I’m not a “horsey person” but I hate seeing a horse in a small space, just to please the owners needs rather than the horses.

Growing up, I knew an old man (87 yo) who kept his horses locked up in their stalls and only let them out into a small arena 1 horse at a time while their stall was being mucked. Then he'd go get them and bring them right back to their stall. I don't know why he didn't want to let them go so they could live a life in a pasture. It was heartbreaking.

Often fresh grass can cause colic. The old man might have had horses that easily colic. Some owners/trainers find it safer and easier to limit grazing or completely cut it out in favor of a controllable diet of hay and pellets.

​@@DAWGnROADIE I agree. If he did it year round then that's bad, but in spring with so much new grass it's definitely smart to 'break them in' to grass. Otherwise colic and laminitis happens etc

I think as long as you add useful things to your land and don't take away too much grazing area it's good. Trees make a nice shade, the burn pile bear spot makes a good place for them to roll etc. I think people just need to plan a little bit as to what they're going to add and what they're going to take away to a property. Your land is managed very well, your horses have everything they need. I wish more people thought it out or carefully.

Great insight. I eventually want to have land and horses, but want to do it right.

Mokie has got to be the cutest……I adore how he takes a ride with you. Great video by the way. Just moved to East Texas and need to learn as much possible how to care for my horses here. My horses miss their orchard hay, oat hay and alfalfa but oh well…..they are adapting well with the help of Standlee pellets and compressed hay. 🐴

Its true about cutting grass. The minute I cut the lawn, the birds come around looking for worms. Its much easier for them. Your neighbor's pasture looks horrible; I feel bad for their animals.

And the more weeds your neighbors have the harder it is to keep yours under control.

Always mow pastures. Weed seeds can get in their eyes. Some weeks are dangerous to horses.

My Dad said you needed 15 acres per animal (horse or cow) here in North Texas if you don’t want to be feeding them all the time. I think we have more rain and grass these days than when I was growing up, though. I think it really depends upon where you are in the world, though. In Ireland, where it’s green all the time, I’d imagine you can get away with less acreage per animal.

Omg I just LOVE Mokie he’s the best farm cat riding with dad in the golf cart out the pasture 🥰

In Washington.. we have blackberry vines. Those are basically thorny weeds with great tasting berries. They will grow several feet a month and take over a lot very quickly. Thanks Rick!

Damn I wish I had those. I love black raspberries (I think that's what you're referring to) they are my favorite fruit....but I don't get to eat them very often because I only have a couple plants....they haven't taken over my yard at all.

There are several varieties. Some of the more domesticated blackberries grow more like raspberries and have less greenery to producing canes.😁

OMGGG!! Mokie on the golf cart is absolutely hysterical!! Your land is beautiful and there's a LOT of people without common sense...unfortunately!! And the horse's OR any other animal they have suffer cuz they don't take that into consideration 😢

Most weeds can't survive being cut over and over, whereas grass will keep growing because essentially grass is wild grain (oats, barely ect) so it keeps trying to go to seed. buying the kubota was a great investment your pastures look great now no dried tops on grass , reduced weeds plus slashing the grass spreads the manure to assist fertilizing ,over time it will just keep getting better plus with your snacks you give the boys they are well fed and loved no matter what the keyboard experts say

I'm going through the fun thing of pasture management as well. Weed and feeds, seeds, herbicides, weed controls etc. are so much "fun." But they prefer the grass, and hay prices are skyrocketing, so it must be done.

I was taught 4 acres per horse. I'd still supplement that though. That being said I'd have to say you're good, of course, coupled with your knowledge and experience.

I am teaching her to go bitless and its working out. Sadly I bought the biggest horse I have ever seen and she's a draft too she is tall and twice the width- no one is daring to help us and we are "dangerous", my horse is an energetic one and she has learned that people here will run from her if she throws her head and I'm afraid the horse will one day just walk through them thinking it's okay. As a beginner for me it's really hard. So I am building my own place and mowing my new pasture today second time this summer. Depends a lot on climate also. In Kentucky one acre per horse of good grass is enough, but in Texas its different.

I was watching your older videos, when you where in CA. The owners of that white horse at the barn where you kept your horses, put out signs not to feed their horses, then used straw for bedding, so their horses ate the straw for food...smh. love your video's.

The pic of Buddy & Ransom is adorable. They are paying attention to Dad and they look all cuddly. Buddy coming up to you to say hi and following you. 'Mokey riding shotgun till he decided Dad was driving too crazy. Stewie hopping around in the background and evading the noisy golf cart. One big happy family!!

Same logic for wildlife management. After evaluation, they decide what the hunting will be to balance the capacity of the land. They spend time on this topic in Hunter Safety Training.

I remember reading about some weeds (at least up here in the northeast) that are not harmful to horses, and in fact can be beneficial as it serves them a more diverse diet. What do you think? Also for anybody who may be interested, turning goats out will also help with the any weed problems (as well as invasive species), but then you have to consider land for both your horses and goats.

That was a fun and educational ride along with you and mokie. I used to live on a 99 acre home when I was a kid and we had two pastures which I have no clue how many acres. A lot of the land outside those pastures wasn't grazable. I remember how short some of the grass was and that's because it was over grazed, makes sense. We had cows and didn't have lawnmowers because we would just take one of the girls and let her out in the yard.

I'm constantly working on my pastures cutting, weed mgt etc. I have 9 horses and 30 acres fenced into pastures that I rotate them in everyday. They don't eat everything so have to mow on a regular basis to keep weeds under control.

Hello all!

A lot of things are considered in regard to how much acre per horse. Eg environment, water source etc. We had 20 acres and went by 4 acres per horse AND rotation of paddocks to give the paddock rest.

I don't understand why some people buy these farmhouses with some of the land fenced off they're not going to get any animals just doing it for the look? I've seen quite a few people who don't bother to give their creatures a big enough fenced-off area to feed and wonder in as well don't probably upkeep it ...plus I've seen people keep one horse by his or hers lonesome

how come? just curious, if you are managing it well, whats wrong with some natural grasslands? the midwest was filled with nothing but "weeds" and unkempt land yet thousands of bison and dear and countless other species used to thrive on it.

Yeah it is more difficult to calculate acres needed for keeping lifestock and keeping them healthy. They say for fish tanks 1 gallon of water per inch of fish. That doesn't calculate decorations in the tank. So for a 10 gallon tank will hold 10 guppies that is without decorations. But when you add decorations you must take away fish to the population. This video's lesson sounds similar to what I learned about fish tanks.

@ Susan Gardiner So right about the fish tank thing! A friend of mine is an expert, having had tropical fish for years ++! He has wall stacked aquariums ( removed walls in his house & replaced them with such) many are huge, being custom made & the fish are absolutely stunning. In explaining, he said the same, they need space & some breeds are very aggressive & territorial. Angel fish in particular, one alpha male & a harem of females, put another male in & it goes downhill, they fight for dominance, much like a stallion & his mares! Crazy !

A coworker has miniature horses. They are not allowed out on the pasture for most of the year because they will over eat and founder. Is that from bad breeding, or just a flaw of the miniature horse? So his horses are on a dirt lot for most of the year.

I take my mini out walking, to eat some grass. Mostly he eats hay. He's on sawdust to stop him getting founder.

Rick if you got a few goats they only eat weeds they chew so fine the seeds pass through and don't regrow they will clean up the fence rows there feet are small so they aren't areat the soil and fertilize the soil the down side is next year you will have to rent them to your neighbor .

Dandelions are good in salads and doing wine with(.. a good estimate for dandelion wine's ABV ranges anywhere from 12% to 15%. ...) BUT their leaves grows flat on the soil and the roots are strong and deep (carrot-like) One has to *dig them out* before they kills the grass around 🐴

My area requires 4 acres for 1 ‘live stock’ & 1 acre per additional animal … that includes chickens - so to have 6 chickens I need 10 acres BUT that same 10 acres is deemed acceptable for 6 horses … this is our local government idiots at work 🤦🏻‍♀️

So so true about cutting pasture to keep weeds down. Last lesson barn I was at had unmaintained pastures that were just weeds up to your waist and a minefield of tractor ruts, trenches, and holes that horses had broken legs in or consumed toxic plants, coliced, and had to be euthanized. The grass that horses did have was either eaten down to dirt or not very nutritious. Of course they charged boarders a premium for "grass pastures" and didn't put their fancy show horses in them.

I've seen quite a few people well more than I like to see to either own horses or cattle who some degree allow the Patcher two-term muddy or loud to become overgrown cuz they cannot be bothered to upkeep the pasture out of laziness or it don't see the value of a keeping the pasture because they don't see as a bottle cost at food source for the animal it's very upsetting and heartbreaking. I've also seen people who don't give enough space for these animals and have them in small areas so you have all this land and you can't be bothered to make area bigger. So far the most heartbreaking one I seen it seem I think two or three cattle stuck in a small area behind and mini barns where they have very little room to move and it was all muddy andycine couple horses stuck in a cinderblock Barn which I don't even know of those horses are alive or the person got rid of them

You could sell your grass cuttings to organic vegetable and fruit gardeners presuming you don't spray it. Nowadays buying mulch, hay and straw and compost that hasn't been contaminated due to animals having eaten grass sprayed with broadleaf weed herbicide (which remains just as potent in the manure)is difficult at best . Grass cuttings can be used for all of those needs.

Yeah if you put a tree in your pasture. It'll removes grazing area but doesn't it some cover

1 horse needs at least 2 acreas for good grazing. Plus alternate pastures. Keep manure out of fields.

Is there a certain height you want to keep the grass when you mow? Does the height affect the sugar content in the grass?
