Horse Nutrition: What Equine Veterinarians Wish You Knew

Equine veterinarians have seen it all - the good, bad and ugly of horse feeds and feeding programs. Learn some of the most common mistakes and problems related to feeding your horses and how to prevent them.
Team Purina equine nutrition expert Kelly Vineyard, Ph.D., chats with an equine veterinarian about some of the most common mistakes horse owners make when feeding their horses. Watch this engaging 30-minute equine nutrition Q&A with equine veterinarian Dr. Erica Lacher, owner of Springhill Equine Veterinary Clinic in Newberry, Florida.
Dr. Lacher, co-host of the popular podcast Straight from the Horse Doctor’s Mouth, shares the most common problems she sees with feeding horses and offers great advice on how to correct them:
A fat horse is not a healthy horse - Learn how to accurately assess your horse’s body condition score and what changes you can make to your feeding program to help prevent dangerous conditions like laminitis.
True cost of cheaper horse feeds - Less-expensive horse feeds are often lower in calories and take more pounds per day to maintain your horse’s desired weight. Dr. Lacher recommends focusing on the recommended feeding rate and nutritional content, not the bag price.
Nutrition cannot fix everything - Nutrition is the basis of good health, but there are many situations where medical intervention is needed, including lameness, allergies, gastric ulcers and more. Dr. Lacher shares her nutritional recommendations as you work with your veterinarian to treat gastric health issues and soundness concerns.

My horse was stalled during winter and put on weight a 7 I cut his feed but kept his forage he gets two leaves of hay am and 1 hay 1 alfalfa I haven’t been able to exercise him much because I was having health issues plus heavy rain year so now outside trying to get some exercise I will be more diligent this week but increasing his exercise each week he is an easy keeper and this is his first year being a 7 I feed him strategy and a very small amount so I think he’s already lost about 25 pounds probably has 75-60 to lose
