I'm only 5 minutes in but not liking what I just heard. She said the ad said "cheap Gay B&B" and that it was "loathsome and tacky!" I thought she was referring to "cheap" but no! She was turned off by "Gay!" She then said "you don't want to turn away straight people do you?" Ruth, learn to deal with reality. There ARE Gay establishments, they do NOT want straight business and they are NOT TACKY!!!. How dare you?

I take your point. I wasn't sure what to think at first, but was certainly taken aback. Then I wondered if it wasn't what she said but perhaps how she said it. I would bet that she wouldn't have objected to some notice that the business was Gay-owned, but that the way it was worded, "Cheap Gay B&B," made it sound like a fleabag of a place to flop and also, perhaps, a place to "hook up." As she said, it didn't reflect what he was offering (i.e., the place is much nicer than that and as such warranted a better angle with the advertising). Also, people who are not in a minority group don't realize that sometimes not only do you want to be around your own, you also want to support businesses that are owned by your own. As worldly and sophisticated as Ruth is, I can hardly believe that she is actually homophobic, but only that she isn't always as tactful or sensitive as she could be. My two cents, anyway. : ) (P.S. - Do you really think that Gay-owned establishments don't want Straight clientele, or are you perhaps reacting to the fact that Gay people not only don't always feel welcome but in fact are not welcomed by Straights? I understand your anger, and am not always as calm and collected as I may now seem (i.e., see below, lol), and I know firsthand that the high road can be an isolating, frustrating place to be, but I would hope that some good could come by Gay-owned establishments setting an example of how others should be accepted and treated, perhaps changing some minds and attitudes of who Gay people are and what we are like along the way. Again, just my two cents.)

Calm down. Not everything is an outrage. It was about the cheap and the gay she even said that it didn't describe what was offered there (i.e., it is not a cheap hostel but a beautiful and rather expensively decorated hotel). As for the gay well like it or not that was excluding half his potential clientele. That is just a fact and the bottom line is the income because he was in danger of not being able to finance his acting anymore. Im British, or I was at least , born and bred - I’m over in Texas - sort of stuck here now - I came in 1992, it was all wonderful making a life here, career, buying things, building etc. it all came to a screeching halt. I’m so dreadfully alone now, completely broke, I brought my parents here to America - my mum and Dad died, I am sort of in shock that this is my life, my son was taken - my career gone - I am clinging to the vague idea that being British is my home and identity. I’m not sure who I am now but I know I watch these shows and pretend with every fiber of my being that I was there , In London or the British countryside and I was content, free and had British friends and somebody wanted to hold my hand and walk through the village or over the downs…. I’m so completely lost here now the moneys gone the people have disappeared… I just want to go home. But where is my home 🇬🇧🤷🏻♀️

Are you retired? If you went back what would you do? Do you have family that might help you to go back? Start with a small plan for this day, this week and then next month. Don't look at a big picture but find ways to deal with the small stuff. Reach out to your community for help. Do not give up because there is always another way to do something. Best wishes to you from Florida.

I just wanted to add a note of support here. BJ Brown made some very apt suggestions. If you have worked more than 10 years in the United States and of retirement age, I believe 62 or above, you should be eligible for Social Security even if you go back to England. I don’t know if you still hold a British passport, but if so, are there subsidies for which you would be eligible in the UK? Housing in particular. Likewise is there a social network of friends and/or family who might be able to help in some way, perhaps inviting you to stay with them for a time when you first return. Are other ex-pats living in your part of Texas? And here’s one idea that perhaps might be feasible in this age of Covid. I wonder if there is an online (zoom) book discussion group based in England which you could join. I wish you all the best. 🙏🏼

Since I'm a huge history buff, this place would be right up my street & would LOVE Robert hosting such a personalized tour! Luckily, I could easily fit in the 'cupboard size' ensuite. It appears from Tripadvisor they were still open (review from 2019). Unfortunately, I didn't read any mention of a guided tour. Since this was also Robert's home, he likely had a better chance of surviving Covid. Hope all is well with him and the business. He seems to be a very nice guy.

Disclose? What an ugly, prejudicial word. Disclose is almost exclusively used for negative or distasteful things that need to be shared. His sexuality is absolutely irrelevant, in the same way that the race or gender of the owner would be irrelevant. There are dangerous people who may have a gripe with any particular type of person, whether they be Black, Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, Gay, Non-Gay, etc., and thus may present a danger, so suggesting that singling one of those out for "disclosure" (what an ugly word!) is ridiculous and comes off as veiled homophobia. Perhaps you should also disclose when a guest who is Gay registers for a visit so that anyone else booking for that time would know? If you say no, then you see how ridiculous it would be to "disclose" his own sexuality.

@@harrywright2408 I 'm sorry, perhaps, or more than perhaps, I overreacted. It's very hard to tell what is behind comments sometimes, and I was getting a very mixed vibe from yours and was left quite puzzled. I generally come at things as curious rather than furious, which obviously failed me in this instance. I understand what you mean about not wanting to have someone homophobic in your home, although for those wanting to cause trouble, advertising the fact that you are queer and seeking a gay clientele would seem to be on par with waving a red cape in front of a bull. In any event, I could have found a gentler way of stating my counterpoint, and I apologize for not having done just that. : )

I really like Robert, hes got a great sense of humour
What a heartwarming, humorous and agreeable to look at Host Mr Robert is! Ruth Watson and him where a delight to watch and together with Alister, this episode moved me to tears. Happy tears.
This is such a pleasure to watch this episode, Robert is a lovely person. I love his home and Bed and Breakfast - its just an extension of Robert and the lovely character he is. I would love to go and stay there -it looks so comfy.
I’ve been obsessed with this series coming to it about 15 years late lol. And all I can say is this is my favorite episode so far. What a lovely guy and I think Ruth did a great job here. Well done all. X
Bless his heart, such a decent respectful human being!
The bathroom scene is hilarious...the suspense and then Ruth's reaction as if she's found a dead body! Do hope you can find Sparkles Hotel...that was a total hoot

I have boxes and boxes of tapes and DVDs to still go through, many of them unlabeled, which means I have to view each, one by one, to see what they contain. Doing my best with the time that I have to devote to it! Glad you and everyone else are enjoying them.

A great episode, and good to hear that it's still operating.
He is sooo lovely ☺️

He listened pretty good ,proud of him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💞🥰🤗
What lovely charming man. I wish I could be as graceful.
The ending is just LOVELY....good on him & hope he does well.
Loved this episode. Everything flowed so smoothly. I can’t imagine anybody not being able to get along with Robert.
Alistair Sawday is such a legend. So pleased the wonderful eccentricity of Robert found its rightful place.
I'm glad for Robert because I really thought he would receive a "No" due to the breakfast and bathroom. Alistair was a class act, very sophisticated and personable, probably recognized the same in host Robert, along with his charming home.
Love this post and love Ruth - thanks :)
What a lovely man Robert is. I love the place.
Checked online to see , could see reviews dated back to 2018 , all good reviews. Hope they are still doing great
Ruth did very well, she is such a serious worker - love it.
Thank you! hope you manage to find the sparkles hotel, blackpool! it has to be the best episode ever!

That episode is now available on my channel. I hope you will enjoy it.
This is hilarious! I think Ruth may have reached her limit here but it's great fun to watch. Thanks for the show.
I like the small ensuite addition. I think the BnB makes more money from three bedrooms instead of two large rooms. Another great example of Robert's "outside the box" thinking skills!
The reparté between Alastair and Robert is delicious!
Lovely man.. extraordinary exchange 😊
I would have love to stay there!
wonderful
Love him ! Love her!
He should have made one larger room ...hate bathroom in cubby
Robert seems fun…and open..The inspector was abit grand with locally sourced…But he appreciates quirk…kudos
oh, but Miss Julia has the most wonderful voice--

Thank you 🎉
Both men are lovely. Next time I'm in the UK wouldn't mind staying there.
❤how lovely I thank you for the video!
What a charming man!
That bathroom was tiny but it’s not totally unusual for a boutique European hotel. I stayed in a room in a Venetian Hotel (San Marco) where you definitely couldn’t sit straight on the toilet 😅. I wasn’t able to go onto the current website for St. Alfeges as I kept encountering security warnings. The Trip Advisor etc sites seemed outdated too.
He’s such a sweetheart.
That show was made October 2007 things have changed since 😊
Where the f**k is the bed going to go! Hahaha I love Ruth . I didn’t like her at first but she really doesn’t hold back.
Robert is an absolute sweetie! Wish he lived next door to me!
So good ♡
This is like a breathe of fresh air 🎉
Robert nice guy!
I have been binge watching this show and love it. One question though, why does Ruth never take her coat off.
@skontheroad
Жыл бұрын
As someone who has been self-conscious of weight gain myself, I always wore dusters and long coats, etc. to cover up my size until I slimmed down. I found it the best way to feel comfortable and confident while still looking professional at work. That is my guess.

I think it is kind of her “signature look”-from the graphic at the opening of the show
@mangoyacho

@bears1782001 I guess the coat is a very effective marketing concept that signifies "an inspector" all straight and proper - just like a doctor's white coat. I cant ever imagine her without the coat. I love that signature look!

From what I understand, she has very bad psoriasis and she may very well be trying to cover up as much as possible. It's nice that it seems to have had the pleasant concomitant effect of bringing about her signature look.
Even when I was an employee, A manager, I had, taught me, upon arriving fo work, look at the place, is it clean? Etc, Served me well over the years!
Great episode!!!
Ruth was much better than Alex i miss her :( she always made me laugh.
I’d love to stay here I adore cats 🐱
loved it

Are there any black hoteliers in the UK?
Rugby 🤨socks! He loved that. Such an amazing character and I think it’s important to disclose that he’s a gay owner, it’s a safety thing. I wouldn’t want to attract any potential danger into my home.

@@inhighspeed I’m sorry I seem to have offended you. Not the intention, I’m am queer myself and wouldn’t want to share my home with a homophobic person, hence why I said that. Sorry if I touched a nerve. It wasn’t my intention.

@@inhighspeed No problem, I have googled “disclosure” and I honestly didn’t think of the negative connotations of the word. I understand more now. I honestly didn’t mean to offend.
Greenwich is NOT Central London.
@inhighspeed
3 ай бұрын
Technically, perhaps. To foreigners, Liverpool is central London. Greenwich is part of greater London, and to visitors from abroad it's hardly chalk and cheese.
I like Alex Polizzis way better than Ruth, but I seen all of Alex's Hotel Inspector. 😢
Too much bad language. 👎🏻
A hotel that has a room so small you have to advertise it as, "slim and single only, room, lol."🤣🤣🍾🍾💐💐👁👁❤❤🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜💥💥
