Hotline Miami - The Subversion of Expectations

Ойындар

In Hotline Miami, Dennaton has crafted an amazing ability to build up an expectation of what's going to happen, and then play with that expectation to surprise players. Let's take a look at some prominent examples see how they do this, and what effect it has on the players.
Yeah, I said I was done with Hotline Miami, but this is something I've always wanted to talk about, and since I'm just getting back into the flow of making stuff, I figured now was as good a time as any. I did something a little different with the audio this time around. Lemme know if you like it or if you even notice. Also, new capture card, so all the footage is now 60fps! That's pretty cool, huh?

I think Evan is the best subversion. In the first mission, you think you'll go in and murder everyone. But when you go and beat down the first russian, Evan stops and goes to ask for medical help.

the best part is, is that trying to pick up guns will just make him disassemble them which is actually pretty useful because it renders the gangsters the guns belong to useless, but it's still pretty funny

You'd also think Evan would be a pain to play as considering the series's gameplay being quite heavily murder focused. However, with his extremely quick pacifist takedowns and the ability to keep a chain going by disassembling guns. Evan becomes a possibly more efficient fighter than any other character in the series.

Martin Represented the player saying "its just a game" but the truth is we keep playing playing this game over and over again trying to get a better score everytime. We do enjoy the violence since we try to find new ways to kill the enemy. Hince Richard asking "Do you like hurting other people?" Jacket had the right number, if you look closely at chapters Revenge and Resolution, you can see that the initial room is the same, thence indicating that Jacket went to the building were the janitors were, but just took the wrong path (he went straight up stairs while he should have gone to the door on his right). The janitors were hiding in a russian club to not raise suspicion, which they did until they were found by biker.

Came here to post this, on closer inspection the layout of both levels is sliiightly different, with one of the rooms being one tile bigger, but i think this is an accident caused by how rushed the development was. The best subversion of expectations I've seen in Hotline Miami and in any game was when Richter shot Jacket and I pressed B to restart, but instead of a boss fight, the game established that from now on, your actions had consequences, and Richter shooting you actually happened

I wish to point out that the biker appears in HM2. Launch up the subway level and play the cutscene. You will end up in Evan's house. Normally you are to go and do something before you receive a phonecall. If you get in the game for the first few seconds, rush over to the phone and press the interaction button on the phone before you are called. You won't see a pop up. (Hence, it's hidden, lol) if you listen to the phone call and continue to do the level like usual, the tape will end with Evan rounding in a club with all main characters, dead and alive. With biker giving you an interview on his side of the story. Feel free to try it out yourself!

One of my favorite subversion of expectation is after playing the Henchman's introductory chapter, and start the next chapter, you expect to play as the Henchman again with there even being a weapon laying next to him. You expect maybe he is going to go on a drugged up killing spree, or an anxiety induced rampage, but then the fans' van come screeching in, forcing you to play as one of them instead of the henchan. Something pertaining to the topic that I believe you missed; when playing as Jake, we notice he has three masks. Understanding that a mask is unlocked after each level, we as the player expect to have at least three levels with Jake. However, as we all know we only end up having two levels, in some cases not even finishing it, before Jake is executed.

Something that surprised me is the first bomb room in Hotline Miami 1. I didn't expect that. I didn't notice all the wires and stuff. I thought it was just decoration. It fucking scared me.

Nobody won between the Jacket vs Biker. They both injured each other and thought the other died but since Jacket was in a coma and Biker was high as fuck, they dont remember what exactly happened, hence the two perspectives and outcomes of the fight.

I've replayed both games a lot lately and I've noticed another thing this game absolutely nails. Venerability. No other game makes you just as venerable as the enemy like hotline Miami does. While you have to potential to kill an entire room of goons, they can just as easily end you. They go down in one hit and so do you.

One thing you missed is in HM2, during the assault of the Fans on the new headquarters of the mafia, where before entering the building, Mark says he doesn't think he can make the jump to the other building. Later, we see a dead body on the floor, covered with a sheet. You assume it's Mark, who didn't make the jump, and only at the very end you learn that it's the son that fell to his death
