Hospice Care Week | Tom's story
It isn't only the elderly who need St Luke's - sadly, terminal illness strikes young people, too.
With this being Hospice Care Week (5 - 11 October 2020), we're proudly supporting Hospice UK's campaign to highlight the vital end life care hospices have given throughout the pandemic by sharing 30-year-old Tom's story as told by his wife, Jess.
Tom, from Tavistock, had a brain tumour and when his deteriorating condition meant he needed end of life care, it was devastating news for this young couple and their family. Then, along came COVID-19 and dealt them another cruel blow - watch our video to find out what it takes to ensure that even the pandemic is no barrier to us reaching those who need us at the very toughest of times.
Thank you for all your support for St Luke's throughout the pandemic. Encouraging words, kind gestures and generous donations from our big-hearted community have kept us going despite these turbulent times. They'll be needed more than ever to help our charity meet the huge challenge of providing our vital service for patients and their families in the months to come, too.
Your kindness counts.

Thank you to those who have posted such supportive comments, it will mean a lot to Jess and her family, who are reading these. We hope this video will help other families going through a similar situation and break a few hospice myths along the way. We kindly ask that you are mindful that this is a family who are grieving and whilst we accept everyone will have their own personal view on this story and COVID-19, comments that are not constructive or personal may cause upset. Thank you Jess for giving St Luke’s the biggest gift of them all - telling your very personal story. You really are an inspiration ❤️

He could have died any day, is he going to spend his last weeks all alone without his family, that was really shocking and depressing to hear. Good that they arranged so he could come home and had some weeks with his family but he missed 3 of his last weeks with them, I can't believe it. It should be about quality, not quantity at that state. I really hope he was okay and didn't feel abandoned when he was stuck alone in that hospice.

what a tribute, he was loved and, in the end, that's all that matters. beautiful video.
This reminds me of a local gentleman dying of cancer in hospital recently who partitioned for his family to be able to see him. Only to be told no due to Covid. He ended up dying alone not unlike manny others in the same position, so terribly sad. I feel even more so for the children who die alone under the same circumstances 😔

That sounds so cruel. If you really try I'm sure there should have been a way to arrrange so that his family only meets him and not other patients or maybe one family member could have stayed with him all the time. And at that stage as an dying adult it should be his choice if he wants to risk getting Covid from his family. Makes me so sad to hear stories like this.
We just went through a similar circumstance with my husband. I am so very sorry for your loss. Our 4 adult children took off work for 5 months to help me care for John at home! It was terrible and so loving but so very sad. John died peacefully on July 16, 2020 after 8 months. He was a wonderful loving beautiful husband, dad and grandfather! Again, we are so sorry fir your loss! Loved your video!
So proud to be a part of the St luke's hospice plymouth retail team.... Sending love and condolences to Jess and her family😍

What utter tyranny. It's a hospice for a reason. Let them be with their loved ones!
This is why hospice is so important. They operate at a pace most suitable to the patients and are able to devote the precious time needed to ensuring a patient's final journey is as peaceful as possible. Up until March 2020 I would attend hospice day care each Monday, just getting together with 11 other men and women with life limiting illnesses, having chair exercise sessions, playing puzzles and accessing various therapies and enjoying a lovely lunch. We all pay what we can afford but we're not forced to do so. The fact that hospice relies pretty much solely on donations, I think, is deplorable. As this young lady has found, in the most traumatic of situations, is that she was/is surrounded by love from her first meeting with hospice staff/volunteers and her husband was in the best possible hands in his final chapter. We owe it to those like Tom to do all we can to keep hospice 'alive'.

Why is it deplorable? Is it underfunded or something? Or is it deplorable that we don't make a gesture with random people's money?
I hope she managed to make sure Poppy and the stepson continue to have a relationship.

really cruel not to allow visitors in a hospice. In Germany, they made the rule that dying persons were allowed to have visitors also during lockdown. Only one person, but better than nothing!

Life can be damn cruel. A loving, decent young father losing his life like this......I just don't have the words. So very sorry for Tom and for his lovely family and friends. Hospices really are very special places that help make things a little easier in those final stages. I think it’s so messed up how they don’t allow visitors at hospice! My father went into hospice last April and I thankfully seen him 2 hours a day before he passed but the only way my brothers could see him was through a window!!!! This still affects me after almost a year!!!! This is so messed up!!!!!! I feel bad for anyone who gone through the same stuff! Patients and family should be able to gather when death is near!!!!
It is so sad that the people in nursing homes and assisted living are not allowed, visitors. I understand that the residents are vulnerable and need protected but still so sad.
I'm sooo sorry my heart goes out to you.

Okay I think this is ridiculous. If someone is in hospice and they are dying, keeping their family away is the worst thing you can do. What more is COVID going to do to them than is already happening? That is just ludicrous. Not letting a dying person see their family because of COVID? If they catch it it's not going to do any more harm.

Cancer drags the best people out of the ,ife of loved ones while wicked people keep living to destroy those that love them, what A twisted world
KONICA MINOLTA KONICA MINOLTA KONICA MINOLTA
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 4:5, Jesus Christ is the only way, KJV...........
Isaiah 53:5, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes, we are healed. For salvation, people just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in the water and of the spirit. Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled with the Holy Ghost and rising again from the dead. That's what Acts 2:38 is. We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ... Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man, be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD. We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritans. Our salvation has to match-up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away. Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church. It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Jesus Christ was our perfect example back to God. He was baptized and received the Holy Ghost and we must be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost. He was holy and walked in righteousness and we must be holy and walk in righteousness. He died and rose again, and we must die to the things of this world and rise to walk in the newness of life. He prayed to the father showing us how to pray to the father. If you believe in this message, help spread it in the name of Jesus Christ. God bless you for doing so!
The fact that people have been kept from each other is absolutely disgusting. I don't just mean hospices and hospitals, although of course they are particularly emotive examples. But lockdowns and restrictions in general. No one should ever be kept from seeing their loved ones. It's criminal and inhumane.
That’s what you do as a mom, isn’t it. You repeat what your partner would say to your kids. Ours would be “shut up and eat your garbage…”, stolen from Ratatouille, but never better better spoken by our youngest son, aged 2. And that’s what I’d say to their dad.
Lockdown was a disgrace
