i have to say the announcer handled the situation really well. gave info concerning the downed drivers and loose horses quickly, efficiently, and calmly. not many people would be able to do that.

Welcome to New York: "We have drivers down! We have horses loose! The quarter was 31 and 1." We all know thoroughbred jockeys are risking it all. These poor drivers have horses AND flying sulkies to contend with, Wow.

I didn't even notice all but one driver was on a horse!!! I've never, ever, ever seen a buggy behind a horse, with no driver! Let alone 3!

That one horse was like..I'm free!

There's a lot of comments from people who know nothing about racing. Realize you can watch hundreds and hundreds of races and never see a spill or injury of any sort. You come across footage of a famous accident or a large-scale one like this and you can hardly contain your inane uninformed (even nasty) comments. Stick with what you know, or acquaint yourself with the topic before you speak.

Really does the other guy notice that there are no racers to challenge him after they just got mangled?

The driver of the one single remaining horse tried pulling back but once a stampede is in effect and one driver remains a red light won't make a difference I think.

Your saying it is not a sport and its dangerous for the horses but they enjoy it most of the time a trainer cant get the horse to retire because it loves racing.

Fortunately none of the horses were seriously injured. However, lots of broken bones amongst the drivers. I'm not sure why the one driver contd at racing speed, dangerous, as race was called. And where were the outriders?

Just a guess, the horse was spooked and wanted to run. It's better to let them burn off the scare than try to corral them and someone gets hurt.

I assume this was a no race??

I don't think horses are get killed every day but I can now see your point. I like horse races too but I think it's as dangerous as showjumping or dressage. Like the one guy up there wrote no one died. We can get broken bones, horses may get some injuries but they are usually very tiny problems. People know nothing about horse sports and they come here to say these things just because they believe everything what they see. They don't think it like us who have been working with horses whole life

Why no shit? Horses alone can be lethal let alone horses with carriages.

A no contest should be automatic in Harness racing any time one horse falls down. I have seen many of them and there is no need to continue with a race after an accident.

Why is anything a sport? I know so many sports which are more dangerous than any horse sport but because of this kind of accidents people goes crazy. I'm a dressage rider, showjumping rider and still, I was almost get kill on swimming race. And I wasn't a bad swimmer at all. If you think this is dangerous you should think about sport like motorbike driving or free diving. Or just jogging which is by the way as dangerous as horse riding if you have everything what you need when you ride.

alot of the time the horses are still "green" or too young..this high speed gate is not too great ona horses bones. It causes soreness and even bone fractures. sometimes the people racing the horses, will push a horse too far. I dont see a huge problem with horse racing.. but people need to understand the horse.. and respect it. I think racing would be alot more fun and competitive to see, if the horses were not pushed so hard..yes they love to run.. some are just not ready. :)

He can't stop and i'm fairly certain that at this point this race was declared a no contest by the judges, and bets were refunded. This is the one thing you *never* want to see regardless.

Thoroubreds and standardbreds have been raced from a walking start, But thoroughbreds use a starting gate, and so do standardbreds. It makes for a more fair start.

Okay, so what would you propose he'd done...pull up without the judge's say-so and get fined? Also keep this in mind, drivers in harness racing get paid next to nothing if they don't place at all. So put the broad brush back in the tool box. By the way, you need to actually brush up on what happens in situations like these instead of shooting off at the mouth, it's a bad look.

Because he had to. He has to finish the race or he'd be fined, although this will probably be listed as no contest. What do you want him to do, pull up and stop the other horses? He can't. Research more on racing before making a stupid comment.

Everyone involved with the barbaric spectacle known as horse racing is a MONSTER who deserves to be tortured worse than the animals are already being abused !
