Horror House (Action GT 1986) DFTA 82, Halloween Special!

Happy Halloween fellow attic explorers and we're looking at a creepy talking game that a few of you have been asking for a review for some time...HORROR HOUSE from Action GT. This game has a talking death head to it that has a miniature record player in it! Lots of monsters, lots of battles and...lots of frustration!
Hoping you all have a spooktacular Halloween! Myself? I'm off out with my local Ghostbusters chapter walking around and keeping the city safe ;)
Have fun and keep gaming!
Luke

Solid Review! I definitely agree on the frustrating parts! Haha. As for the differences between the two I do have a video coming out comparing the two, but the red death head only game with the Action GT one and the death head for Bandai one is way cleaner since I think Action GT one was just a mold of the original Bandai mold ultimately diminishing the details. There’s a few other small changes I’ll show, but it’s nothing too too major haha

The Dracula box art looks a lot like Christopher Lee, would make sense given the release date. Great review and a really interesting game. It look like it takes a long time to play through.

I used to have this game but in later years my mum threw it away along with my Treasure Hunt game. Both games I enjoyed immensely. Upset to hear how much it's worth now :-(

4:00 reminds me of how the cannon and battleship pieces in Monopoly were reused from a MUCH less successful game

Some English version of the game contains the priest pawns as opposed to the warriors with shields. There is a Japanese only Bandai horror game that uses those same exact priest pawns and that game is actually pretty cool (just wish it were in English too).

Interestingly enough, I had this as a kid and it was indeed the Euro version. BUT...the electronic centre piece (death head) was in fact red and not green like yours 🤔

I hear that one-eyed monster can be a real dick in the game. Great review Luke! That they have pictures of all the components on the back of the board is unique. It looks like a fun yet aggravating game. Perfect for the holiday!

Interesting mix of Japanese monsters obvioulsy left over from the Bandai version (Kensu, Kappa, etc) and Western Monsters which seem taken straight from Hammer Horror from their design (Dracula, The Reptile, etc). I think I'd prefer the priests rather than the Crossbows and Catapults Barbarians as far as theming goes.

admittedly the gameplay is nothing to bring home about and the spiral thing is as irritating and nerve-racking as the one in treasure of pharaohs... but the artwork... the artwork simply belongs to an art museum.. its stunning!!! and for 20 pounds... you are a lucky son of a gun my friend!!!!!! great find to a great owner!

Boy, am I running behind - however, the video was worth my wait! Thanks for another fantastic (literally!) and informative overview, and thanks also for keeping Manchester safe from (or is that for?) ectoplasmic activity. The cover art - not to mention the deathʼs‐headʼs sound effects - reminds me a bit of that of a classic ʼ70s horror‐effects LP, _Sounds_ _to_ _Make_ _You_ _Shiver!_ Cover (front & back) and playback can be dug up here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXmmzM-AaKzae7g.html …And your discussion of the problem of the religious iconography for Western markets reminds me of another Bernardo favorite, In Teufels Küche (“In the Devilʼs Kitchen”), the German game that declares itself “Der höllische Spaß für die ganze Familie!” - “Hellish fun for the whole family!” I have trouble imagining that going over smoothly here in America: the game in which Mom and Dad, Bro and Sis have fun competing to see who serves Satan best! But getting back to Horror House: Oh, how I wish the game were equal to the tantalizing art. I think this is one where you really have to bring along your own Halloween spirit to overcome the gameplay flaws. Fortunately, as the video attests, you have that spirit in abundance. Well, I need to get going - I want to follow up on your other episodes of the past couple months, and then I still have to catch up with your latest…getting _back_ _to_ _the_ _future_ as it were! Keep on hauntinʼ!

There’s some great photos of the mechanism on this website, really helped me with fixing mine. I speculate there’s a spring that’s missing, the needle retracts to the outer edge of record when let go horrorhouseboardgame.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=14214519
