Horses that wont pick up a certain lead

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I talk about horses that won't pick up a certain lead. I don't have time here to show you how to fix the problem, but I do show you a common mistake that causes it to happen.

I have been struggling with this for the passed few months where it hadn't been a problem before. My horse would not pick up the right lead no matter what I did. I knew it had to be me because she used to do it fine. I finally decided I'd either take a few lessons again but before I'd give it one last shot and I decided to do some research and well I came upon this video. I thought I made sense and went to the barn directly after watching and instead of using my inside leg and moving my outside leg back, I simply just moved my outside leg back. She loped off perfectly on the right lead. I experimented some and have found I have accidentally trained like in the video to counter canter when I use my inside leg :0 so thank you SO much for posting this video. It has helped me identify my problem and I now know how to fix it!!! Keep up the good work.

I love u so much. I could never pick up my horses right lead, and neither could anyone else who I asked to try... after watching this video I totally understood. I tried your method and he picked up his right lead for the first time!! I LOVE YOU

Very interesting... it certainly makes me think very carefully about when I apply and release the aids. I accidentally taught my horse to stop instead of right canter -a green horse that would trot faster and faster to the point where I'd give up trying. So he learned right canter aid = stop. Managed to retrain him when I worked out what had happened !

Keep knocking em out Warwick. Great video as usual. The worst kind of horseman is one who stopped learning once he knew it all ;]

I have a 16 hand ex AQHA racehorse. He bobs his head transitioning from a walk to a canter. How do I make this hard for him so he learns not too? I think your training methods are the best I've ever heard/seen. Totally make sense. Thanks Warwick

WEll I live in wales, united kingdom, I have been doing ground flat work, hes a jumper so the importance of picking up the right lead in canter before and after obsactles is even more important, the reason he doesit is because he has a small scar on his right front leg from a road accident many years ago and hes sensitive on that leg, I train my dressage horse with applied leg pressure and he responds more than well and hes come a LONG way since I first had him, we working so im hopeful! thnkyou

As a kid I was always taught to do a ten metre circle before asking for a canter strike of as that gave your horse the correct bend and he woul select the correct lead by default

I having difficult with the right lead as well, but a little different. I use my inside leg and kiss to him to pick it up. When and if he does, he will drop his right shoulder and lean in. I’ve tried correcting him but keeping the inside rein right and keeping my led to him but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ve also gave him his head to pick it up and then try and correcting him. All of this is only when I can even get him to pick it up. And when he does get it he will change it almost immediately

I am going to try that. My mare has the same issue with that same lead. Next time i am out i am going to simply ask for the canter when she's balanced and not a particular lead.

The problem I have with my newest horse, my old riding school horse so hes had alot of complete beginners, kicking, and whipping, and pulling him to canter and trot etc, since I have now taken over his care with my other training dressage horse, I ve noticed he picks up the right lead for one stride of canter then completely back to the left lead and he doesnt do this again until I reasked for canter after trotting, any help??!?!?!?!!?

The horse I'm working with now doesn't take a left lead easily. He will take it with the correct cue that I have taught him. After working him to the left for a while I put him back on the right *mind you he wouldn't take a left lead right away to the left* yet when I asked for the canter he took a left lead going to the right. I was so shocked I couldn't even correct it because I just had to stop him and think about what he just did. So here is my question..How do you fix a backwards horse? *Literally*

My green ottb is starting to learn his right lead but will not get it with me anymore he’s gotten it with my trainer once once on the surcingle and once with me but lately he’s just not picking it up he just counter canters and counter canters and won’t pick it up! Do you have any tips for ottbs im not sure why this is so hard for me to teach him with my other green beans I’ve never had this hard of a time!

OK so you apply the pressure to the left leg and keep the leg on as you break down and retry the canter?

So when they don’t get the correct lead how do you get them to fix it and get the correct lead while not releasing pressure?

My horse has an old back injury that causes it to be harder for her to bend right and also makes picking up a right lead difficult. After she gets it and I can keep her in it for a little she starts to stretch better and slowly gets better and eventually she will even out. I was wondering if you might know anything that might help me loosen her up and make picking the lead up easier. I do work on being able to bend her and have tried stretches, and she has the vet's ok for being ridden, I am just hoping to be able to make her comfortable faster so she feels better.

WarwickSchiller Hi, I just realised that I had taught my horse to pick up the right canter lead from either left or right leg aids like what you said in this vdo ! However, after watching the vdo a few times,I finally got your point and was able to fix the problem of canter leads that I had struggled with for months! Thanks very much and Happy Easter :)

You an teach a horse anything. So I guess work from ground up and retrain left leg pressure to bring the haunches in.

You,re a funny dude... i really like you...but, ..if a horse doesn,t wan,t to pick up a lead, there is a reason !!!! you should know that. No matter what they do, there is a reason. This time my friend you ignore the reason completely do yo ? Try your " solution" with a primitive fiord horse and we,ll see how far you get. Get into their mind Warwick and you will find the roots.
