    As a spaniard I just have to say: Don‘t be scared to call what we do abuse. It just is. It‘s not a „different training method“ it‘s just plain abuse. Spain still has a long way to go in terms of animal rights and welfare. I‘m also on the lookout for my first ever horse and although PRE horses are beautiful I avoid them like the pest. It‘s not because of the horses, it‘s because most breeders of PREs use outdated and painful methods to make the horse submit. It‘s a sad reality and there‘s not a day that goes by that I don‘t think about how many animals are abused in this supposedly „developed and advanced“ country.

    As a Spanish rider myself, I can assure you that the metal noseband is NOT POPULAR in Spain. These nosebands may be used in the most traditional south of Spain. Most Spanish riders do not support these nosebands and use common ones. But overall I loved the video Erin there were some beautiful horses there.❤

    1. Looked a bit grumpy and off 2. Long mane but looks gaited, unbalanced canter 3. Nice face, ugly stubby neck, hard to bridle due to neck, Although when Erin rode him he did relax and come into a nicer frame. 4. Stunning, upright gaits and almost looks more Lusitano than PRE. Longer neck so looks overbridled, needs to be held together to get good control, as thats how he is used to being ridden. 5. Definitely the horse with the most dressage potential Number 4 or 5 would be my picks :)

    I had a pre-horse for 14 years (he passed away already two years ago) and I also noticed, that he had a "sensitive nose", propably due to training as a young stallion, but I was riding him for many years bridleless and especially nice he was in liberty. He was a professional show horse all those years, a perfect medieval war horse, and I also practised mounted archery with him for many years - and also in liberty. I have a perfect Friesian horse as a show horse, too, which has also made a 19 years long career as an actor, and a very talented Irish Cob, but my next horse is after all going to be pre again. Andalusian horses are the best and most noble horses I have ever ridden, and I have been riding for 49 years.

    I hate serretas, and I hate the phrase "any bit can be soft/hard in the right/wrong hands". There are bits that are inherently harmful, like the twisted wire and waterford mouthpieces that cause abrasion just with the horse moving its mouth aroumd, or gags, that send conflicting signals to the horse at the slightest use of the reins. Just because something is tradition, does not make it okay. Serreta's (metal and spiked ones at least) are barbaric in my opinion.

  • @crystalclear5684

    @crystalclear5684

    Yes!!! The serreta IS barbaric, and IS abusive to the most sensitive part of the animal's head. Regardless of tradition in some very sophisticated riding schools, there are some practices that should be abolished once and for good. The blatant pomposity and hubris of the use of the serreta is not just a Spanish thing, as others have used similar TORTURE devices, like chaining the feet of Tennessee Walkers.... humans are so stupid sometimes! 😥

  • @gabbyfinlayson8431

    agreed but waterfords are better than even a plain snaffle being that there is even pressure and it’s not pinching the tongue as easily and causing a small point of pressure in the roof of the mouth. i personally try to use rubber when possible but id rather use like a french link or lozenge before a snaffle.

  • @naevrys

    @naevrys

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@gabbyfinlayson8431 Snaffles aren’t mouthpieces, they’re cheek pieces (loose-ring, d-ring, eggbutt, full/half cheek, etc). A waterford is a type of mouthpiece, whether it be on a snaffle, gag, or curb bit, they are inherently harmful and inherently abrasive. They create many pressure points and tend to just collapse in the mouth, and have a much greater chance of pinching than any single or double jointed mouthpiece. If you’re riding properly, a single joint snaffle should not have a nutcracker effect, and it is nearly impossible to pinch the tongue in one, unless you’re literally pulling the reins towards the ground; in which case it is more likely that you’re squeezing the bars of the jaw rather than pinching the tongue.

    @@chevalierdelacalique9087 I used medieval because although the "modern" serreto noseband was created in the 16th century, there were very similar nosebands used as early as 8000 BCE. Probably not entirely accurate still, since serrato-like nosebands pre-date the medieval period. Also I didn't mention barbaric at all. Don't really feel like we can judge people when their actions were based on a lack of knowledge & understanding. People in the past were not being "abusive"( at least not intentionally), they didn't know any better. In this day & age we do, so it becomes abusive (intentionally).

Very willing to learn and brave about new things lol 16.2hh, which shows me that my Thoroughbred mare is not remotely in the 16hh+ range like we thought. As for the horses you looked through, the last two spoke to me the most in terms of conformation, movement, and temperament. Five though, is a winner. If it's most important that you find a kind, gentle horse, why not expand the search to include geldings? Not to suggest that stallions aren't capable of being kind but you can get a bit more of a predictable nature from a gelding. Just curious what the thought process here is, and whether you're looking for a stallion prospect or if a gelding would be just as suitable? If you are considering a stallion, what bloodlines are you after? Only PREs or other Spanish horses, too? If you're just after a pretty horse with a kind nature and the movement for serious dressage, there is a PRE breeder in Cali with double pearl and cream horses. Her stallion recently became a Breyer model. I can send you her contact info if you're interested. Best of luck on your horse search!

    I think the main reason there are mainly stallions is because in Spain mostly Stallions are trained and worked with and it isn’t custom to geld like it is in some other places. Mares are used for breeding and stallions are trained and sold. Different cultures do things differently. Also consider it this way, when buying a gelding you buy a genetic dead end- if you wanted to breed after a sporting career you could do that 🤷‍♀️.

Woman bought a fancy Spanish stallion and it was gorgeous but dangerous. Got kicked of the yard for his behaviour. They moved it to livery on a yard with a riding school who had to have it put down after it almost killed a groom. Turns out it had a brain tumour that caused it to behave violently!

    Half of those horses are trained with serratas nosebands, sadly is still very used here in Spain; im sorry you had to see that all of them had marks on their noses and they are all because of them. Im Spanish and I honestly dont consider this “culture” at all, for me it is disgusting to see such a harsh tool used on horses which, by the way, those nosebands do always harm the horses; there is no “good way” of using serratas and they are actually starting to be banned because some of us are really against them. It is sad because even though there are very good places in Spain where horses are treated like gods, there are still a lo of places where they are treated very badly. I am sorry you had to witness the marks on their noses caused by the abuse, I am glad that you are taking one of them because you will give him a much better life I am sure.

Horse 2 looked very confident with you and accepting, willing to please personality. Horse 4 was a rare color combo, Wow, flashy but needed 2 years more training, he wasn't confident with himself, very smart but need more training from a trainer that would be your fit. Hore 4 was amazing, mover, fit, focus on you/rider more along in training. Wished your strips were the right fit for you, you looked awesome riding him. His movement was stunning, very flowing, smooth. Notice the kind eye on him. Stunning riding horse. All the horses were W0W!! Thanks so much for this video and for showing us what is out there.

    I think the 2 and 5th horses looked best. But question is what you are searching for and who you clicked better with :) About sereta, I think you were unlucky in seeing it used too rough.From what I heard in Spain horses wellbeing is treated a little different then we are used to, so seeing horses with rubbed noses is a shock for other equestrians, but it is "normal" there. In good hands sereta is no worse then riding in hackamore or a snaffle or a double bridle, all of which have metal and also can harm horses (and have harmed, even in a top sport we have situations with blood rule eliminations). Most serettas have leather padding and are not much different then cavesson, they are good for groundwork. Question is in the rider. I think Matt Harnacke reaction was very similar to yours. It is a different culture. Good luck with finding your new horse!

    Both sereta’s and bits can be a problem. I don’t agree what so ever with sereta’s, there are most definitely better ways, people seem to forget that you can always soften a horses mouth, a metal nose band is not required especially because of how a horses skull and nasal passages are set up anatomically. That and around their nose/face, a horses epidermis is thinner than it would be everywhere else, and they already have an epidermis that’s similar in width to humans. Because they are bigger animals, they have more nerves, these are animals that can feel bugs landing on them through their fur. So a metal noseband is a definite no. And that goes for harsh bits aswell, chain bits, twisted, gag bits, spade bits are all far too harsh to be used in a horses mouth. Rotating shanks I’m on the fence about, as they are meant to be used in events like reining, or cattle cutting, or western pleasure where 99.9% of the event your reins are lose. Yet, people use these shanks in barrel racing. But both harsh bits and sereta’s aren’t great, people can say “in the right hands” all they want but unless your hands are lighter than a bug…

    I was born and live in Catalonia. I've been riding for many years and I can assure you you're not wrong when pointing out that it looks like a circus performance. It's very cultural depending on whether you are in Spain. The horse becomes a utilised object. During traditional Spanish festivities in the South, horses pull carts from dawn till dusk to the point of exhaustion, I've seen horses collapse in the summer heat. They are many times exploited. It's really sad and unfortunate. It's not about horsemanship anymore, it's more about business and money making. I wish you could have travelled to other regions of Spain where animals are treated differently. Many hugs xx

    From closely studying how you good English youtube ladies have humanely developed your horses, I have to say that the body language of all 5 Spanish equines, when they were around their trainers, was abnormal to say the least. Almost as if they were purposely prancing the tricks, (which the cruel inhumane tool implementing handlers were forcing them to uncomfortably display), in an off kilter way to reflect the mentality of their owners/grooms mistreatment who are clearly abusing the beautiful creatures as evidenced with the serated bridals. - This is why all 5 horses were keen to go home with you - the old equine dude would far rather retire at home stabled with you Erin, though, with any cruel/shady barn practices, patronizing them can perpetuate the abuse. I'd wish to get all 5 horses out of there if it were possible. On a final note, the lesser mental ideal of forceful/cruel training indoctrinations that is terrifyingly ingrained in the altered mindsets of every aspect of some cultures is the very reason why countries that support unethical characteristics will never hold sway or be entrusted in making important decisions sensitive to world stage effects in forums such as the United Nations. You'll get the right horse that will only mature positively with you and your other nice stable mates. -

    I actually live in Spain and own Spanish dressage stallions which I train with Juan Manuel Muñoz‘ help. Unfortunately, all these horses were totally lacking quality. Yes, the last horse was ridden better and had a good canter, but his front legs weren’t straight and the overall potential wasn’t there. It’s difficult, when you come to Spain as an “outsider”, as people will try to sell you horses that aren’t worth half of the price they’re asking. There’s a good breeder in Malaga, where I recently bought a young stallion and he’s got older and more advanced horses too. You wouldn’t find any Serretas over there either, and pretty much all the horses have x-rays already. The breeder is called Sebastian Brenes and he’s in Puerto De la Torre / Malaga. You can find his contact details online

I can see how happy you are on him, and sure, number 5 has more dressage potential, but as you said earlier in the video your not looking for a flashy, dressage show horse, but a liberty, fun horse with a sweet nature. also, horse number 5 looked a little bit short for you (if you ever want to ride him) and he seemed a little bit spooky with his head tosses and maybe a little bit worse off of the camera. pr maybe it was because the stirrups were too long and that's why he looked short. idk.

    I loved number 2, he looked a real fairytale horse. I also love number 5 as well. Cannot wait to see which one you chose if any. You are also mentioning the issues that Matt Harnacke faced when he was looking for his PRE Stallion.

    So interesting to watch. I know several people who have gone to Spain to see horses and it was quite heartbreaking the way a few of the horses were kept and treated. The broker seemed to think it was quite natural there, but not how we would treat them..Overall I thought horses no 5. He had a small halter looked relaxed. Ears forward when you greeted him. Nice paces. I wonder which one you thought. 🤔

    Hi, I'm Spanish and those "tortures" that they put on the horses number 4 on the nose they use it in some places to make the horse respond to the rider. It is a very hated "tradition" but unfortunately some places continue to do it. I recommend you not going to those places or buy them a horse since they are really mistreating it. Thank you

    The last horse with the compelling canter is my favorite. You also looked very natural on him. 💜

    Hey Erin! Just a heads up that if you buy a horse in Spain (I bought 2 there myself), you have to be extremely careful with paid-off veterinarians. They will do anything to make you buy the horse ( even falsify the rx). Good luck finding another amazing horse!

    I bought an unseen “gelding” from spain..the vet told me he was a gelding and had been for a long time..what a lie, he had been a gelding for 2 weeks and I had to send him back🙃
