Hotkrem CO2/TVOC Air Quality Monitor Review & Comparison

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I went on a trip to North NY a couple days before Christmas to take an Amish Family to visit with Family & Friends. I stayed in a Motel for a few days while they were visiting, and while I was there, I created a video reviewing and comparing the Hotkrem CO2 monitor, and also decided to talk a bit about my interaction with Jim from AirKnight, pertaining to their efforts in developing a new and improved Air Quality Monitor that encompasses 11 sensor readings, and they will also be implementing time and date as well. Jim also told me that in May of this year, they will have an updated AirKnight 9 in 1 monitor that uses a dedicated HCHO sensor and a dedicated VOC sensor, to eliminate the current TVOC/HCHO multi-use sensor that I suggested they do away with. AirKnight is truly moving forward to create a much better air quality monitor, and I so much look forward to creating a video showcasing these changes. Jim also told me that they will be working on adding 2 18650 batteries to replace the current LiPo battery that is in the AirKnight, so thank you Jim for listening to my suggestions, and also the suggestions from my viewers - much appreciated... After I returned home, I sat down and edited the video for upload. I hope you find this video entertaining as well as instructional.
If you like this type of video, please let me know in the comments about a subject you would like to discuss and I will do my best to create a video on that subject, or if you have a video idea for a DIY project, A review of a product or anything else, I will be happy to create that content as well.
Thanks for stopping by, and remember - find someone who needs to laugh, needs to smile, needs to cry, or just simply needs a friend - and make it happen ;).

    Thanks for your videos. You can contact any manufacturer and get a copy of their Safety Data Sheet (SDS) which listed any hazardous chemicals in their products. Ask for the one for the deodorizer you are interested in and it will tell you if their is ammonia or anything else in there. Manufactures are almost always listed somewhere on the product and often a phone number.

    @@gregory2421 It is weird that just after this video, the Hotkrem CO2/TVOC monitor has been sold out. I don't think it was because of this video, but hopefully it is just taking a while to get re-stocked, and I hope so anyhow, because I really like that monitor and hope they continue producing it. If you find another that you would like to know about, please let me know, and if I can afford to get it, I will do a video review of it. I am also looking myself for another comparable candidate as well. That Hotkrem has been out of stock for about 3 weeks now, so hopefully that means it won't be long before it is back in stock.

    I am not sure what to say about that. My Hotkrems are not so bad, but I am now seeing allot of people that have different opinions on theirs, so that suggests to me that with Hotkrem it is a hit and miss on accuracy, so also another reason I am not sure I can recommend Hotkrem for accuracy due to low quality control.

    I would have to say that I would definitely go with the AirKnight, but please do not do it right now.... There are issues with the AirKnight at the moment, and they are working out those issues as we speak, and should have an update to the 9 in 1 in March with better sensors. If you are looking for something right away, my second choice would be TemTop. As a matter of fact, I am going to be doing a video about TemTop very soon, as they have contacted me to do a collaboration with them on a new monitor they are developing, and they are asking me to beta test it, and work with them on producing a quality monitor. The TemTop M10 and C10 would be my choice after AirKnight, but like I say, I would wait on AirKnight until they get their updated 9 in 1 out which should be in March of this year.

    I just thought that I would make another suggestion. The reason I mention AirKnight is because I was not quite sure what type of information you were looking for in a monitor. But since I have re-read your comment, I am assuming that PM is your most concern for testing purifiers, and with that said, the Hotkrem is a great choice if you need to test Particulates. The Hotkrem is about the ONLY monitor that will go down to zero on all sizes it registers, down to .03 microns when I introduce it into a purified environment. Please stay tuned, as once my new case is complete, I will be doing a video on testing all my monitors to see which one will actually go to zero on it's readings, and so far it is the Hotkrem, so that should be an interesting video.

    Hello, thank you so much for reaching and making these videos. I just ordered the open case hotkim unit you have shown. My concern, is whether I can trust the results of the unit. I have to work in an area that has concrete dust. I’m having great difficulty in finding what micron size concrete dust actually is, so much conflicting information. Some say .03 microns, others say 3 microns. Will the hotkim unit detect these levels? Thanks

  • @Outside-In.

    @Outside-In.

    Cement particulate size is between 10 and 20 microns in size, so yes, the Hotkrem will register that. The Hotkrem "open case" monitor, registers from .03 microns to above 10 microns, so it should be able to detect the particulates of cement particle concentration. The Hotkrem is very accurate from all my testing that I have done with it, and it is one of the few that actually shows zero on all particulate sizes when I introduce it into a purified environment, so yes, I would trust what the Hotkrem registers as legit... Thanks for the comment, and concern, and am hopeful that I have been able to answer your question. 👍

    1 Cubic Meter is 1000 liters of air measurement for the sensor to compute (takes some time for the mini fan in each device to clear 1000 litres of air before the values are updated) Hotkrem x/0.1L simply means it updates the values for every 100ml of air measured. This is very fast.

    Great information and I ordered a Hotkrem particulate monitor as a result through Amazon. However, after many hours indoors, it is regularly showing all PM values at 0 apart from 0.3 and 0.5 which is currently showing as 38 and 28 respectively. So I believe my unit is faulty. Would you agree? (I live 180 metres away from a freeway that sees 80,000 cars a day.)

  • @Outside-In.

    @Outside-In.

    3 ай бұрын

    Yes, I do believe something is wrong with it. It should not be registering all 0's, and 38 is too low for 0.3, so you are right, your unit is faulty. I am hearing this allot lately about the Hotkrem, so I am only recommending them mow with caution, and that is unfortunate. I would love for someone who has a faulty one that can afford to do it, send it to me, and maybe I can find out if there is something that could be consistent with what may be causing the Hotkrem to be faulty, and hopefully it would be across the board and then I could create a video on what to check and how to fix it. Take the Hotkrem apart and check the circuit board for faulty solder joints, or bad connections, as that is what it sounds like to me is happening to all the Hotkrems that are faulty. Thanks for your question, and I hope I have helped. If you can check your circuit board for faulty solder joints or bad connection, and find the problem, please let me know here so I can pass along that information. 👍👍

    Thanks for the questions Nickalaughin, I will try to answer then in the order asked... 1. Any news on that ne Airnight?: I think you meant "new Airknight"... I haven't heard anything on the New AirKnight, but the updated 9 in 1 is supposed to be out in May. 2. I try resetting the calibrating the HCHO, says it should start flashing "HCHO" but it doesn't. How should I calibrate it best?: First the M10 needs to be put into a fresh air environment for the best calibration. Second, make sure when you put the needle inside the tine hole, that it is straight up and down, and not slanted - or you will miss the button. Third, just press the button, and let go, and the HCHO symbol should start flashing. It will flash for about 5 minutes, and then leave it in the fresh air environment for an additional 15-30 minutes before bringing it back into your house. I am getting ready to create two new videos, but am working on a new case before doing them. I have ran into some issues building the new case, and it is taking me a little longer than expected LOL. Should have the new case finished soon, so I can continue testing monitors. I am glad you like the videos, and happy to hear that the Hotkrem 5 in 1 is serving you well. I like my two Hotkrems also. Thanks again for your comment and questions, I hope that my answers have helped. Remember, when you push the needle inside the M10, make sure you are holding the M10 and the needle straight up and down (perpendicular to one another), and not on a slant, as it is easy to miss the small button on the inside to start the calibration.

    Thanks Gabak for the question. I can only speak about those that I have tested and reviewed. I would say that the best so far has been the Hotkrem for Particulates. I am sure you are looking for a monitor that registers PM, HCHO, TVOC, AQI and CO2, and with that said, so far the best in that category is the TemTop M10 and the C10, and both together would be about 180.00 US. If AirKnight had their updated 9 in 1 finished, I would recommend the AirKnight, but at this time, the AirKnight is not trustworthy. I hope this helps in your search. I just can't recommend anything that I have not personally tested - hope you understand.

    @@gabakbusiness Unfortunately they don't have a monitor with all features. You could look at this Hotkrem which registers PM 2.5. 1.0, 10, 0.5, and 0.3 micron, and also CO2: www.amazon.com/HOTKREM-Quality-Monitor-Detector-Indoor/dp/B0BWQ2TPM5/ref=pd_ci_mcx_di_int_sccai_cn_d_sccl_3_7/136-3484219-7714427?pd_rd_w=EeUQz&content-id=amzn1.sym.751acc83-5c05-42d0-a15e-303622651e1e&pf_rd_p=751acc83-5c05-42d0-a15e-303622651e1e&pf_rd_r=9KQN7ARGZ4DAR11YCFDM&pd_rd_wg=TAWk5&pd_rd_r=281bf105-7a84-49f2-b32e-ea2efc135fd5&pd_rd_i=B0B9S7857S&th=1 The Hotkrem along with the TemTop M10 would be around 160.00, so that way you would also have HCHO and TVOC as well. It is hard to find a monitor with everything, because I believe it is to make more money having to purchase multiple monitors which in my opinion is very unfair to consumers, and why I am constantly looking for a device that incorporates everything in one device. I am currently working with AirKnight, that has led them to develop a new monitor, but I am not sure when that will be out, so for now the Hotkrem and TemTop (from what I have tested) is the way to go. I will get other monitors as I can afford to purchase them, but for now, I have simply run out of finances to continue buying monitors to review, as every video I do comes out of my pocket, which only allows me to do so much. I wish I could be of more help, but until companies start sending devices for me to test and review, it can take as much as two months to get a device. I contact companies from time to time, but Outside In just doesn't have enough subscribers to interest them in sending their devices to me for review.

    @@RuudyL That might be something that you could write Hotkrem about. I have written them myself with suggestions, and CO was one of them, so we will have to see what happens. Allot of times, a company needs many requests from many people to make the change, as I guess it is hard to make a change just because one person wants it...

    Yes Joe, it has been gone for the past month, and don't know when it will come back. A lot of people are complaining that the Hotkrem doesn't work, so I would have to say it is because there is no quality control from Hotkrem, so not sure I can recommend Hotkrem any longer. I have contacted Hotkrem several times for comment, and they have not once responded to me, so yet another reason I will have to recommend people to look elsewhere. Thanks for you comment - much appreciated.

    Wrong! Your devices aren't matching at all. You're just comparing numbers without the scale. It's like comparing a Celsius thermometer to a Fahrenheit one and claim it's good when they show the same number. It's not! The left TVOC is in PPB whereas the right one is in mg/m³. With an average of 110 g/mol 70 PPB is about 0.32 mg/m³, so 0.07 mg/m³ is way off!

    Thanks Marcus for the correction. I just wish that companies would stick to a standard way of measuring data. Besides - the Hotkrem CO2 is for CO2 monitoring, and the TVOC is just extra, but the most important is the CO2, and me personally, I wouldn't even pay attention to the TVOC reading on any monitor as they are mostly pointless anyhow, because rubbing alcohol will cause a TVOC reading to show dangerous when it is not dangerous at all, or paint odor will also cause TVOC to go off the charts, and if Paint odor was dangerous, then I would say that the population of the world would have never made it as far as it has LOL. TVOC in my opinion is pointless because you have no idea what the sensor is actually detecting (as there are about 10,000 VOC's), so therefore have no idea if what it is detecting is even dangerous, it could just be the candle fragrance from the candle we just lit, and that is why I do not like TVOC readings. I guess I need to start making more of a point about TVOC in videos, as it should not be something to get overly paranoid about.

    @@joeshmoe7899 A CO2 monitor also comes in handy if someone says they are having problems, and then you can take it to where they are (if close by), and test their environment, - that is what I like to do anyhow LOL.... If you prefer gauging ventilation via TVOC, that is fine, but I would never ever discount CO2 levels. TVOC is something you can not only see, but smell as well, but CO2 has no odor or taste, so no way of knowing the levels, and why it is so important to have a monitor to check the levels from time to time, especially if you start having health issues you can't explain.... Just a thought.

    @@Outside-In. spaces are designed to accommodate occupants, so it is rare that co2 would exceed allowable limits. VOC is generally not considered in design. Poor choices in building materials, furniture and contents are a wild card. Beyond initial co2 check, VOC is the on going variable that needs to be watched. Leading to changes in the VOC sources and/or ventilation. If VOC is under control, co2 is rarely a concern. Far harder to control VOC.
