Custodes size: I have always imagined them as someone hit enlarge 100% on the photocopier. They are big Humans. All in proportion to a a standard Human. Astarte's are portrayed as been hulking, musclebound with trunk like arms and legs etc. In essence, an Astartes has the classic Dwarf physique compared to a human. Shrink an Astartes and a Custodes to normal human size. The Custodes looks like normal Human. The Astartes looks ill proportioned and lumpen.

I think Mike Lee pays homage to the novel Eaters of the dead. This novel starts with 2 chapters actually written by an Arabian traveler in the middle ages who comes across vikings and observes their rites. In the rest of the fictional novel he accompanies them as they're called to help a settlement who is under attack by a mysterious foe who comes down from the mountain and kidnaps their folk. This was also turned to a movie with Antonie Banderas called the 13th warrior.

Lindsay Priestly wrote the original fiction for when Tyranids were reimagined for Advanced Space Crusade. She creates Inquisitor Kryptman who has quite a long history and whose John Blanche art looks a bit like Rick Priestly!
I like the Emperor in the Last Church and the whole story. It's like while being in a rush, doing what's he doing, he wanted to explain himself, even if that's just one person he's talking to. Overall sad story.
the Last Church is the only story that allows me to relate to the Emperor. Basically it is what I live every day with my religious coworkers. Except I can't burn down the office at the end of the afternoon.

After their discussion of After Desh'ea and Scions of the Storm , I can not wait to hear Mira's thoughts on Betrayer. It's one of my favorite books and almost single handedly put Angron and Lorgar in the ranks of my favorite primarchs.
39:19 The Book of Lorgar was in False Gods. Kyril Syndermann was trying to translate it and accidentally summoned demons by reading a passage which Eufrati Keeler stopped with her faith (which she got ironically from the Lectitio Divinitatus). It's a nice hint of how the Word Bearers have turned from devoted worshippers of the Emperor as a God to worshippers of Chaos.

The Last Church is still one of my favorite wharhammer moments so far.
It is interesting seeing Mira encountering the Last Church. At the time it was written it very much felt they were going "The Emperor is not a good dude", and then later on felt they had overplayed it and started rolling it back a bit. My read of this story was always "The Emperor is exactly what he says he is criticising."
I just can't wait for Mira's thoughts on Master of Mankind, the book made me a full Emperor enjoyer (especially the scene where he smiles)
I understand Ian’s objections to the space wolves to killing the entire planet after one guy said no to joining the imperium. Then again, these are the space wolves were taking about. If prospero has taught us anything, the space wolves aren’t exactly the sharpest blade in the Imperium.
"Elves are still alright though!" "Weeeeeell.." *happy claps*

If you go off the old lore the Pariah gene that gives humanity Blanks was put into us by the Deceiver (C'Tan) back when we were tiny monkeys for "Just As Planned" reasons (Pariahs before they were ret-coned out of existence). I think it's implied from that that it's passed down through heredity. 3rd edition Necron codex as my "source"(I say very loosely, it's been 10+ years since I've read it) and it's probably not even canon anymore because of the 5th edition space Egyptian update.
I so look forward to these. Thanks for keeping going.
25:51 Imperium of Man: "Cleave means Cleave."
For the audiobook version of The Voice, Emma Gregory narrates it, and years later comes back and voices just the singular role of Jenetia Krole in Saturnine, while everyone else is by Jonathan Keeble. Found that kinda interesting, since otherwise Keeble voices the ENTIRE Siege of Terra. Made me want a lot more Krole or other Sisters!
I was excited about "The Last Church" when I first heard about it. Everything I've seen about it since has suggested it's the story of an annoying Reddit atheist having a 'debate' with someone who's faithful but not well-schooled in theology. Which is a common problem when sci-fi writers want to write about Big Philosophical Ideas, but don't have much grounding in philosophy or the humanities, as they do their best to sound Smart without actually knowing anything that actual experts talk about on these topics.
@Gallowglacht
27 күн бұрын
But literature, like all art, is also shaped by the audience. So it can be read as Wise Atheist Genius owns Dogmatic Moron. However, that isn't the only way to interpret it. You can read it as the impression you were given - Annoying Reddit Atheist Dooms Own Plans Because of Religious Blindspot. So, rather than the Emperor being omniscient perfect being - what if he is just an edgelord. A super powerful one, but just a 2 dimensional, overconfident edgelord. Well the stories all still work. The Imperial Truth leads the Luna Wolves blindly into conflict with the Interex - who might otherwise have saved the entire Imperium. Instead of humiliating Lorgar and turning the Word Bearers from fanatic loyalists into the instigators of the Heresy - maybe the Emperor should have sat down Lorgar and said, "look, buddy, there are Gods, but they are malevolent, and we need to protect humanity from them". Lorgar after all did overthrow a chaos cult on his homeworld and his Levictio Divinitatus formed the basis of the Imperial Faith that humanity now uses to defend against Chaos. So read and enjoy the story. See it as a paradox and a tragedy. If the Emperor really is perfect and all knowing - doesn't that make Lorgar's claim that he is a God in all but name true. And if he is not perfect, but merely hugely powerful - then that opens the door to him being wrong. Not about everything, but maybe in how he tackles religion. Maybe treat it as a metaphor. He tries to lead a mortal human to the truth using his greater wisdom. And the human turns around and walks into a burning building, just as he leads humanity in a great crusade, only for humans to turn around and burn it down. So the same characters, the same words, the same scenario tell different stories, depending on the readers viewpoint. If the Emperor is right, it is the tragic story of a hero trying to do right, and the person he is trying to save dooms themselves through ignorance. However, if the Emperor isn't the hero, it is the story of a delusional tyrant who dooms the weak and ignorant through his own arrogance.

I had this reaction particularly badly when I first read it. For context, it was 2008 or so, I was 14, one of the few "openly" Christian pupils in an all-boys grammar school, and the recent release of the Da Vinci Code had made mocking Christians with easy-access buzz-phrases all the rage (combine that with standard teenage "rebellious" impulse and the faux-intellectualism of a grammar school classroom...). So you can imagine how hard I bounced off Dawkins-in-Gold here.

Mira please do a video when this is all over, with all your collected descriptions of the emperor and how your views of him changes over the course of reading all the books… pllleeaaassseee. Would be awesome to see what happens
Always bowled over by the polished and professional presentation 😀
The emperor and Land talked about the nails and that although it may be possible for him to remove them, it was too late because they had already changed his body. But he did also forbid Angron from giving his own poor man's nails to the rest of the legion and sent the space wolves to try and put a stop to this and bring back the one's who had already had them implanted right?
Every Word Bearer should have a long slim mustache
Yep, Rick is Lindsay Priestly's husband :)
That is now my canon voice for the Emperor.
About The Last Church...I think of the Emperor in that story as just a younger, less mature version of himself. He's still in his "warlord" era and, as such, is perhaps a lot more arrogant and overconfident (at least externally) than he is later on. I think that the story foreshadows a couple of things. Just as the Emperor was the genesis of the man's religion, he becomes the genesis for the Imperial religion later on. Even more importantly, the story shows that the Emperor doesn't really "get" humans as he thinks that he can just walk up there and talk this dude out of his religion. At the end, even though he may be persuaded intellectually, he still goes back inside the church because it's as much a heart thing as a mind thing.
Mira did such a great job! This was thoroughly enjoyable, thank you!
Lots of things point to the Emperor waking up, but what if what's waking up in that shell of a body is actually Horus having clawed his way back from the beyond. He could live in secret as a dark emperor without anyone knowing. Then later the true emperor having elevated himself after taking in so much psychic energy, can manifest himself back to life with a new body, and we'll have the best of both terrible worlds that can go toe-to-toe.
@jackp492
27 күн бұрын
I always thought it would have been fitting for the emperor to have been destroyed on the vengeful spirit and they needed a vessel for the the throne so they used Horus in secret and shame, and ironically the imperium has been worshipping the Horus on the throne for the last 10,000 years, because that’s way more tragic, Horus wanted to stop his dad doing this, but then he destroyed him and ended up being the thing he was trying to stop happening, But I guess that didn’t happen in the books
