You had a lot of muscle aches from ringing that heavy bell high, huh.

Very impressive!!! Hosanna goes as high as some church bells in South Tyrol put on straight yokes. :D

Watching this is addictive.

Very beautiful! The big bell already has a symbolic name: Hosanna. Then other bells enter, as if they announce the rush of Mary and her other 5 friends to witness the resurrection of Christ.

I love the bold sound of that bourdon bell.

It’s like hosanna is telling a story to her children bells

Well, Med Space, asking Fred to define "fussing" and then telling him "don't reply again" isn't a particularly intelligent thing to say. Just sayin'.

I remember when I saw this 4 years ago... And KZread reccomended me this again 😂

This reminds me a lot of great paul(another Bourdon bell) I’m also imagining hosanna upside down like the other bells

I don't mean to be a pain, but this bell's clapper is designed for swing chiming. The counter balance slows down the swing time, yet it increases the impact on the bell's soundbow; and the higher up the bell goes, the heavier the clapper's impact.You can also see the clapper resting on the soundbow somewhat, muting the bell in the up position. It is well known that when leaf springs on drop hammers loose their rigidity, the hammer resting on the bell during chiming causes cracks up the soundbow. I would love to ring up something that big, but I wouldn't want to damage such a wonderful bell.

This is not normal operating procedure with this bell. With reference to the counter-balance increasing the impact I suspect there are a number of European bell-hangers who would argue that point - that is with 'flying' clappers not 'falling' clappers. The clapper resting on the soundbow is somewhat irrelevant considering the action of the clapper in a normal change-ringing bell. The cracking of bells by clock hammers with failed springs is not common - it does happen but considering the number of bells that have survived very many years with failed return springs I would suggest that is only part of the cause when a bell becomes cracked. That doesn't mean such a situation should be ignored - far from it! I get quite annoyed by clock hammers resting on bells.

ProfMoose incidentally if it were to have the equipment to go full circle. i.e stays and slider equipment. how big would this kit need to be. and am i right in thinking that Liverpool Anglican has the biggest full circle bell? how does hosanna compare to this?

Putting a stay on a big slow swinger like Hosanna would be interesting... To adapt Hosanna would require a very short stay or possibly some arrangement with a pendulum slider... Not sure I'd want to test it. If you say Liverpool tenor is the largest full-circle ringing bell people get all stroppy and say there are larger in Italy. I'll say it is the largest bell designed and hung for change-ringing in the English tradition. I bet someone still bleats on Italy... Hosanna is about 3.5 tons heavier than Emmanuel (Liverpool Tenor). I expect some pedant will want to correct that to umpteen decimal places too.

ProfMoose thanks for the answer profmoose. yeah the Italians from what i can gather go beyond full circle and their bells might drag the odd peroni drinker up the tower. have you got any footage of being amongst the bells when they're down? i.e for human comparison beneath hosanna? many thanks in advance if you do.

if Hosanna had a stay, slide(?), more people ringing it, and a change ringing clapper, the world will have it's VERY FIRST change ringing bourdon bell.

Well, this bell which is tenor here is actually smallest in Riverside church, and this bell which is bourdon here is actually second bell of Riverside Church. Actually, quite cool in this case. And also, swinging angle is much smaller in Riverside Church

Next you will want a stay and a slider for it. Lol. Really nice sounding bell as is Great Peter. Pity Great Paul doesnt ring any more. Seen it twice? Once in 1963 when I was 10. it was manually rang back then. In 2000 got to see and video it ringing. I seem to have the only video on youttue of it ringing.

It was more of an accident. We had no idea how high Hosanna was until we got up there - it was a bit of a shock.

10 years between videos and two very different cameras... Hosanna has developed a brown stripe around his waist which does not always show depending on the light. Apart from that he's really grey with a hint of green.

He has an electric hammer which I guess the monks use for the Consecration during the Mass but I don't really know how they use him. He gets swung on special occasions when we are asked to ring the others.

The rope would go into the belfry and probably the bell will be damaged

There doesn't seem to be any reason why the bell would be damaged; just likely the rope would come out of the ringing room as was stated, the bell might take a few minutes to settle down (!) but it doesn't seem as if anything would be damaged too badly, it would just go through a full rotation and eventually stop. The rope would just need to be moved back into place and down the hole, and ringing could continue.

wow and wouldn't swinging a bell that large be putting strain on the baring or the mouth of the bell with the impact of the smacker as i am not sure what there called :) and i have also subscribed

Hopefully everything was designed with good safety margins. Hosanna was designed to be swung but not that high. The correct name for the smacker is a clapper. :-)

Yes it is possible but we have taken steps to help prevent it. We were all very shocked and a little frightened when we saw how high Hosanna was,

@AaronB 24034 No. Change ringing bells have stays to allow them to rest in the 'up' position. If the bell goes over the ringer lets go of the rope. Stays are designed to break if subject to undue force.

is that like not dangerous ? what if the bell suddenly caused the frame + tower to weeken couldnt they get sacked for the behavior or suffer dedly problems like wat of the bell berings gave way and broke off during the big swings

The frame and fittings are very much over engineered to give a good safety margin and the frame is designed in such a way the bell cannot fall through it.

It's scary because it's big but from an engineering view it's fairly simple to manage. Jet engines have to cope with far higher stresses for a lot longer - they also cost a lot more... ;-)

Hosanna is a very naughty bell! He was never supposed to go that high. We were very lucky something bad didn't happen. I blame the ringers - you know who you are!! :-) We've altered things to discourage anymore crazy upside down ringing.
