Horton, MacArthur, and Sproul: Questions and Answers #1

Michael Horton, John MacArthur, and R.C. Sproul answer questions about the church.
Introduction (0:00)
Questions:
00:38 Will Big Ben be the quarterback for the Steelers this year, and can they win without him?
01:28 How do you see assurance of salvation in light of Calvin saying "all Christians doubt" and view of the ordo salutis?
04:46 Abraham is going to slay his son. How is that a good thing?
10:14 If Samson was never to touch a dead body, how come he killed a thousand men with the jaw bone of a donkey?
12:22 Comment on the concept of seeker-sensitive, who seeks whom in the process of salvation, and how does American contemporary evangelicalism get it right or wrong?
15:57 You mentioned the names of some well-known persons in our society that were born and raised evangelical, fundamentalist homes and now don’t believe in God. What are the reasons this happens and why does it happen so often?
23:43 Why hasn't anything been said about the spiritual formation movement?
28:11 Millions are dying apart from Christ and we must therefore urgently reach them, but doesn’t this conflict with John 6?
31:59 Conservative Bible-teaching churches taking the good from secular movements without compromising the message. How does that work?
39:19 Can God regret and wish?
45:51 If God has a general love for all people, when does God start hating people?
51:26 When is it okay and/or necessary to leave a church?
55:38 How does Matthew 17.20 and John 14.13 fit into prosperity Christianity?

It makes me sad I didnt come to faith until after RC passed and will never get a chance to hear him preach live. But, I will hear him praise God in Heaven. I cannot wait to bow at the feet of Christ with these great men of God. The ones that are his humble servants.

I left the church I was going too. For over a year there was two fast songs, two slow songs and a ten or fifteen minute sermon on love and a three line sinners prayer, clap your hands your now in the family of God. There was never a sermon on repentance, correction, conviction, discipline, or even preaching about hell, they drank coffee, listened to some comedian, or watch a movie and eat popcorn and drink coke. It was just a dead message. People came in on their way to hell and left thinking they were going to heaven but their final destination was still hell. The pastor and his wife were very nice people and I really liked them but I couldn't sit under that preaching anymore. I was getting dry spiritually and needed more.

I understand completely what pastor John explained about assurance. My 33 year old (Christian) son ended his life on July 3rd, 2020. I was immediately lifted up to a supernatural place of peace and greater trust in Jesus. I can't explain it. It's just the peace of God that passes all understanding that keeps our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. He assures me in his faithfulness to me. Don't get me wrong we are still grieving deeply. But we are experiencing such precious sweet peace.

If I know these men and their teaching, it follows that I am well aware of the many Godly church fathers. If you know anything about this group, you will also know their theology and practice is very much derived from much that the Fathers taught. Even the fathers were still, only men. In your haste to react you have missed the rather obvious connection between the two groups - they were both groups of men that fought, and still fight for the truth of the Gospel to be brought forth. The only difference between the current group is that by the grace of God, they have not been through the fires of persecution and or martyrdom, - but you take this as a foolish reason to dismiss their contribution to the truth. Martyrdom is not a reason to believe anyone - there are muslims who 'martyr' themselves or get martyred on a regular basis. Truth, is the decider. This is all these men are defending. Catholic/Romish much..??

This was done seven years ago but so many are just hearing the message today and it answers prayers about how can I share the gospel when I'm not persuasive, I don't have the ability or knowledge of these men. Sow the seed. Just share the gospel and then leave it to God. It will grow where it is meant to grow. Just share the good news. God does the rest.

Three of my very favorite contemporary Theologians sitting on the same stage; that to me is the essence of happiness for me! Addressing my thoughts about each of them individually I must begin with Dr. MacArthur. He has to be the most knowledgeable one overall, with RC running a close second. His total recall of Scripture is phenomenal, and how he so easily fits this knowledge so quickly to each and every question is fascinating. I have read, over the past 26 years, all of Dr. MacArthur's Commentaries and they have been a great influence on me. I attempt to watch the bulk of his video sermons. Because I feel so entrenched with his theology, I have purchased numerous "MacArthur Study Bibles" for my family and friends. He is an! unwavering rock of Christianity! Dr. Sproul seems to possess a more philosophical approach since the background he brings to the table is Theological Philosophy (if that is an accepted definition). The first Doctrinal Christian Book I read after my conversion was "The Holiness of God"; and it has always been foremost in my mind, especially when he describes being 'called' at the midnight hour from his Dorm to the College Chapel! On a personal front, he reveals a more jovial character in his sermons than does MacArthur. Both are absolutely superb in their understanding and proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! I must admit that I also possess a dozen or so Commentaries by Dr. Sproul and thoroughly enjoy his style. His untimely death was a very difficult time for me! Dr. Michael Horton is a special stalwart figure for Reformation Theology (not that the other two are not), but the several books I have read by him are more lent to the Reformed Theology teaching even though I certainly recognize that trait in the other two above. Dr. Horton certainly is much younger than both of the above gentlemen, but in his relatively short time on the circuit possesses a wonderful appreciation of the Reformed Faith and brings that out in his lectures/sermons! Having said all that, I enjoy these three men to the utmost both for their knowledge of the Gospel and their ability to bring it to the pulpit and successfully convey the Gospel message to all who have "ears to hear"! Blessings to all, D.O'D. - B.A., Th.M.

I would like people to know me as someone who knows Jesus! I'm with you on the uselessness of titles. Even Paul said "Greet the brethren by name." I hate when people call each other sister or brother at church, or address leaders by their titles. I think the apostles would have cringed at that. Their titles are what they do, it doesn't define who they are. Maybe I take it too far, idk.

I'm very fortunate to hear from the likes of these men of God...Here, in India most people are sucked into evangelical doctrine (signs, miracles, healings, etc.) and prosperity/word of faith/NAR preaching doctrine have a vice like grip In most part of the South East Asian countries especially India and Nepal...I have just recently been listening to RC Sproul, MacArthur and many others and just have come to know about the Reformation, Trinity, Solas, penal substitution, etc., and I just blown away as to how accurate and clear the Bible really is...

You know what eliminates doubt and strengthens faith? Witnessing! What an honor that He uses us to share the gospel. Allowing us to watch the Holy Spirit justify a person right before our eyes. I’ll tell you, when God directs you to a person, and you obediently share, then the person understands and prays with you… you have no “doubts” at all.

How in the world could Pastor John do so much without Divine Faith!! When “bad” things happen to me (e.g., breakdowns of “stuff”) I too start praising God for removing the lesser to make room for the greater. However, breakdowns in relationships and my own mental health are still being tested and I’m still freaking out, at least temporarily. But I know 100 💯 for certain that GOD is with me and He’s planning something special and spectacular for me and all I love. So love is really above ☝️ all, shielding me from everything evil and that’s enough for now. ❤️

It is May 2023. I discovered R C in 1971-72 and never let a week go by but I listened to his cassette tapes, began reading his materials...and living in Wisconsin, he then in PA, I never had means to see him live or have opportunity to attend/or join St. Andrews when many years later, late 1990's he was Pastor at the newly built Reformed church in Fl. I felt badly when he died in 2018(?) and even now-me at 79, disabled and many of the fine preachers that were at all the great conferences...that I see, truly almost every day...well, I pray all new men coming to replace all our fine old sound, solid preachers will be as fine as these men. I miss R C badly...he and Martyn Lloyd-ones were the TWO greatest preachers in 220th century.

I am about to say something that may enrage many. The "Church" is not needed for salvation, but the Body of Christ is. That being said those large beautiful buildings that we all as Christians gather in, are essentially and most especially in the "Churches" of today, are Christian Social Clubs. Now with that being established. Docternal Statements are an absolute must for "Churches", and are imbasilic for the Body of Christ. - (If you can wrap your mind around that one, your on the right track in my book) Church Membership and Membership Classes along with a Membership Oath and Contract, again are an absolute must for "Churches", and are imbasilic for the Body of Christ. IF the above statement doesnt apply to you or your Church, please dont make your fingers tired with a response. =D

That’ll happen as our journey continues. The moment we think we have God figured out (aka the moment we manage to put God into the little box that we have created for Him), he laughs(lovingly) in our face and throws us a curveball to turn our world upside down and break that box wide open. Ask me how I know this 😄

I love both of these men. There preaching is sound. BUT why does our entire country feel ok calling Sunday the Sabbath? Why do we not just go back to Saturday. PS I am not a seventh day adventist. This is a real problem for me with the modern church. It's not that we worship on Sunday necessarily, but more that we declare Sunday to be the Lord's day and refer to it as the Sabbath.
