Your ex is the quintessential French (Parisian) "penseur" dude who has the soul of a philosopher but is contre-courant AF. It's hilarious how he literally is half of the teenage boys who go into Bac L. I like him, and I now can see the tremendous influence he had in shaping the way you perceive things. Juste un vieil adage pour la mémoire : Ne mettez jamais la clé de votre bonheur dans la poche de quelqu'un d'autre. Be happy, Damon!

The board game point is interesting. Yes, it doesn't necessarily harbor an environment for deep, honest conversation - but not everything needs to be an opportunity for depth. If every conversation we ever had was in-depth and required a ton of thought, context, experience, etc - wouldn't you be exhausted? and tbh... Even board games have opportunities for depth. Depth in a relationship doesn't solely rely on verbal communication. For me, communicating with someone through casual physicality and the vibe in a room harbors intimacy, be it romantic or platonic. You learn a lot about someone in casual, sometimes mundane conversations if you are really interested in learning about that person. And any interesting person can create interesting conversations, whether it's during a board game or a philosophy class. I loved this video and have the chance to talk about shit like this and just analyze things about humanity in so many different ways lol like damn not this actually is an in-depth conversation about the societal depth of a board game we love to see it

I think first dates should be boring lol. Cause I wanna make sure that I actually enjoy spending time with the person and I'm not tricking myself into thinking I like them. What if you think you like them but you're just having fun doing something new and interesting? I don't even like to be wined and dined on a first date. If someone wants to do a fancy diner I'll suggest drinks at a quiet speakeasy instead. Just be able to hold a convo for an hour. We can go all out on date #2 lol

It shouldn't be boring IMO but you should be actively having a conversation. Having something to do, like playing cards, or chess to use as an instrument when the conversation gets a bit quiet can come very in handy though. Because the first time meeting someone will always be a bit drier than usual.

Chances are, if I DMed you on IG or approached you in the street, you'd likely be more annoyed than anything else. But love? I wish just one KZreadr was honest: "thank you for finding my video interesting enough to watch it so that I can make money and I don't have to work as an occupational therapist or something and now I'm in Korea". That's it, that's all they have to say. k rant over lol

Okay my hot take is that all your landlord and all landlords do IS manipulate. Landlords create no value that the renter couldn’t do themselves as an owner, all landlords do is push renters out of the housing market by owning multiple properties and hiking prices. When housing insecurity is this bad, it’s villain behavior to profit off of people who don’t own a home when you’re financially well-off enough to not only own housing to meet your human need, but also own rental property as well. This sounds ridiculous but imagine if a squirrel is sitting in one tree and won’t “let” another squirrel climb into a different tree because “that’s his tree too”, we’d be like what? It’s crazy that humans can legally hoard need provisions. When my grandma passes away and we inherit her house, I want to let a family live in it for free because if we are blessed enough to have two houses, why not help someone? Not to come across as higher-than-thou but I want to measure my success based on how much I give, not gain, and our society would be crazy different and awesome if everyone held onto a crumb of that outlook.

I kinda love the ex's perspective in the sense that, he says a lot of what people are thinking but won't say out loud. I guess that probably goes along with what he said about people wanting to make others comfortable. He is a bit (maybe a lot 😅) cynical, but he also doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. I think he sorta alluded to that at one point. Overall, I really enjoyed this conversation! Definitely would love to see a Hot Takes Part 2.

Ooh, matching blue shirts? I like your ex's takes (he could almost be German, liking ARTE and hating fake friendliness, haha). Have him in more videos, so we get to know him better. Anyway, had a good laugh when he mentioned the "contempt" you both have for each other, lol. Surprised he said that "doing Columbians" line. So far I had the impression he was a rather quiet and private individual (hence the pixelation and hush-hush) as well as less daring, especially when it comes to quick sexual gratification. I'm intrigued.

I feel that there was this overarching theme of connection with others (first dates, parasocially, etc.). It's interesting how the ex interprets authenticity and honesty as if joy must often be forced. I have my own neurosis, but I prefer to give the energy I want back. I am genuinely excited to meet people for maybe the first and last time. I want to be coveted, so I covet others and appreciate what I can in the moment. Why should we give into the monotomy of life? I think I've noticed this change as I got out of my own head and applied more empathy to the human condition. It helps my mental state - especially since the 2020 panny 😂 But I was kind of thrown initially from the air of arrogance. Also quite amusing. Interesting hot takes.

Regarding the last hot take, I'm from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and one thing I've noticed that has always bothered me here is that a lot (definitely not all, but some) men, say I love you very quickly into a relationship, or even before and I'm always like "You literally don't even know me, you don't love me" at least not with the weight I think the words I love you should hold. So yes, in western culture, it is very easy to go "omg, I love you" and in that context, the context that you say about random things, people, places, your friends etc, it's easy and it doesn't hold the same weight as actually telling someone you love them/love this/are in love with them etc and REALLY meaning it. It's interesting also because unlike many other languages that have multiple words and meanings for the word love, english only has one word that means everything, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

I don’t know if it’s because I am French or not (tu sais qu’on aime débattre) but I disagree with many things your ex said haha Personally I love playing board games with people, especially when they are strategic. It gives you an opportunity to have a window on somebody’s way of thinking and also sometimes it brings out the worse in people (which I live for hahahaha). Regarding the rest, he seemed pretty blasé and très parisien (which is not a compliment in my mouth) avec une forme de supériorité dans son discours.. At least he said that conn*** was a good adjective to describe him, so I like the fact that he is owning up to it ! Anyway, it’s just a video, I am sure he’s lovely IRL. There is soooo much to take and have an essay written about some of these topics, I remember from a previous video and it was brought up again, about how he doesn’t like playing board games. To me I’m like HOW? I love it, my family, and friends too. Like I’ve had some of my deepest conversations with people during board games, some family members almost pee their pants cause or laughter, and laughter is good for the souls. It’s hard to agree with the statement that it’s just wasted meaningless time, when for me it’s the time where many can come together and smile, laugh, eat, get creative, and fellowship. Not every second of every day has to be focused to always talk about philosophy, or deep thought provoking questions. When sometimes games can make deep conversations arise.

I think the part on sexuality was very interesting, because I definitely agree with the notion that I wouldn’t want a friend to introduce me to others like “this is is my lesbian friend”. Although, I do also think it is a very personal matter whether you find this an important part of your identity or not? Because in my case, I do find it important and will probably mention that part of my identity because I am also interested in things that are connected to it e.g. history of the community, certain subcultures. etc. I don’t know if that makes any sense? I definitely wouldn’t want it to be used as an introduction or first impression since that just feels a bit icky tbh, and obviously there is more to a person than their sexuality!

The "I moved to _____" trend has always irritated me so much because many youtubers say they "moved" but in reality only stay one month. And I get it, its an engaging click-baity title, from many western youtubers travelling europe or asia but after some time it comes off as so unauthentic. I'm expecting to see someone grow or share life lessons, or their gripes with the new culture, but its just a highlight reel of a vacation. Thank you for bringing it up Damon!

About the social media comment, it’s so true that’s like it is expected in the society to keep up with all the lates jokes and whatnots on TikTok, IG and when someone who is still on some social media but doesn’t scroll mindlessly don’t get a reference, some people are so quick to act like you’re stupid and don’t know what is happening in the world. They’re so quick to judge and be rude, instead of asking “so why don’t you for example scroll on IG?” And have a conversation. I think some people do this because they them selves are afraid to deviate from the pattern of society. End of rant haha I love when you talk about thinks like this. Feels like it makes my mind wake up

for the last take, I see it 2 ways. I personally dont say 'I love you' often (probably not often enough) because it carries a lot of weight for me and i really mean it when it say it. but on the other hand, people can be so quick to call out things they hate right off the bat so why not be as frivolous/generous with expressing love? I dont think it would cause much harm unless you're being dishonest about it

I think you can love someone you never met. There's multiple ways of interactions too. Ex: Through social media. If a commenter/ fan leaves a comment that makes your day or you recognize them just from their profile or what they say, that can make your day, and you can love those interactions with them. You love their comments and their comments and their comments are coming from them so in theory I think you can love them.

yooo that last hot take!! bro I rant about that all the time. you are saying I love you to a camera to yourself and then editing yourself say I love you to yourself and then you release and thousands of people get it. but the human brain literally cannot conceptualice more than a couple hundred of people. if we are discussing the Greek concepts of love, I believe yes than you can take the “I love you”, in a universal human way but it really feels like caca

The EX really pointed it out on American culture “Omg! I love you guys” and KZreadrs moving to different cities. I think if everyone from the US shares their experience in Paris, are they not looking at it from a kind of similar sense??

  • @hj3130

Ok, so I totally wish you guys went deeper into the "OMG I Love you" Very American. After living in many countries I see that phrase I Love you isn't as casual. It looses its essence in America because we use it so casually. For instance in Italy they say "Ti Ago" I love you, BUT that is only for your lover, you can not say this to a friend or family you have another phrase which is "Ti Volga Bene" and even then you don't here that often. Great video, these our thought me and my friends discuss so its cool to know others are also discussing it.

this was such a cool example of how a franco-american couple/friendship can really complement each other (or head for disaster) -- once we get over being offended by each other, we are each refreshing for the other in our view on life (optimism/pessimism, dreams/reality, superficial/real connection...etc.). These nuances have a much better chance of being missed if you do not speak/understand the same language well. Raymonde Carroll wrote a very interesting book on this topic (in French and English) Cultural Misunderstandings/Evidences Invisibles
