged in my teenage years in the late 80s and early 90s. Lost my dad just over a year ago now. He left me a 69 mustang that we started restoring together around that same time, but life got in the way. It sat untouched for almost 20 years. After we lost him and with funds dropped in our laps from other family passing (lost 5 close relatives in the last 4 years, including a cousin my age to medical malpractice) I got really into finishing it. The Mustang I bring up because I’ve decided to combine my dads and I love of cars and “anime”, as dad even at 70 was a loyal crunchyroll subscriber. Also a speedracer fan which I’ve had an idea floating around I had planned on doing anyways if I ever got it. Making it into a Mach “1.5” tribute car. It’s now painted white and once the Covid shit passes I’ll be able to get the red interior finished like I planned. It was completely taken apart for repair and repaint. Not trying to bun you out as I’m in a much better place now. Thought this might be something you’d appreciate. Thanks for all the great content over the years.

For World's end harem, It should be noted that while he's holding out for said waifu, he's also one of the few who can help try and find a cure for said disease. He dedicates more time to that than being horny. Though the manga does explore a side where one of the male characters does what you'd expect. The catch is that the women he sleeps with are routinely rotated out once they get pregnant. The initial fantasy of being the "last man on earth" runs its course and he gets starved for romantic connections. Not to mention how he's the father to so many children but will probably never even meet them. Despite the initial premise and the expectations one would expect from it, I was surprised with what more it chose to do with its story than what it needed too.

It is just a dumb concept. The world is so advanced in medical technology that they've cured most diseases. So, do you really think that the solution they'd pick would be for him to sleep with various women? Of course not. That's incredibly inefficient. Heck, they probably wouldn't let him have sex with anyone, because that would be a waste of sperm that could be used on thousands of women, rather than just one. At best, he'd get a helping hand to help fill that beaker.

You know what annoys me even more about the Wiseman's Pupil? There was a neat story section of a character coming to realise that the game npcs had become real people, dealing with real pain and panic during a fight and then ended up teaching her and her entire town how to produce medicine and other things so they could become more self sustaining. The manga focused on this side story for a bit, which was surprisingly neat in the midst of the trashiness. Meanwhile the anime focused on it as much as my summary just now. So not only is it bad, it's somehow significantly worse than the original, which is trash to begin with. Also the running joke about "doing her business" is really giving me Mirai Nikki flashbacks. Man that garbage show was obsessed with that too.

I read She Proclaimed Herself the Pupil of the Wiseman on light novel (because apparently, Book Walker doesn't bother putting anything on its shelves if it isn't going to be an anime in 2 years), and it's... OK. It notably skips nearly all the worldbuilding you were talking about in the early parts of the first novel and hasn't even named all the wisemen yet in the first couple volumes which have been translated. Also, the novel lacks shitty cell-shading for monsters or J-Pop songs. (The story starts with a short chapter about using the character customizer and then cuts to Mira mopping up some goblins in a paragraph with a summon before spending most of the chapter having Mira talking to the "strangely advanced NPCs" before concluding it was all real and not a "stealth update", which cuts out that 4 minutes of no speech that is apparently in the anime. That said, the illustration has Mira taking off her robes to do the customary "genderbender check" in front of the very flustered knights, which may be to or against your tastes...) I wouldn't put it on the list of things I'd be recommending people unless they were into genderbender VRMMO things, and it has that problem most of these have with the actually interesting part of a powerful protagonist (I.E. the part where they scramble up the power curve from nothing like So I'm A Spider) having already been done off-camera to leave only the boring "beats every fight with a sneeze" power levels, but it's also mostly about the main character being forced to put on frilly dresses against his will, so as long as it doesn't try to be an action story, it's fine. Also, the horny mage girl is bad in the novels, but not THAT bad and apparently, they changed the lines but kept the "she gets creepy" parts... and went from "wants to hug" to "humps her staff". Oh, and the creepy mage girl only appears in volume 2 and Mira has a different party in volume 3, looking at the preview, so at least she'll only be creepy for part of the story... yay?

Instead of being a gender-flipped version of himself, Mira is a young female sage who is inspired by Danblf's legendary reputation that sets out to find him in order to become his pupil. Though initially reluctant, her relentless optimism wears him down and and they form a 'father-daughter'-style relationship. He ends ends up rediscovering his compassion and self-confidence while she discovers her power. They set out on a long, life-affirming quest to set the rescue the other Sages and set the world right.

Brandon Sanderson is an amazing author. I haven't read a book of his that I didn't enjoy. His ability to come up with unique magic systems that are internally logical and functional, while also being entertaining to see in use by the characters, is only matched by the quality of the characters and plots in those books. Mistborn is an excellent starting point for his works, although if you're looking for just a single novel experience instead of the first book of a series, try either Elantris or (my personal pick) Warbreaker, which is available for FREE on his website as an ebook. Strongest Sage reminds me of a manhwa I tried reading only even dumber somehow. It's called "Star Martial God's Art" (at least the translation I found was) and the premise on the surface could have worked. The basic idea was that there are three different "God Arts": Dragon, Phoenix, and Star. Dragon Arts are the most common and focus on empowering the user (mostly their physical abilities), Phoenix is more magic based and grants greater range and versatility but less close-range advantage, and Star is the rarest and most versatile. The problem is Star is so rare that all masters of the art are long dead and all of the teachings have been lost to time. As a result, with no one to properly teach the users and no scrolls to learn from, the Star arts are rendered practically useless and the users themselves are looked down on. That's not an awful idea in and of itself, having to relearn lost arts and their uses could actually make for a really cool leveling system so to speak. The problem is, the MC (who has the star art obviously) learns too quickly. He wakes up one morning and, I shit you not, the gods themselves have granted him a scroll with the star arts techniques. Within a week he goes from being the weakest guy around to being so absurdly strong that he outclasses every supposed prodigy he comes across as well as people with literal years more practice and experience using their abilities than him. Hell at one point he joins a tournament to win the hand of the most "beautiful woman in the land" just so he can say he doesn't want to marry her in front of all of the important people gathered there (the scene has literally no baring on the plot whatsoever and just happens because she was kind of a bitch). It's so ludicrous in how it handles itself and how quickly he grows that it's can't even be funny after a bit. It's just silly. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, can pose even the most remote threat to the guy.

Why did nobody seem to care about them? Did they live? Did they die? Are they ever brought up again? Any single one of those questions would probably make a better story than whatever the rest of the anime is about. Honestly I was slightly excited for Orient when I heard it was from the Magi author but dam the anime makes a show about fighting giant demons boring. If it had started off with a bang with amazingly animated fight scenes than it would have been so much better. The amazing thing about Magi was that it choose such an interesting premise in a relatively unexplored mythology for anime. So we got Djinns and flying carpets as well as characters names us from the west should recognise like Sinbad and Aladdin. We also had an amazing magic system in Magi that felt cool and impactful. Orient though falls on the side of generic for a Japanese manga. Based in Japan with Demons that sort of feels like it's been done multiple times. The only way Orient (anime) was going to be a successful series was if it was full of bad ass demons and fight scenes as world building was not going to pull the weight of it forward. Magi could rely heavily on world building as it was in a truly interesting world and I wish we got another season for it. It goes to show how authors/magnaka's can go from amazing series to a generic series. I don't know if it's the pressure to release something and so they fall onto a generic theme that sort of sells well or if they just burn themselves out and can't think of a good premise but so many Mangaka's sort of end up as one hit wonders.

That's interesting because all of the problems I had with the anime, besides the animation, stem from the manga as well. I was interested in the politics and the lore of the demons, but there was stuff that just broke my immersion, like why are there motorcycles? And now suddenly the Bushi have flying weapons that also make them fly. It's also kind of annoying how much the MR redhead gets away with winning and I do wish there was a limit to how much he could fight. The deuteragonist was more interesting in my opinion, but there were A lot of flashbacks to stuff we already knew. Idk if the manga gets better, but those are just my thoughts.

@@notationmusical I feel like that's a problem with a lot of heroes versus demon manga/anime where they start introducing more and more wacky stuff that breaks you out of the world. I feel like Orient could have gone two ways where one is more focused on the demon politics and turned into less of a battle manga or one that goes balls to walls with action and cool characters with amazing abilities whereas it feels like it's trying to do both and not doing either one justice. I haven't read the Manga so I don't know if it improves and my points are only based on watching the anime.

So, I only started a few chapters of Orient's manga and I stopped after a specific chapter that I will talk later, but... Worldbuidling isn't the worst part of this story, in my opinion. The difference between Magi and Orient is more of the basic lore that Shinobu used. In Magi, you have a *ton* of sources and it's relatively easy to find more about Arabic mythology ! Thus she made a lot of research, while Orient felt like an attempt to mix some Japanese myth with Chinese influences (those flying weapons you mentioned later ? Yep, inspired by the most recent Chinese stories !) and post-apocalyptic vibes (that's the only reason why they could have bikes). She really tried to do something, and she is kind of good in worldbuilding ! Also, the fights in the manga looks way cooler, but it's pretty common within adaptation. The place where I find she falls short... are the characters. She did not try to change and falls into kind of the same trope she used in Magi, especially the protagonists. While those tropes were fine when she wrote Magi, it wasn't anymore when writing Orient. Typically, the only feminine protagonist. You see Morgiana ? Basically the same but even... weaker ? In some way ? She tried to make a new "strong female character" but somehow failed. They were not perfect either in Magi, but there was something. I don't know if it changes later in the manga, but she basically has to re-learn everything with the 2 boys she's with. The worst part are for me how she writes relationships with those characters. I noticed later on that she did the same thing in Magi, and a friend of mine who read the very first manga she created, it was just as bad since the very beginning. The reason I dropped the manga is because of one specific chapter, wich I don't know made it to the anime... but it's a chapter where we basically learn about the protagonists' s**uality. It may just be me, but it was really uncomfortable to read that kind of things about minors. And after re-reading Magi (because I decided to make a DnD campaign based of it!), I realized it was always there. Hopefuly she stopped doing that later in the manga, but I'll be honest, I'm not really interested in reading it again. I do realize that I've become a bit more picky with the anime/manga I watch/read, but it always hit hard when you see one of your favorite author "failing" their next work.

@@vnolwen_art It is really disappointing when that happens and I wonder if being in a rush to release something kills the joy they had in their previous works. I do wonder as well if Shinobu was just thinking of everything she wanted to put into her work while doing her research and that's how we got Orient but the characters feel flat most of the time.

@@rosietales This is a very good question, especially when you know how hard being a mangaka can be. I want to check on the Magi's spin off about Sinbad to see if it was already getting bad back then (well, Magi's ending was definitively bad in my opinion, but who knows).

@@Stinkoman87 Supposedly, the virus prevents artificial insemination. For... some reason. ...Although... I guess you could explain it by saying that the virus integrates specifically into the Y-Chromosome. But that doesn't make sense, assuming the immune individuals would also have immune sperm cells. Unless it's not a direct chromosmal defense, but rather something like a restriction enzyme, which is _unlikely_ in eukaryotes such as ourselves given our significantly more complex DNA... Long story short, it's complicated. And the mangaka _probably_ doesn't have a sufficiently extensive biology background.
