Horse Seizure /Equine Epilepsy/ Neurological Episodes / Fits /Convulsions - Case Study for Awareness

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This mare has been seen to have seizures like in this video on and off the past 15 years she is 27 years old now. She is an Irish draught cross part bred Thoroughbred. She has likely been misdiagnosed in the past as she also has EPSM and it seemed to relate to muscle spasms/trapped nerve type of thing! But we now know it’s equine seizures /epilepsy.
It’s tricky to record them as they happen at random times but a brief description:
Twitching starts in her face and she turns her neck in, the tremors go through her body, she looses coordination, in the last year she now falls over, then gets up canters in circles or sometimes in straight lines depending on where she is in the field, the twitching stops and she goes back to grazing over a 5/10 minute period.
Sharing her symptoms to raise awareness and help other owners reach a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Little update since I posted the video: the seizures got more frequent so managed to get a more conclusive diagnosis of epilepsy. She has been on phenobarbitone tablets (Epiphen) for the past 3 months and that has stopped the seizures so far 😀
In response to the nasty comments - I can't control who is shown the video so I apologies if its popped up in your feed randomly and caused alarm or confusion. However, by sharing the video on various platforms I have been able to reach horse owners all over the world who are going though this to get a diagnosis and treatment. Seizures in horses are very rare so there are little resources, support or success stories out there so we often have to resort to searching for other cases and information online. So I am sharing it to raise awareness as there is very little out there about equine seizures especially in the UK/Europe.
Also, sadly there is nothing I could do to help my horse in the moments that this is happening because she cannot control her movement and at over half a tonne it is dangerous and futile to intervene! When she comes out of it I give anti inflammatories, aftercare a love. I recorded the episode so I could show the evidence to veterinary professionals to aid diagnosis because it's the only way I could show them what was happening.
Thank you for the supportive comments and kind words. Feel free to reach out to me if you are going through something similar with your horse I am happy to talk in more detail about my experience and how I managed my horse with this condition for over 15 years so she could live a happy life (of course do get veterinary advice in the first instance).

Pinning the description so it’s more easy to read and understand the story: Firstly, this video has reached a lot of people, I am so glad we are raising awareness and thank you so much for taking the time to comment I really appreciate it❤ Here is all the information on what happened. This mare has been seen to have seizures like in this video (although for many years much more mild than this one) on and off the past 15 years she is 27 years old now. She is a British Sports Horse (Irish draught cross part bred Thoroughbred). She has likely been misdiagnosed in the past as she also has EPSM and it seemed to relate to muscle spasms/trapped nerve type of thing! But we now know it’s equine seizures /epilepsy. It’s tricky to record them as they happen at random times but a brief description: Twitching starts in her face and she turns her neck in, the tremors go through her body, she looses coordination, in the last year she now falls over, then gets up canters in circles or sometimes in straight lines depending on where she is in the field, the twitching stops and she goes back to grazing over a 5/10 minute period. Also, sadly there is nothing I could do to help my horse in the moments that this is happening because she cannot control her movement and at over half a tonne it is dangerous and futile to intervene! When she comes out of it I give anti inflammatories, aftercare and love. Also for those asking the bands on her front legs are magnetic to help with arthritis pain. And the dots on her fur are shavings (bedding) , she had free access to a field shelter so when she lies down it sticks to her fur. She was also regular wormed/worm count tested and, as we are in the UK, vaccinated routinely for flu/tetanus (this is not a reaction to worms/tetanus as some people have asked)

Thank you SO Much for posting this! While it is a shock to see it happening, if you're a pet owner who's never experienced an animal seizing... it takes your breath away the first time, then your brain kicks in to try and do whatever you can to help comfort them...usually with medications and some times therapy they are fine. Videos like this are just as needed as videos of children or grown up having a seizure... its not unheard of, it's not something you know will happen until it does... at least people having seen videos like these know they are not alone, they know there's help for their loved one, be it animal or human... Thank you again for sharing what must have been a very difficult thing to watch as it evolved into a full on seizure... I'm so sorry

I had a neighbor who had a beautiful horse. She was fine until my neighbor tried to ride her. Then she'd pass out so she tried just leading her horse while riding another horse and it would do the same thing. She came over and asked me what I thought could be wrong with the horse. Shame on me, I couldn't think of anything and this is exactly what was wrong with the horse. It was a drop dead beautiful animal. So wish my thinking cap had been on, I'd have suggested it to her.

I am going through that with my dog. He is on meds and I just received at home rescue meds that I shoot in his nose to help get it to stop. I am not sure how aware he is as his eyes do track with me and he does try to get into my arms when I try to grab my phone for a video to show the vet so I don't think they are grand mal. I do my best to try to comfort him an let him know I am there for him. Sometimes I have to hold him down because he moves quite a bit and I don't want him to hit his head. He is half my weight so it can be a struggle sometimes. I love him so much and I have found that with proper monitoring, it is still possible he can live a quality life. Videos like this are valuable for vets and for owners who are going through something similar. I wish the horse and owner the best and courage for when they go through these episodes. I wish you and your pup the best as well as it is tough to see an animal that you love go through that.

In a strange twist of fate, both of my pups have epilepsy. Optical compression helps. Lightly press your thumbs over their eyes. It seems to calm them quicker. Also I keep wet towels in the fridge to wrap around their necks as they tend to become over heated. And they recover faster after a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a squirt of honey on it. It's tough seeing this happen.

This is such a valuable lesson to both vets and horse owners on what this does to horses. I hate to see this but sometimes it is necessary to inform people what it looks like and for the vets the same so they get an answer faster. Thank you to this owner as I believe this had to be very hard to watch but it was good for all horses involved with this disability.

So frightening to watch! Poor horse looks in pain! Such a large animal, having a spell could be fatal! Honestly, if that was my horse I could not let him suffer! I had to put my horse down from a terminal suspensory tendon injury! It was the most devastating day of my life! Took me a long time, even still, having to choose euthanasia. My boy was suffering, in extreme pain, it was the most compassionate move for him! ❤

You did everything right and have done nothing wrong. Anyone that felt the need to post anything in the way of a nasty comment just needs to go be an armchair/KZread vet somewhere else, or just keep their opinions to themselves. For Christ sake some people wouldn't get common sense if it bit them right in the arse. That poor baby. I'm glad she's doing better. I had a cat that had grand mal seizures and he was dangerous to be around and he only weighed 10lbs!!! He would clamp onto anything or anyone within biting range and not let go until the seizing stopped. So terrifying. It made me feel so helpless. Turned out it was his flea collar that was poisoning him. There was a recall on that brand. He recovered eventually like it never happened. I'm glad your horse is doing well on the meds! Take care. ❤

Little update since I posted the video: the seizures got more frequent so managed to get a more conclusive diagnosis of epilepsy. She has been on phenobarbitone tablets (Epiphen) for the past 3 months and that has stopped the seizures so far 😀 In response to the nasty comments - By sharing the video on various platforms I have been able to help a number of horse owners who are going though this get a diagnosis. Seizures in horses are very rare so there are little resources, support or success stories out there. Please read the video description for the full story. There is nothing I could do to help my horse when this is happening - when she comes out of it I give anti inflammatories but it is dangerous and futile to intervene. I recorded the episode so I could show the evidence to veterinary professionals to aid diagnosis and now I am sharing it to raise awareness. Thank you for the supportive comments and I hope this reaches those going through something similar!

I'm a bit hear broken to see this and feel for you both. My husband was an epileptic diagnosed at, if memory serves, around 6 years old. He spent a year in a hospital while he was being diagnosed and finally finding a medication that worked. We're going back to the 60's. He was wise enough to tell me he was an epileptic when we started dating. My father also had epilepsy, so I understood what it entailed. My mother also had a poodle with epilepsy. It's not something many people have direct experience with. I praise your attempt s at getting it under control. As my husband aged, his medication had to be changed. By the time that happened epileptic drugs, at least for humans, had made a huge improvement. He had no seizures for the last 3 or 4 years of his life. I'm not sure but I've wondered if getting older makes seizures worsen and more difficult to control. Just know most people are just completely unfamiliar and don't understand what is happening. Best to you in your search to help your beautiful mare. I know you love her and are doing the best you can. It's hard on the caretaker too. God bless.

My dog Daisy was a pure breed black lab and she had lots of seizures. Got her when I was ten and they did not start till she was two years old. Anytime she would get them I would just come and sit next to her and calmly talk to her and once she settles just pet and talk to her. She had them a lot for the rest of her ten years. Now my dads new dog has seizures too but my dad started giving him some CBD pet stuff that you spray in the mouth and the amount of seizures have drastically declined.

So sorry you are going through this with your Beautiful Mare. I am glad that you got the correct diagnosis for her. Horse owners and pet owners that have seizures, pretty much knows what can set a seizure off, or can tell if one is coming by their behavior hours ahead. One of my daughter's horses, and ex race horse, had seizures after given an injection in his neck, by the trainer, when he was a race horse. The trainer was instructed by the owner to never give him an injection in his neck. The trainer did not listen and his head and neck swelled up to the point he couldn't eat or drink water barely. Then he did not call the Vet in or the owner. The next morning, he received a call from someone in the training barn that the Owner needed to get to the barn, the horse wasn't well. My daughter and the owner went and found Pauli the Thoroughbred bloody, and swollen. Apparently the trainer tried to get the horse out of stall but he would not move, so he beat him with a board. Someone saw and stopped it, then called the owner. The Vet was on his way. The owner went looking for the evil Trainer, He came into the barn, making excuses and said he just gave him a little shot. My daughter's Boss grabbed the trainer by his collar, pushed him out the door, socked him to the ground, and told him to never show his face in that barn, and that he would make sure he never had another job as a professional Horse Trainer again. The police were called, he was arrested, charged with Animal Cruelty, and something else. He was never to work on the Race Horse industry, again. Pauli in the few days after suffered several seizures. My daughter stayed in his stall with him for 2 nights. He finally came through. He had been given an injection in his Artery in his neck by that trainer, with a drug that Pauli was allergic too, and was told never to give him that. Pauli Retired that Weekend from racing at 6 years old. After winning over $300,000.00 My daughter Bought him from the owner, and he became a 4-H horse and Trail horse. He is 27 now and lives with a wonderful family in Colorado, and never had anymore seizures again. The Creep Trainer, well word went around to all the Race tracks in the Midwest, and Michigan where Pauli lived and raced, The Jockey Clubs, Owners. He was not in the business anymore.

It is important to know about this testimony, it is hard to watch the video, it is shocking but it is better to stop living in ignorance and be able to learn more about epilepsy in horses, it is good to know that she is improving, living for so many years suffering from this should not be easy and Special thanks to you for helping her.

As someone who has a cat with a form of epilepsy that started at 4 weeks of age… and is something we’ve been fighting her whole life… I wish more people would post videos of their fur babies having seizure to raise awareness, help educate/brainstorm ideas to help, and make others with the problem not feel so alone.

I have a friend with a Pomeranian that has had seizures since she was about 4 months old and of course they went through all of the blood work and the tests and everything they could possibly do. They had some luck with drugs but my friend found that if she took an ice pack and put it at the base of the dog's skull on the back of the neck that it would stop the seizure. I know it sounds fantastical but it certainly would be something to try. Good luck!

I’m so glad this was shared and you bring out the awareness to people. It was very sad to watch and I hate to think you being the owner seeing it over and over again, however; very happy that she is on medication that’s helping her. There will be a day that your beautiful mayor won’t come out of her seizure I say this Because I had a dog that was having seizures/epilepsy. As time went on, the medication was increased to the point that the medication wasn’t working anymore and she went into a full-blown seizure and we couldn’t bring her out of it. Blessings to you and your lovely horse, sending heartfelt sympathy and prayers..♥️

To anyone who might need help with pet seizures, something that helped my dog was rubbing honey into their gums twice a day before meals. Turns out low blood sugar can be a reason for seizures. Also make sure to feed your dog breakfast and dinner. Be careful to never put your hands near an animals face when they have a seizure, they could bite on accident and injure you on accident. The only thing you can do is put soft objects like pillows or blankets around them to keep from breaking limbs.
