It's a lovely coming of age tale about a young man with many brothers, who realises his dad is a bit of a git.

My mate got me into 40k reading with horus heresy. I started slowly so I could take it all in. He would ask if I got the the whisperhead mountains yet, once I got there, shit got real quickly. Great book
"Is Ciaphas Cain a space marine?" "He's just a normal man. Just an innocent man."
29:00 the interex remind me of the Culture (from Iain M Banks’ books) a bit, just without the AI. They’re peaceful and resources seem plentiful, they embrace all species etc. And there’s a gun called an Interex Mauler that Bequin finds in Penitent! 😮
I Love Tarik Torgaddon. also I feel the giddiness of Mira is a precious gift!
I was there the day Horus drove 35 in a school zone.

Kryten is just trying to apply logic to an insane world and getting increasingly frustrated by it... Does that make him Iron Warriors? Lister does whatever he wants and rides a space bike, either Space Wolves or White Scars. The Cat I have no idea. But, I mean, the other ones did start a cult based on the colour of hats...

“People need ritual” Occupational Therapy has entered the chat
there is a conversation between Dorn and loken thats also really good in setting the stage of what loken's role needs to be and how his character will develop over the next 4 books and the widder heresy. almost how Dorn thought Loken would keep Horus on the straight and narrow and how he really really doesnt

Lokan's problem with the Lodge wasn't about the rank structure being subverted but about the secrecy. Of course the secrecy wouldn't be needed if what they stated the lodge was about was true but of course we find out that there was in fact a sinister reason for the lodges.
Really loved this discussion and overview of the book, I for one will not be upset if you both cover all of Horus Heresy, can't wait for the next one!
I'm a bit late to the party with these videos, that's the first of the series I've watched. Just wanted to say how bloody lovely it was listening to you two chat!
On the topic of Easter eggs, I remember Orfeo culzean from revener series had couple of Kinebrach artifacts on his collection. And also I know that horus heresy series is bit difficult to navigate (not to mention the sheer amount of books!), but I love to see mira continueing the series to the end.
This book was an Intro to 40K for me, showing Horus during The Great Crusade before his fall to Chaos!
I want to see Mira's reaction when she gets to Fulgrim. I'm predicting a thousand yard stare when recounting the opera scene.

It’s really amazing to realize that Mira has NO experience with the Horus Heresy setting, and getting to hear her “first time reader” thoughts on Horus Rising is wonderful. This was all of us at one point or another.
@N0TYALC
Жыл бұрын
I don’t think this was many of us. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought most people got into the series with a vague notion of how things played out. Her perspective as someone who didn’t even know that Horus got corrupted by Chaos or that Euphrati will end up as an imperial saint is very rare if my assumptions are correct. Hell, the opening line of “I was there when Horus killed the emperor” clearly didn’t fake her out in quite the way the author was intended. When we heard that, we thought “oh, this is a chaos Astartes reminiscing about the siege of terra.” She probably thought “Oh, so Horus is the one who killed the Emperor? Who’s Horus?”
Thank you both! Horus Rising has a lot of amazing themes not only placed for Warhammer. It has complicated situations, giving characters dangerous decisions. Definitely worth a read. Thank you both for your insight. Have a glorious day everyone! Thanks for the vid.
I thought, I saw Mira just do this interview with the author Dan Abnett. Great interview!
I had a friend get into the IP by reading the heresy first. He was complaining about not having any hobbies one day, and I suggested this little book to him called Horus Rising. He's hooked and like 12 books deep.

I was just coming back to rewatch some of your book discussions and found you uploaded a new one! I love these.
As a tiny kid my first Action Man was called Horace. He hung out with Roger and John and had adventures. He was an astronaut, then just wore a lot of wooly jumpers, took up climbing before all three got very paramilitary with guns, tanks and jeeps and shit.... Horace rising....
I brought a copy of this book over the weekend! Just finished chapter one. It's my first warhammer book and it reminds be of a David gemmell novel.
You guys are fabulous. Keep up the good work! Mira, you're right. Brazil is totally a 40k movie.
The Horace Heresy would have a very different vibe.
Extra comment: the discussion and commentary on how the novels led to the game and how people converted all the things, and how Mira got super excited - all of that is why I love this setting, and the hobby, and I’m gonna go and build some more Alpha Legion now.
AUTOLIKE for the reference to Samuraï Pizza Cats !!!! That caught me off-guard, I totally didn't expect that ! And of course, the Warhammer 40K setting as a whole, the Horus Heresy period in particular and a book by Dan Abnett as the cherry on top ! ;)
"YYYYYYYYYAAAAYY!" Is my articulate and insightful imput.... I'm in my happy place now :)
I ordered it just for a several hours ago and It's going to arrive me in two days. It'll be my very first Warhammer 40K (30K maybe) book. Entered the universe just two weeks ago and even my limited knowledge, It's one of my favorite fantastic universes so far with ASOIAF and Mistborn. I am really, really excited to read the book that I have wanted for a long time. But well, book is English. None of 40K books translated to my language. So It's going to be little hard to read it for me. And a good way to improve my English :D GOOD READING TO EVERYONE! STAY WITH EMPEROR!!
That was definitely Samurai Pizza Cats
Teeny tiny titan fight... yup. That shall be the new official name for it.
one of the interesting things about The Old Lore(talking mid to late 90s before the HH ccg and artbooks), is that half of the Traitor-Primarchs(back then there were only four; I dont even remember hearing anything about the word-bearers back then, and I dont think the Night Lords were really fleshed out until the new Chaos Terminator release in, I think?, 98), were presented as bscl tragic figures? Like: Magnus's "Fall" was literally just Russ using the Heresy as an opportunity to settle old grudges by attacking Prospero and Tzeentch being like "I know you hate me, but you're an awesome wizard and I'll save you and your legion if you work for me." and Mortarion's was literally his legion getting trapped in the warp on the way to save Terra and ravaged by a terrible plague until he switched sides. Tied to this: Khorne had this weird Honor thing back then that occasionally made him kinda neutrally? I suspect Krom from the Conan mythos might have been part of his inspiration(spcl given the magic-hatred).
lovely little easter egg, with the interex and gaunt ghost. With the laser firing crossbows. I asked Dan Abnett this one and he confirmed the both stories were in the same part of the galaxy. He also said about the Sanguinary Worlds was also a contextion between the two books but I haven;t been able to fully understand that one (unless it is conntected to the planet murder and the fact the blood angels were in the area) Obviously Tanit (40k Tanith) was a Carthagian Moon Goddess, with Carthage being an Empire destroyed by the Romans with their Legions.
Book club is always fun, but this was especially good. Cheers!
Teeny Tiny Titan Tussles! These reviews are so much fun. Oaths of Moment = Grim Dark Fetch Quests
I'd love it if, somewhere out among the stars on the galaxy's edge, there was an 'Interrex secundus' - maybe a colony of them that stayed under the radar and slowly built themselves up - so we might have them as a playable faction. I wondered if a sneaky sideways way to get that might be to kitbash some Interrex models and have them a Tau irregulars? I don't know much about the tau, so I'm not sure if that would work, but it'd be cool if it would...
I will definitely be checking out Mira's channel too

This was an amazing gateway book for me when I came back to warhammer in 2019 after a 15 year absence. Purely for it's amazing writing and reader friendly plot, I will always keep my copy of it. Tying in 1st place as my favourite HH book with Fulgrim, because the fall of the Emperor's Children is likewise so epic and darkly enjoyable.

Great video again guys. What I would add is that the opening 3 books of Horus Heresy were meant to read like a trilogy setting up the main setting. Then the original plan was to write various books set during the heresy and not really progress the story. But after a few years - fans were clamouring for them to pull things together, progress the story and lead us to the final siege and conclusion.
I feel like Iain and I are the only people who got the samurai pizza cat reference
Love these book chats, they are great.
Woah woah woah. Kryten is an ultramarine. Rimmer’s a World Eater. Cat’s with the Emperor’s Children, obviously, and Holly’s a 40k era machine spirit. I’d argue that Lister’s maybe Space Wolves because he has a well deserved, deliberately cultivated, reputation for being slovenly and undisciplined, but at his core (at least as the seasons go on) he demonstrates a rock solid capability for what he’s doing.

I don’t disagree. My reasoning was his anger, his father issues, and his resentment of Kryten the Ultramarine being better at rules than him

I came to the horus heresy for big fightyboi marines, But i stayed for the story of kyril, mersadie and Euprati. Great series, about to start fulcrim.
great video as always. Thanks for taking the time to share and discuss
haha, sorry for the green-screen comment - first thaught its just my eye. Good luck with the house - been there :D I know it might be an 'underdog' of sorts, but I would love you to discuss 'Double Eagle' by Mr Abnett - just something totally different to your regular 40k-novel (war released along the original Aeronautica Imperialis-release by forgeworld back in the day). Also Abnetts 'none-warhammer-sci-fi-novel' Embedded is woth a read!
The Horace pronunciation makes me think of him as Great Uncle Horus the Warmaster of Chaos and keen angler.
Finished this book myself yesterday and already started on False Gods! Absolutely hooked
Well this was fantastic! I can't wait to tune in for more of the series!!!
Funnily enough I just decided to listen to the audiobook for the first time and saw this video show up just after finishing it. As for my own thoughts: it's one of these books I'd absolutely say not to start with because the entire book runs on dramatic irony to feel like a classic tragedy. It works best if you know anything about the events of the horus heresy (which funnily enough you can just binge Ian's channel for) and enjoy the creeping weight of that approaching disaster. Hell, the book ends with a sentence that basically looks at the reader/listener and goes "well guess where we're going next. Oh, this will be a doozy!"
«Yey, Humans!» - Zealous inquisitor (allegedly)
I fully love this type of video. Read all the books, and I still enjoy what others bring up that i missed or didnt see in that way. Cannot wait until Galaxy in Flames, hint hint
@4:32 Horse Rising? 😂 Great synergy between you too..more of this please! 😘👍

Another great video guys. Well done thoroughly enjoyed it
An engaging discussion. Regarding games set during the Horus Heresy, remember that a number of boardgames exist as well. I'm thinking specifically of Horus Heresy by Fantasy Flight Games, and Betrayal at Calth as well as the Burning of Prospero by GW.
I've said it before, I think the final book will open with "I was there, I was there the day the Emporer sley Horus"
@drafezard7315
7 ай бұрын
Yep and rightly so, though it would be even more prefect if it was the final line imo.
I still think the best intro-to-Heresy game is Betrayal at Calth. It's not in print any more but you can still buy no-minis board/book/cards/tokens sets pretty cheaply since everyone bought multiple sets to get the minis, you can play it with any old space marines (my set has card standups!) and it's actually a really good low-time-investment no-setup-required boardgame-wargame. (Also I love the way everyone pronounces "Qruze" the same way despite it being a collection of too many consonants but I think I've heard three different pronunciations of "Iacton". I've always read it "Yack-ton", personally!)
It’s Lectio Divinitatus in this book, but they change it to Lectitio Divinitatus later!

When Lucius picked up the claw sword and started using it, because it was a great weapon. Eidelon started getting pissy with him for using it, great weapon or not because "IT IS XENOS!!!"
I think the point about people desiring religious ritual is really interesting. My wife is studying English law at the moment and its incredible how these supposedly secular institutions are steeped in religion, and I don't mean Christianity or any other specific religion, but the religion of the institution itself. It's like the removal of many Catholic religious rituals during the reformation and again during the enlightenment drove people to create their own rituals replace the things they had lost.
It’s a great read, it really hammers in the tragedy that before falling to Chaos, Horus was a pretty cool dude
Really want to see Mira read the White Scars novels in the Heresy
my new favourite series on youtube!
Ahhh.... so that's where all my sudden binging of Derry Girls pays off! 50:46
I'm pretty sure the Druchari see themselves as artists. So they do exist in 40K :D
This was my first Warhammer book I read and I love it. The philosophical component completely took me by surprised and made me think about especially religion, being a Christian and all. I don't know what's going to happen, I don't know the lore but I'm so intrigued with the characters and where the story goes.
I know it's a far flung thing but I'd love to see you both do Know No Fear, if only because I think Mira would love old pious Oll.

Don't forget the Horus Heresy Aeronautica book so three games in the Heresy Era now. Horace goes Skiing reference is an unexpected bonus too.
This video is great, really enjoyed watching 👍🏻
I've re-read Horus Rising this weekend, and as you said, this series has many moments where it sort of winks at the reader that already knows 40k, being like "get it? ... get it?". One that stuck out for me this time around was Loken musing about the future and the possible immortality of Astartes: "Loken tried to imagine the future, but the image would not form. Death would wipe them all from history. Not even the great First Captain Ezekyle Abaddon would survive forever. There would be a time when Abaddon no longer waged bloody war across the territories of humanity. Loken sighed. That would be a sad day indeed. Men would cry out for Abaddon’s return, but he would never come." ... oh Loken, you sweet summer child, if only you knew...
I used to listen to the podcast After Ullanor and read along as they went. Sadly they stopped atNemsis. I hope you keep this up all the way and ill be able to read along with you.
