Horology Raw & Uncut: American Master Watchmaker Dan Spitz

Ғылым және технология

Dan Spitz is a third generation Master Watchmaker. He remembers sitting on
his Grandfather's lap in his watch and jewellery store in the Catskill
Mountains of New York when he was eight years old staring at the inside of a Patek Philippe in amazement. Yet the road to independent haute horology took a few bends - from being a cofounder of heavy metal group Anthrax, 40
million records sold, Grammy nominations; to decades of touring the world
spreading his love for metal.
Nowadays, at his watchmaking studio, Dan quietly shapes different metals.
Passionately and persistently, making his mark on time.
Two minds in one body, outspoken, raw and uncut.

Are you frickin kidding me??? I spend my youth listening to Anthrax, skipping school and blasting their music in my car and now I find that Dan is a master watchmaker...something that I only was able to do on a hobby level??? I just passed out. Fantastic interview! 1000 thanks!

Dan is one of the most criminally underrated guitar players in Metal ! His leads were always so unique so I imagine he brought that to making watches.

Danny's mom was a substitute teacher in my high school in the late 80s. When we had her for class, the only questions that were asked were about her son and Anthrax!

Dan, you inspired me to also make it in the Music Industry, getting signed, recording albums, touring and playing along side some of the Biggest bands in the World across the world, unfortunately never with Anthrax but I was front row directly in front of you in Melbourne when you toured for the P.O.T album. You have left a huge legacy in the Metal world and even though I was a Bass player and not a Lead Guitarist you still inspired this me and that helped me to leave my tiny legacy on the Metal World thanks to you. The world needs inspirational people like you!

Thanks Nick and Josh. Great to see someone like Dan answering his second calling (or his original calling perhaps). Really sad about the issue with the parts and the training situation in the States and indeed globally. Great to meet you the other day Nick, I really appreciate here is somewhere in Sydney where you can buy watch repair equipment, I have already put the oils to good use.

Love the video! It sounds like master watchmakers have a lot in common with Cuba. Being cutoff from parts but making it work perfectly, regardless. Rock stars. Not like glam because of their true love of what they are doing. Glam dudes only care about the fame. GAG! And its funny. I came to this after finishing on another KZread channel an Anthrax show from the Sound of White Noise tour. And just as what Danny had eluded to and what Charlie and Scott had said about Dan leaving. He looked disinterested on stage. Still played perfectly but disinterested. You can definitely see that spark in Dan's eyes about his life now. I don't care about time pieces but Dan's designs look killer. I hope to meet him someday. Long time Anthrax fan who saw just how killer Dan is as a musician and since then a killer watchmaker. GOD Bless you all in your future endeavors!

Wow, I did a simple search as a fan of Anthrax checking up on a guitar player and found this video! I guess the 4 "thumbs down" on this video are the manufacturers that will not source parts for repair. Being an average, broke, somewhat mechanically inclined, U.S. citizen that was not born privileged, that can't hardly stomach the thoughts of the average repairman touching anything I own, I am a major advocate for the right to repair and am pissed off with what these manufacturers are trying to do to completely finish destroying our country! With companies like Apple, John Deere, and all the other ones you all may or may not know lobbying our governmental representatives trying their damndest to force us to have to be ripped off by them and essentially being forced to purchase new goods when in reality the item needing repair can be fixed for very little cost with a simple part replacement! Folks, if you are not aware, and most are not, Like Dan mentions in the video, these manufacturers engineer things to fail! At one part in the video, he mentions the manufacture of super-thin gears by some folks in the watch industry where the gears are actually designed to fail! This is nothing new in the manufacturing world, and as a matter of fact, it is actually a major avenue of business and a major generator of revenue for these companies that love to steal your hard-earned cash from you! Though I know nothing about watchmaking, I do understand a little bit about some of the techniques involved in such fine craftsmanship, and it is amazing! After finding this video, I have much greater respect for a guitar player that I have been a fan of for many years, and for as much as music does mean to me, and for all the pinnacles this man has reached in music, I'd have to think that he's been equally, or perhaps even more, successful in the world of watches! This is amazing, it's just sad what it sounds like the manufacturers are doing to the craft by monopolizing everything! Thank the Lord that we, the average person that likes to fix things, have such a brilliant mind advocating for us and our right to repair!! Thanks for creating and sharing this video, of course, you have another subscriber!
