Bad Street Brawler on NES is just a port of Street Hassle from the Commodore 64, except the music in the C64 version was better because it had better sound chips unlike the NES did.

Fun fact: the reason the graduation music started playing during your "WWF Wrestlemania" match between Savage and Hogan was because that was Savage's ring entrance theme. Also, you were right, M.U.S.C.L.E. were toys. They were small, rubber-like wrestling action figures that were in fixed positions. Kind of like the plastic army men all kids had back in the day. I actually still have a lot of those M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, and some of them are actually pretty valuable!

Great list, but I gotta disagree that Renegade is bad. The key to the controls is to not care whether you’re throwing a kick or a punch. All that matters is the direction you want to attack. It’s actually a fantastic control method for crowd control on beat em ups.

Man, I loved that Muppets game as a small kid. It's simple enough for kids to understand but just challenging enough to be fun. Again, as a small child lol which I imagine was the target audience even though The Muppets was kind of an all-ages property skewing slightly towards adults but with kid friendly characters. I sunk untold hours of my childhood into that game. The awful controls back then were just kind of seen as "it is how it is" and were kinda part of the challenge. I tried it again, multiple times, as an adult and just cycled between boredom and frustration and confusion so it's definitely not really good but I really enjoyed it in its time.

"I know for a fact that the NES can do better than four colors on the screen at once. The people who programmed this game just did a terrible job." NES tiles and sprites have a maximum of four colors, and since areas were filled per-pixel, there was no way to avoid crossing tile boundaries and violating the color limit if more were added. Dithering and patterns were literally the only straightforward way around this. While a coloring "game" was a terrible choice for the hardware, the programmers did what they could with it. They were probably hired by clueless managers who didn't understand the hardware limitations, and who were warned in advance about how much this was going to suck.

Deadly Towers isn't as bad as some would have you believe. It has a harsh difficulty level at the start, and is cryptic regarding where you should go, and what you should be doing. If you grind early, and get some decent equipment (speed boots, multi-shot swords) before trying the towers, and wait till all the towers are beaten before burning the bells it's a very manageable game. Not a good game, mind you, but not as awful as has been asserted so many times.

I think the biggest crime is the games that hurt to play, you just feel terrible playing BTTF 1. In comparison a plain or dull game isn't nearly the same bad experience.🤢 9:57 That's a video hardware limitation, the background layer only does four colors per 16x16 pixel block and only four 2bpp palettes with each having four colors. So I think their aim was allowing four colors to apply to anywhere on the canvas as a whole Ie. keeping the program setup simple. There are sprite blocks but not enough to spread over the whole screen without flickering too much, that is a discipline onto itself heh.😉

I'm surprised no-one ever released a ROM hack of Athena to correct its' atrocious controls and graphics (or just make it more 'arcade accurate'), considering the popularity of the character and of SNK as a whole. Though the arcade game was hot trash, too.

Did you grow up with the NES, or are you a "retro gamer"? I was 12 when it was released in the US, and at the time it was amazing simply because there was nothing else like it. Also, do you have the instructions for the cartridges? (They tend to help you figure out how to play the game) If not, its kinda silly to complain that you can't figure out how to play the thing.

I appreciate your sacrifice to humanity. Here are a few more terrible titles to stay away from: Legend of the Ghost Lion: this would actually be decent if it wasn't an RPG. The combat is completely pointless (you gain levels by opening treasures, not battles), and the battle music makes me want to pour fire ants in my ears. Adventure Island: c'mon, you know I'm right. It wouldn't actually be terrible if you didn't play the exact same five stages ad nauseum. Remote Control: It's like Double Dare, only just the quizzes and no mini-games. Caveman Games: ugly, difficult to control, and so short that it barely qualifies as a rental. There's not even an ending. King's Knight: absolutely f*** this game. No, you know what, don't even give it that honor. Set it on fire. Take it to the firing range. Stick it in your oven and melt it. Throw it into a wood chipper. Captain Planet and the Planeteers: actual toxic waste is better than this game. Even with Game Genie, it's completely impossible. Darkman: (vomits for 9 hours straight) and because I can't resist controversy... Pro Wrestling, Paperboy, Marble Madness, Mickey Mousecapades, Skate or Die, Snake Rattle & Roll, and Rollergames. Also, Wizardry, Faria, Hydlide, and all the Ultima games. Yep. Even Quest of the Avatar. I show no mercy.

And I personally enjoy Tag Team Wrestling and WrestleMania. But more from being a wrestling fan than from either being remotely good. I prefer both to any other wrestling game on the console, except Pro Wrestling and Tecmo World Wrestling. Both require a good read of the instruction booklet to know the moves, and a lot of practice to get any good at them.

Most of these games are bad after the fact. I actually owed some of these carts, and some of them are grand in my eye (The music to Wrestlemania still hits that button). Although, it's probably 'cause at the time, we had to like what we had, or not play it, and I didn't have alot. Those rented from Radio Shack on Saturday (as RS was closed Sunday, so you got a two day rental for the price of one) was first come first serve, so if you didn't get there Saturday morning (which what kid would, we watching toons baby! Pass that cereal man!) you got left with the not so good games, which you had to force yourself to enjoy, because you was stuck with it for two days because you tired of the ones you own.
