Wow guys, Little Bythan is really progressing and looking fantastic, a real credit to Tony’s attention to detail. Hope you will post some more of Mr Wright’s layout in the near future. Regarding the APT what an absolute stunner, after so many examples Hornby complete the cycle finally, congratulations. It looks like great care is required in the coupling process, as some of the carriage to carriage alignments are less than perfect, possibly a bit more running time would resolve the issue. Thanks again guys, what a wonderful world you live in, but watch where you insert rolled up scrolls 😂

My favourite trains of all time, but only ridden on it a couple of times, when they allowed Staff to try it out. Hellish experience 😁 Will never ever have a chance to own a wonderful train like the one in your video because, like many others, we have an original Hornby set, with all it's issues, a spare unit (the 4 coaches) with a spare 'unpowered' power car and a load of parts, Lots of them, which I should have put on ebay, years ago. Always hoped that Hornby would simply provide the other cars, to the same standard and although that never transpired, it's brilliant to see the updated version. Many, many thanks 😁

It was, and still is a stunningly beautiful train, shame the British government forced BR to abandon the project just before they had ironed out all the bugs.

Department for Transport forced BR to start timetables services before the prototype sets were even run in and mid winter at that: suffered massive media derision and summarily parked up At the time central government really couldn’t care less about rail At the same time BA introduced turn up and go high frequency shuttle services between Scotland and London further diminishing the potential upfront revenue. Technically brilliant through failed from the very beginning with the Gass turbine test unit which cost a fortune and went nowhere when the funds could have wired Pancras - Derby !

It wasn't totally abandoned. Some of the technology went into the Intercity 225 sets. The bugs had been sorted. The main reason for abandonment was cost. They weren't prepared to invest in signalling so it could only have travelled at 125 mph, way below the designed 155mph. They came to the conclusion that 125 was not much faster than 110mph the class 87s were doing. Typical of this countries backward thinking.

@@Degsie1975 This is correct and thirty years on in cab signalling to allow 140+ exists only on HS1 within the UK. The problems are compounded by having 80mph local , 110/125 mph express and intermodal and bulk freight trains operating along the same corridors at the same time . This was and is the fundamental principle in FAVOUR of HS2 along the most intensely industrialised and populated corridor on this island .

@@keithdoherty8809 The CAPT system was developed for the APT as a form of in-cab signalling but was probably one of the features that wouldn't have made it from the prototype APT-P to the squadron service APT-S. I think the likely configuration of the APT-S would have been more like the Pendolinos but with a power car at one end.

Watching this, it occurs to me that BR inadvertently built a train that would've met Channel Tunnel safety regs in the sense that it could split in the middle, like a class 373 Eurostar. Wonder how complex fitting TVM430 in-cab signalling would've proven. Ah, what might have been...

  • @GDGRailway47712

Orangish light was indeed the standard class whilst the grey light was from the first class interior. It is probably a bit exaggerated on the model. The reality was that the cars and sets got mixed up in service so it doesn't matter where they go really. Also, the number of times a full 14-car double set actually ran is in doubt. Most videos of them show the north-end set being a full 6+power car and the south-end set being 2+power car or 3+power car, so 10 or 11 cars in total.

  • @michaelgrey7854

Did you run two powered NDM's? I got the latest 7 car set (2023) and it cannot handle even the 7 cars on its own. Infact it does not even start moving until I put 65% power on. At full power, it is slower than my Bachmann Blue Pullman.

I have 14 car set with just the one powered car in the middle and worked out it's average speed on my layout around 150mph. Slightly below the designed 155mph, but still fast enough. Only thing with the one powered car, the other is a dummy, is that it can lose traction on slight inclines. If you had a perfectly level layout it would go faster.
