Hot Press vs Cold Press Watercolour Paper Comparison | Watercolour Demonstration | Loose Watercolour

    What a great demo!! They look really different, especially with the hardness vs softness of the edges of the paint strokes and how much the paints blend on their own. Thanks for posting this!

    So glad to know you find it helpful! I love Baohong Academy, it is such great paper. Master’s Choice is a step up but I didn’t find that big of a difference between the two (which means that Academy is amazing!). Cold Press Master’s Choice has a more pronounced texture which I like.

    I have tried to paint along with some of your videos using hot press. I was perplexed at the results I was getting even though I was using mostly the same paints. I had no idea the paper would yield such different results (particularly the sky which I found to be the case myself).

    Very interesting! With such a lose painting style I discovered that I actually prefer smoother surface texture of the paper because I like to have some harder edges. I never tried real hot pressed paper, but even between the Canson Montval (much smoother) and the Arches there is a big difference (even if both are called cold pressed).

    I totally agree - each brand’s paper is unique. And hot press is so fun for those unexpected results and edges. I love seeing what watercolours can do on different surfaces, there is always this element of surprise ✨

    Nice comparison, I like the result you achieved on hot press 🙏 I like hot press for gouache but find it difficult to paint wet into wet watercolour on. There’s an artist on KZread Liron Yanconsky who is very good at using hot pressed paper for watercolour portraits etc. in a loose style.

    I bought a block of rough baohong watercolor paper (maters choice greg allen size) a few weeks ago and while I love the paper texture and quality of the paper, I find it wraps terribly. I don’t know if there is an issue with that particular block or what but I am pretty disappointed in that since the whole idea of getting and paying extra for a block is to avoid the warping. Other than that, great paper.

  • @AnastasiaMily

    @AnastasiaMily

    This is so strange! I've never experienced excessive warping with Baohong blocks. So sorry your one behaves that way. I have used rough paper, not in that size though (I've used both smaller and bigger sizes), and while there can be slight warping if I am using a lot of water the paper always returns to its shape after it dries. Maybe you can leave some feedback with the store you bought it from?
