Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium ALBUM REVIEW

Listen: horrendous.bandcamp.com/album...
A pretty solid album from Horrendous, even though the band finds mixed results outside of their comfort zone.

So many metal albums needing discussion - tesseract, pain of truth, tomb mold, dying fetus, and on and on. so many good albums this year
Didn't expect to see this pop up here, and was really hoping you'd review this one. I had the pleasure of chatting with the band and the love and passion put into this record really made me fall in love with it. I definitely still think I prefer Idol, but it's a lovely record from some of the best to do it right now in tech-death!
Yes! More metal reviews please Tony
Absolutely love these guys. Saw them in a dive bar about a month ago and they put on a phenomenal show and I got to talk with them at the merch stall. The drummer complimented my Thantifaxath shirt and said they were supposed to tour with them! This album is amazing, I would give it a 8 or a 9. The guitar tone is just stunning and the band’s songwriting is clearly a step above.
I'm an old friend of the bass player, and I was finally able to see them perform earlier this year. These guys know how to put on a performance, and they looked like they were having a blast. I urge everyone to check them out.
will there be a review of the new baroness album
It's great that you're doing extreme metal reviews, so keep it up !!!
Baroness album review when?
Idol is one of my favorite metal albums. I've been listening to them since 2017.
Incredible band. Incredible album. I think it's their most interesting work. I think they found a way to lay on a variety of emotion on this album. Which is oddly more lacking in a lot of Death Metal.
@squatchjosh1131
10 ай бұрын
I think that's just a result of the death metal ethos which is mainly to be macabre. It works for growling whereas it's more difficult to articulate more complex emotions or it's a bit of a clash. Not to say that shouldn't be experimented with, just that I kind of get it.
Expected a Yellow flannel for this, but I agree with pretty much everything said here. Fun record still. Wondering what your thoughts on Tomb Mold's latest would be seeing as you enjoyed this and love the new Blood Incantation maxi single, but tend not to like more proggy metal.

The main disadvantage of the new camera is that the records in the background are harder to make out. I get the D'Angelo, but what's the top one? Hyped to listen to the Horrendous album!
I'm really loving this album, is sooooooo amazing
I have yet to hear Idol, but personally I enjoyed this new album. Really loved how strong the influences from Death and Atheist are on here. I remember describing it as if Unquestionable Presence-era Atheist and Symbolic/The Sound of Perseverance-era Death decided to collaborate on a death metal album. I’d personally give it an 8/10 or even a 9/10 (4/5 or 4.5/5). Not sure if you’ll enjoy this since in the video you mentioned how you wasn’t into this style of death metal, but I would recommend Alkaloid’s new album Numen. The big catch though is it’s about twice as long as the new horrendous, but I personally felt they utilized every second very well. I’d also give it the same score as Horrendous’ new album since I feel they’re about on par with each other. Cool video and wish you’d do more Metal related videos too since I think they’re very interesting.

Seconding a comment below for your thoughts on the new Cryptopsy record. The band has been both blessed and cursed with the snobbiest fans in death metal music, so there might be algorithmic incentive for you to touch on the album. Also, imo, it's the best Matt McGachy-era record they've released.
You gonna review new Tomb Mold? Has very similar prog vibes to this Horrendous. Both awesome albums.
I've been enjoying the fast, loose, and varied nature of this album. It doesn't have the persistently sinister progginess of "Idol", nor the grimy sludginess of Anareta, but it feels like the band had a lot of fun making this album, and that gives it an infectious joy even during it's gnarliest bars that gives me a lot of pleasure when I listen to it. Would recommend.
This was my first encounter with this band and I was so impressed that I went back and checked out the much-hyped 'Anareta'. Honestly, I prefer 'Ontological Mysterium', but I'm more of a prog and black than death fan so that might have something to do with it.

I'm personally of the opinion that Ecdysis was this band's high-water mark; not that anything afterwards is bad by any means, but that album just feels so energetic yet refined. The bouncy riff in "The Stranger" is so addictive and the mixture of that classic, grimy Swedish DM guitar tone with the proggy riff horizons that the band explores is simply superb. I highly recommend giving it a spin even if you're not typically a death metal listener.
Mighty Melon. What sort of audio setup do you use when listening to a record you are reviewing?
Fuck yeah this album is awesome, thanks for still reviewing metal Anthony 🤘❤️
You should do the new Baroness album. After your review of Gild and Grey I’m interested to hear what you think about Stone.
Agreed! Enjoyed the album a lot for the most part, just not as much as Idol.
How can you give this album a 7 and still feel the need to call it "horrendous?"
Anthony just because this album isn’t the quality of Angelic 2 The Core by Corey Feldman doesn’t mean you can give it a -3
Thanks for saying last 'two' albums, Anareta in 2015 was nuts
Great album. Melon needs revisit the starter pack series as well as the topster reviews.
I just found this album randomly on Spotify and couldn't believe how good it was. Now I need to digest the rest of their catalog
Great album, actually got a lot closer to Idol than I expected, good surprise
wallsockets by underscores just released with a feature from Jane Remover, by far her best and would highly reccomend
I'm looking forward to your opinion of the new album Love by Diddy. He was going for a 90s r&b hip hop vibe. I don't get that vibe from listening to it, but maybe you will.
0:24 we still havent forgiven you for that last meshuggah review Anthony
They named a band after what you thought of the album?
Currently metal record of the year. Sorry you didn't enjoy it that much. But yeah, in all honesty, I really don't understand how Snõõper and Feeble Little Horse are better than this. Also, that Chrysopoeia critique was a little uncalled for. Sure, they threw everything at the listener, but you didn't really talk about the riffs or the lyrics and just left it at "not the best approach." I think this album deserved more than just 6 minutes for a review.
Do a review of Dayshell’s new album Pegasus! I’d love to hear your take on it
Any chance you'll be covering baroness's new album stone?
Excellent album !!! It really grows on you, and you know when that happens, it has longer listenability than something that seems to be great on first listen but gets boring quickly.

I'm glad to see this kinda stuff reviewed, as there's not nearly enough metal reviewed in an era where there's so much interesting stuff going on (was there a Terrasite review I missed?) That said, I dunno, it's strange to see a guy who reviews pop music regularly and gives artists pretty decent reviews who show almost no musical growth whatsoever & write very straightforward songs, then go to a prog death metal band who has shown like near-miraculous levels of growth from album to album, take easily one of their best records or tied for their best, and complain that they dont show that much growth! How much is a band/musician expected to grow? How much can one band grow & change before just sorta reaching their sound, refining & experimenting with it a bit from there? It's almost like capitalism brain to expect perpetual growth, leaps & bounds of growth across every album cycle--and it is not the same criteria applied to every genre or artist. I recall a now-ancient review of the Faceless where (in true tech death fan style) their experimentation and growth was the main complaint lmao. Anyway, review more metal. If most of your videos are about Drake & Kanye & Kendrick or Taylor Swift we're gonna have to revoke your music nerd card.
You need to check out the new tomb mold record, it’s absolutely incredible
September has been a pretty good month for music so far
Aoty for me but to each his own. Thanks for reviewing, I’ve asked at least ten times for it.
Maybe you can check out Gridlink's new record, it's some really solid grindcore.
Hey Anthony I always notice that you say that you're not very crazy about progressive/technical metal records yet in that genre it's all you talk about. You never talk about stuff like brutal death metal or goregrind, at least not anymore and I'm curious as to why. Is it because of the subject matter/album covers not being very advertiser friendly or is there another reason?
Jokes aside I'm pleased to see your recovery from covid 😊 nice review

I liked this album a lot, definitely more than Anareta. It feels like Horrendous are reaching out in the right direction but made something really messy. Coming off of Idol it had some big shoes to fill and just doesn’t quite make it.
What a great year for death year huh. This, Tomb Mold, Blood Incantation, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, among others along with the upcoming Suffocation

Decibel ranked this as their no 1 in their top 40 albums of the year. Personally I think that rating is for the album art. Some good moments but not necessarily a good album. Agree with Fantano for once that these guys stuff in every possible thing they can think of together and it doesn't necessarily make it an enjoyable listen unless you're some kind of technical elitist.
