    Custodes size: I have always imagined them as someone hit enlarge 100% on the photocopier. They are big Humans. All in proportion to a a standard Human. Astarte's are portrayed as been hulking, musclebound with trunk like arms and legs etc. In essence, an Astartes has the classic Dwarf physique compared to a human. Shrink an Astartes and a Custodes to normal human size. The Custodes looks like normal Human. The Astartes looks ill proportioned and lumpen.

    I think Mike Lee pays homage to the novel Eaters of the dead. This novel starts with 2 chapters actually written by an Arabian traveler in the middle ages who comes across vikings and observes their rites. In the rest of the fictional novel he accompanies them as they're called to help a settlement who is under attack by a mysterious foe who comes down from the mountain and kidnaps their folk. This was also turned to a movie with Antonie Banderas called the 13th warrior.

    39:19 The Book of Lorgar was in False Gods. Kyril Syndermann was trying to translate it and accidentally summoned demons by reading a passage which Eufrati Keeler stopped with her faith (which she got ironically from the Lectitio Divinitatus). It's a nice hint of how the Word Bearers have turned from devoted worshippers of the Emperor as a God to worshippers of Chaos.

    If you go off the old lore the Pariah gene that gives humanity Blanks was put into us by the Deceiver (C'Tan) back when we were tiny monkeys for "Just As Planned" reasons (Pariahs before they were ret-coned out of existence). I think it's implied from that that it's passed down through heredity. 3rd edition Necron codex as my "source"(I say very loosely, it's been 10+ years since I've read it) and it's probably not even canon anymore because of the 5th edition space Egyptian update.

    I was excited about "The Last Church" when I first heard about it. Everything I've seen about it since has suggested it's the story of an annoying Reddit atheist having a 'debate' with someone who's faithful but not well-schooled in theology. Which is a common problem when sci-fi writers want to write about Big Philosophical Ideas, but don't have much grounding in philosophy or the humanities, as they do their best to sound Smart without actually knowing anything that actual experts talk about on these topics.

  • @Gallowglacht

    @Gallowglacht

    27 күн бұрын

    But literature, like all art, is also shaped by the audience. So it can be read as Wise Atheist Genius owns Dogmatic Moron. However, that isn't the only way to interpret it. You can read it as the impression you were given - Annoying Reddit Atheist Dooms Own Plans Because of Religious Blindspot. So, rather than the Emperor being omniscient perfect being - what if he is just an edgelord. A super powerful one, but just a 2 dimensional, overconfident edgelord. Well the stories all still work. The Imperial Truth leads the Luna Wolves blindly into conflict with the Interex - who might otherwise have saved the entire Imperium. Instead of humiliating Lorgar and turning the Word Bearers from fanatic loyalists into the instigators of the Heresy - maybe the Emperor should have sat down Lorgar and said, "look, buddy, there are Gods, but they are malevolent, and we need to protect humanity from them". Lorgar after all did overthrow a chaos cult on his homeworld and his Levictio Divinitatus formed the basis of the Imperial Faith that humanity now uses to defend against Chaos. So read and enjoy the story. See it as a paradox and a tragedy. If the Emperor really is perfect and all knowing - doesn't that make Lorgar's claim that he is a God in all but name true. And if he is not perfect, but merely hugely powerful - then that opens the door to him being wrong. Not about everything, but maybe in how he tackles religion. Maybe treat it as a metaphor. He tries to lead a mortal human to the truth using his greater wisdom. And the human turns around and walks into a burning building, just as he leads humanity in a great crusade, only for humans to turn around and burn it down. So the same characters, the same words, the same scenario tell different stories, depending on the readers viewpoint. If the Emperor is right, it is the tragic story of a hero trying to do right, and the person he is trying to save dooms themselves through ignorance. However, if the Emperor isn't the hero, it is the story of a delusional tyrant who dooms the weak and ignorant through his own arrogance.

    I had this reaction particularly badly when I first read it. For context, it was 2008 or so, I was 14, one of the few "openly" Christian pupils in an all-boys grammar school, and the recent release of the Da Vinci Code had made mocking Christians with easy-access buzz-phrases all the rage (combine that with standard teenage "rebellious" impulse and the faux-intellectualism of a grammar school classroom...). So you can imagine how hard I bounced off Dawkins-in-Gold here.

    About The Last Church...I think of the Emperor in that story as just a younger, less mature version of himself. He's still in his "warlord" era and, as such, is perhaps a lot more arrogant and overconfident (at least externally) than he is later on. I think that the story foreshadows a couple of things. Just as the Emperor was the genesis of the man's religion, he becomes the genesis for the Imperial religion later on. Even more importantly, the story shows that the Emperor doesn't really "get" humans as he thinks that he can just walk up there and talk this dude out of his religion. At the end, even though he may be persuaded intellectually, he still goes back inside the church because it's as much a heart thing as a mind thing.

    Lots of things point to the Emperor waking up, but what if what's waking up in that shell of a body is actually Horus having clawed his way back from the beyond. He could live in secret as a dark emperor without anyone knowing. Then later the true emperor having elevated himself after taking in so much psychic energy, can manifest himself back to life with a new body, and we'll have the best of both terrible worlds that can go toe-to-toe.

    I always thought it would have been fitting for the emperor to have been destroyed on the vengeful spirit and they needed a vessel for the the throne so they used Horus in secret and shame, and ironically the imperium has been worshipping the Horus on the throne for the last 10,000 years, because that’s way more tragic, Horus wanted to stop his dad doing this, but then he destroyed him and ended up being the thing he was trying to stop happening, But I guess that didn’t happen in the books

    I would like to watch the video veryvery much, but because of this series I started reading Horus Heresy and I'm currently only up to Flight of the Eisenstein. So I've come to leave a like & this comment and I'll come back after I've finished book 10!

    I like the way 'the end and the death' is foreshadowed the very first time that the Astartes encounter a demon (when they hear Samus over their vox and decide to ignore it)

Can you tell me where to buy or order books that are hard to find like flight of the eisenstein, descent of angels etc.. I'm from Italy

    They don't keep every single book in physical print all the time. If you want physical books the best bet is either Black Library or failing that, eBay. Pretty much everything ever printed is available as ePub from Black Library though

    @@ArbitorIan I guess ebook may be the logical way to go. Although seeing physical books lined well and orderly in the house still holds it's charm. 1 guy on ebay is selling descent of angels for more than a hundred euros.
