Horses Help Humans Be Real, Honest, and Present | Liz Letson | TEDxBemidji

“What is equine-assisted psychotherapy? Do horses need therapy? Or is it people?” Liz Letson takes the TEDxBemidji stage to talk about equine-assisted psychotherapy and the healing power of animals.

Owner/CEO of Eagle Vista Ranch & Wellness Center Liz Letson’s mission is to transform lives through the healing power of nature and horses by creating a space for people of all ages to build hope, trust, and purpose.

She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) specializing in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and has coauthored the "Human-Animal Interaction Scale," a mental health assessment tool that adds to the evidence-based research in the field of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Exploring how horses help humans heal is Liz Letson’s calling. In her work with equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning (EAP/L), Liz has witnessed the positive effects of utilizing animals in relationship building, healing, and therapy.
"Oh, you're the horse lady!" is a typical and welcome greeting Liz hears. But her experience is much more extensive than being a lifelong horse owner. Liz is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and the founder of Eagle Vista Ranch & Wellness Center (EVR), a private mental health practice where animals are part of the treatment team. Her practice helps individuals, families, and groups develop healthy skills for living and serves people who have suffered the effects of domestic violence, abuse, or neglect. As a pioneer in her field, Liz is developing an evidence base for EAP. She is also a co-author of the Human-Animal Interaction Scale (HAIS), a tool that measures people's interactions with horses.

Horses are powerful and amazing creatures. It doesn’t surprise me that they can be effective for counceling. This video definitely made me want to get a degree in equine assisted therapy.

I know from my own experience that horses can change your life. My dad made one decision that made my dreams come true. As a result, I wrote a book about what happened.

Ha! I taught life skills to people thru the use of my horses b4 I even knew what psychology was. I really enjoyed the rewards of what my horses taught me and my clients! Very Powerful information to learn about oneself! And then others! I wanted to go to school for sociology but I think I did without the school lol :) Today I’m looking to put together a passion camp but I don’t have the funds so I guess I’m gonna create a book instead… nice pitch btw ;)
