Hotline Miami 2 Level Editor Tutorial Part 3 - Cutscenes

Hello everyone! The Hotline Miami level editor has been out for a long while now, yet no one ever made any video tutorials explaining how it works. It still can be very confusing to new players, and there's tons of hidden tricks and work-arounds that even experienced player may not know about. These guides aim to cover every aspect of the editor, from level design to mods to entire custom campaigns!
This episode we cover how to make cutscenes so cinematic Stanley Kubrick would shed a tear. There's a trillion aspects to the cutscene editor, but we just tried to show you the basics of Frames, Actions, and triggers so you can get creative on your own.
Also, never add cutscenes at spawn in a combat level. Ever.

For the record, it is possible to make an intro cutscene that will play once, but not after you die

That outburst about cutscenes at the beginning of a combat level was so satisfying.
The only acceptable cutscene to put at the beginning of a level is the henchman cocking his gun, because the game autosaves or something after that and makes it so the animation doesn't play after you die.
I was listening with headphones and 8:58 made me jump.
Thanks so much for making this video, it really helps a lot, I felt like a coding master when I made a functional cutscene with dialogue

SAME I literally just made a title called "your dead" (spelled wrong for the memes) where the guy just says your dead then tries to kill you. dumbest level ever but it feels like an accomplishment actually making something

After 2 years there's finally Level Editor tutorial on KZread, thank god
just a thing i found there is roughly 1 second difference between the time you start the level and the time where you restart so if you have a really short cutscene at the start of a level you can bypass the restart issues doubt you can use this for fuck all but worth a mention
Note: To end the cutscene, go to "add action", and then "stop sequence"
I find it funny how I used a cutscene before a combat level on my first campaign

I placed some dialogue and later on put Pardo in to add a little more. The dialogue that was made before is totally ignored now. I used frames for each action.

Good tutorials, can't believe they are this recent too. I want to note that naming the NPCs too long causes problems with cutscenes. I was testing stuff out after watching this, and naming an npc too long caused cutscene to start while editing. The save got corrupted. Same thing happened again with another save (I thought reason of crash was different), I force quitted as the animation was playing in edit mode. Seems like the save got corrupted again but only slightly this time. I can't put down weapons my character uses, I can't fire a gun that I pick up and only certain actions of the cutscene is not working properly. TL;DR: Caution as you name your NPCs.

interesting... I've had a cutscene trigger while editing before and it scared the living daylights out of me. Maybe this was the cause
Is it possible to have 2 separate cutscenes per floor? What I mean is something like this: There’s a diner, and the main dialogue exchange happens at the counter. After it’s over, you can leave: OR you can go to a table where the guy you’re playing as comments on what’s going on. Like 2 separate triggers for two separate cutscenes.

Yes, when you use the stop sequence command, DONT check the box to end the scene. Then add a new frame and click the add trigger button again and draw it where you want it. There you can create the second cutscene. however the two cutscenes must be done in order. You cannot trigger the second cutscene until the first is done

26:48. One way is to edit an NPC/furniture sprite in any Picture editing software with multiple frame animations and remove ALL pixels in those sprite animations then Place a single pixel on the very last frame animation. The first frame of the sprite will be invisible and you have to Place a single pixel on any other sprite frame so that it can be patched into the game without a full black screen. Then you patch that 'invisible' NPC/furniture into the game. Next is to open up the key item sprite and re-sprite an NPC/furniture with the keys. Patch that NPC/furniture into the game. Now here's the trick: Place the key sprite as an NPC/FURNITURE that you had RE-SPRIT'ED anywhere you want in your level and make it non-solid as a cutscene NPC. Then add a trigger to the NPC/furniture keys as a click trigger. Then add a frame + action where you change the key sprite into the invisible NPC/furniture. That makes the keys dissapear when you click on them. Now Place the invisible NPC/furniture AT a door. This one has to be placed to BLOCK the door from entry so make the NPC/furniture solid. Now give the invisible NPC/furniture that is blocking the door a movement path. Make the invisible NPC/furniture move away from the door into a Place where it wouldn't block the player anymore. This movement has to be FAST, otherwise there will be a pause when you pick up the keys. Then you're done. The cutscene will play as follows: Pick up keys, keys dissapear, invisible NPC/furniture at door runs away fast, door is free to enter. BUT you could also do an alternative for Visual pleasure to help guide the player. Place ANOTHER invisible NPC/furniture behind the door (On the other side) and add a Quick click trigger on it without adding any frames/actions for it. Then it will display an Arrow pointing at the door to help players know their goal. The reason why the Arrow has to be on the other side is so that players don't go to the door too early or actually click away the Arrow when trying to interact with the door. But for even more pleasure you could add your own sprite with an Arrow and a key beneath it that tells the player that keys are required to enter. Make that sprite non-solid and make it dissapear once the player had JUST gone through the door. I could show you the process if you'd like.

ComputerPwn a dynamic firefight is not possible because the ai will only attack you. You can make npc that have specific attacks but the ncps will not also attack the player

Didn’t Evac have a scene where your allies opened fire on a huge room of enemies and if you walked in too early you’d get shot by enemies that are still alive? I know they can’t be NPCs because they were patrolling.
yo man, is there any way i can make just a single floor end with picking up an item? i know you can end an entire levels with one, but can you complete individual floors with an item?

For some reason i cannot do cutscenes at the end of a level,they need to be added before building and in a different level,like a campaign if you want. Can you guys help me a little bit here?

A little belated, but how would you cause a cutscene to trigger once all the enemies are dead, as in not through a cutscene door, but rather immediately once all enemies are dead, like in Ambush where Beard talks the other ghost wolves on the walkie-talkie right after he's done killing the soldiers?

Rob, when I make a cutscene where the player walks to a location, hitting WASD will move the player during the cutscene and fuck it up, how do I fix it? :(
Hey bro, Do you know how to make one so that at the end of a cutscene when you get in the car, you immediately go to another floor or level? Just like when you finish the first levels of hotline miami 1 or like in the "hunter" mod that there is an intro, they get in the car and then the level starts.

@@robracer97 I was trying to make an intro for an single level, something like the first hotline Miami. You pick the phone, go to the car and the level start, but I was looking on steam and that just works on campaigns, no single levels. So yes, it works now, thanks for all and sorry because I can explain myself :p
I know you said that we shouldn't put a cut-scene at the beginning of a combat level, but could there be a way to bypass that by ending the level after the cut-scene ends? As a better example lets say the player gets shot at and runs upstairs to avoid the bullets. The level's combat would start on the second floor and dying would just start you off there, rather than forcing you to sit through that cut-scene again. Would something like that be possible or not?

Yea, but there can't be any enemies on the first floor else the transition wont activate
I attempted to do what you said regarding the crashes with Walk To on Floor 2 and no matter how many times I quit and restarted the game, the level still crashes when I press the Walk To Command on the silhouette. The response that keeps coming up states that it's a Microsoft C++ Runtime Error. I was wondering if you got this same error prompt when you tried to do the second floor cutscenes or if you got something else. Also, you mentioned at the 31:19 mark that there was another workaround. What is the workaround you were referring to?

For some reason I just can't get the attack command to work. I tried making Richter killing Biker, but nothing works. Biker does have a death sprite, Richter's uzi_attack sprite is selected, but when it should work, Biker just doesn't die, and the cutscene ends with Richter having the first frame of muzzle flair coming out of his gun. The cutscene does end right after the shot, so I might have to add a wait, but that's all that's coming to mind. I have also tried manually making Richter shoot Biker but neither does that work. Sorry for commenting again and again, I think this might be the third time, but you're the first person who comes to mind to help with this, and I am also thankful for the quick responses. PS: Do you know a place or server where I can get helpful advice like yours so I don't have to keep commenting?

Player characters don’t work with the attack command. You’d have to fake it where you play a sound effect while using the die command with biker. Only enemy sprites like the mafia can attack

I can't change the sprite of npc, when i change the sprite it turns black
Is it possible to make an npc to become an enemy after a cutscene who walks around and act like a normal enemy? How to do that? Using attack and set it to player does not work. The npc attacks but does not move at all

wesker005 no, an npc and enemy, while having the same sprite, are entirely different entities.
yo man I have a question if you're still active how can I make it so when you're done with the cutscene you can kill the person you're talking to then the level ends, because the bullets go right though him

Right click on the npc you want to be killed, click 'properties' check the box that says 'killable'

I can only get the "level clear" status when creating cutscene on the ground floor, not while creating it on other floors. Any ideas? Great tutorials btw. EDIT: I've got an example of it from a level I made on my channel.

Level Clear with cutscenes is rather buggy Make sure all enemies are dead and use the end scene checkbox when ending a cutscene

How do i make an npc dissapear or go in to a diffrent room
I have a level I'm making that has a note on the first, non-combat floor. I added a trigger to the note to activate the dialogue, but my character freezes immediately after the cutscene. Is this a fixable issue?

Look, I've spent a lot of time making these thorough guides, if you can't be bothered to use them you're SOL
This video is old but hopefully someone can help (can't find the answer anywhere else) I can't choose any npc sprites in the cutscene editor. It always selects a black square sprite and any other sprites in the dropdown are unselectable. Any advice?

Figured it out. Dont touch the camera when you enter the editor (which is the middle click button).

@@MISTERGUY1218 That's an NPC walking, then given a sprite ID of a car. You can see me do this in the Notepad++ video in this series. Also notice how both of those the car moves in an intro, not the main level.

Hey Rob, nice tutorials. I'm wondering if you can help me with this issue. In dialogues, I wanna use spanish accents, like "¿", "Ñ", "ó", etc. How can I change it to use them?

Hey Rob, I know i'm a little late. I have a question. After, i finish my level i want a cutscene to happen on the first floor. There is a dialog and then the player kills the last man, but it does not happen. I tried every possible way. Could you help a dumbfuck like me?

I'm assuming you're trying to get the player character to perform an 'attack' command. It's bugged, only enemy sprites will actually shoot bullets with an attack command. You're better off letting the player shoot the NPC themselves (make sure to set the NPC property to killable)

Boss fights are really tricky to make, especially if you don’t have access to NP++, if your campaign involves hammer my personal suggestion for a boss is to reskin a military enemy (not a normal one, dodger or fat, due to them having guns and being more akin to bosses) and have them as the boss. On a level for a cancelled campaign I made I had the last floor have only 1 melee weapon and a military dodger in the middle, and every enemy either had guns or was a fat so you were forced to shoot and then hide, and get the melee weapon to beat the dodger. Of course HLM2 isn’t really made for bosses. If you do have access to notepad++ you could use pre-existing bosses (and probably reskin them) but be wary that they can cause crashes/bugs (SWAT boss turns you into the big butcher when executed)

@@stewartsaurus5796note: military fats can have weapons thrown at them, and they will turn into a regular soldier. They can also be killed by blunt weapons. Hypothetically, if you don’t use soldiers anywhere else in your campaign, you COULD just change the sprites to all be fat, and maybe modify the midnight animal victim sprite because it turns into that on execution.
I want to kill npc in cutscene but cutscene ends before that and i dont know where is the problem. Does anybody know where is problem?

Known glitch where the walk command on floors that arent 0 crash the game. Make the scene in its own level as the bottom floor and then add it to the level you need it to be. Documents\My Games\HotlineMiami2\Levels\single

Kinda off topic question but how do I "embed" mods? Let's say I want to make a campaign featuring Donald Trump and I want others to just subscribe and be able to play the modded version. I tried fucking around with HLMwadexplorer but it didn't work when my friend loaded the map.

Go into the the Campaign's folder (Documents>My games>Hotline Miami 2>Levels(The path could be different for you)) and create a folder named "mods". Place the patchwad file there. If you want to embed a mod with an individual level, do the same but create a "mods" folder in the level's folder. Also mods changing certain things(sound,some textures) need to be placed into the normal mods folder(Documents>My games>Hotline Miami 2>mods
