Hornby Dublo Co-Co 3232 Diesel Electric A Return To Running Condition And Fitting New Traction Tyres

This time I bring this Hornby Dublo Co-Co Diesel Electric locomotive number 3232 back to being a runner and try it on the test layout to see how the new traction tyres perform. Thanks for looking.

It's amazing how Hornby got this one so wrong ! Yet it's amazing how many are still out there ! They apparently got the dimensions for the class 23 baby deltic but nobody picked up on it until it was in production? Then it was said , "Will kids care anyway? After all, it's only a toy!

You are right, it does have a style of it's own. Not a bad model for it's age though. Thanks for looking, all the best to you

Hi great video, lovely to watch. That group of models makes a lovely sound all together on the track. Always wondered why Hornby Dublo used such fine wire? Oscar

Hello Oscar, thanks for looking in again. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. While I start on my main layout I have a couple of round to it jobs that may be interesting, I'm looking forward to getting them out for a fresh look. Those thin wires are so delicate and require gentle handling. When you think of the over engineering generally by Meccano they seem a bit out of place. About the sound of the rolling stock, I totally agree, the sounds along with the smells of the loco are something to enjoy, I love the old models. Best regards to you.

That is a great looking loco and running very well. It would look terrific with a rake of maroon coaches behind it. I would be interested in knowing more about where you got those traction tyres. Great video and good to hear that you will be building a Dublo layout as well as the big Tri-ang one. Regards, David.

Hello David, It was fun to get this loco running again. Since making the video I've had to remove the tyres as they are now found to be out of round and causing the loco to wobble. I'm now looking for another supplier. I'm a little disappointed as I thought these were going to be good replacements. I'll let you know what new ones I use. Best regards to you

@@MrSnooze I've used both the flat tyres and also rubber O rings, neither of which was particularly successful, mainly due to that wheel wobble which really doesn't look particularly professional. with the power of the ringfield I ended up just running them sans tyres. when I was converting one to the prototype deltic I discovered that there were two different castings: for the lined two tone livery there was a distinct casting line on the two tone line, the plain green deltic doesn't have this. I have a suspicious feeling that such was the parlous state of dublo at the time that they updated the casting in '61 and such were the stocks they could sell both versions up until the end of dublo years later... great videos too :)

@@muir8009 I get quite obsessed with this wobble. I'm working on a 3 rail Bo-Bo and have actually found a couple of the wheels to have been centred out of true. I think this is often the case on both Dublo and Tri-ang. I might machine them out on my lathe and press in some brass and re drill just to see if it cures it. I do have a Crepello so I'm going to compare the castings. That's interesting information, thank you for sharing. Best regards to you

That looks like it's running very nicely. I've got a couple of these locos, I've found them amazingly powerful but I was rather disappointed with those tyres. I did find it possible to improve the wobble by evening out the tension by going round with a small jewellers screwdriver between the wheel groove and the tyre. However, the black ones seem to be better shaped and don't cause nearly so much wobble. I found with the wiring that one issue is that over the years the insulation has become brittle and this seems to cause repeated fractures in the wire. I've been replacing the wiring with modern very thin wire, usually sold as 'decoder wire' which is available in loads of different colours, including red and white of course. These locos do look good with a rake of maroon coaches as David says in his comment - I thought I had a video on my channel of this, but it's in fact a Triang EM2 hauling them. Thanks for posting this video and best wishes. Keith

A well made video Mr Snooze. You have a natural ability for presenting information. Your filming and editing is just right. Because your videos come up in a KZread feed, a lot of your early stuff is coming through linked to other peoples videos. This one came up after I watched Ron Dodds 2020 Magnetizer. You should be getting more hits. If you are looking to increase your subscribers you have to ask them to like and subscribe ( which is a bit cheesey as your already aware of ) 😁👍

Hello Tim, thanks for looking at some of the older videos and the kind comments. When it comes to asking for likes and subscribe etc I just think it best for the channel to find it's own way. I started the channel at the beginning of the first Covid lockdown as a bit of fun. I never expected it to get much interest in reality. Anyway, I have got my items out of storage and had huge fun getting the layout to this stage, also I've enjoyed all the interaction with people who have shown such interest in the vintage railway I run. I now look forward to making the little video's and thinking of what new things I can try and show to others on KZread. It's much appreciated that you and others take the time to watch and write the comments you do. Take care, best regards to you

HD have an excuse for loco being somewhat different to any prototype! It was made before the prototype. Advertised by a number of them pulling an actual child in a straight line! As per catalogue!
