Also if you’re noticing unexplainable hair loss, get that bloodwork done to check first for a Vitamin D deficiency! Most Black folks/dark skinned ppl are deficient because our melanin inhibits us from fully absorbing Vit D into our skin (from the sun). Also checking to see what your iron levels are is super important to hair health too! So many of us are anemic & don’t know OR we do know and don’t do anything about it. I would start w/ Vit D + iron, the basics. But YES to the rest of these tests Kee listed too, if you’re not deficient in either of those. 🙌🏾

I am a thyroid cancer/graves survivor. I literally was only 31 when I found out. I experienced hair thinning ; falling out ; and more. I didn't know why I was just randomly going through these things until I got my TSH/T4 thyroid blood panel. Saved my life because I had no idea I had cancer! Sooo many times our symptoms go ignored when it literally can be the thyroid. (or others) . I have now gotten my thyroid fully removed. Healed from graves diseases and cancer and now my levels have finally gotten normal. My hair has grown allllll the way back and fast and full and healthy. Ladies please go get those levels checked even if you have mild symptoms! I'm 5 years cancer free now with healthy hair :)

I got a new doctor this year and she broke down the TSH/thyroid panel. I've had my thyroid checked several times and it finally showed my thyroid being low. She said that on the surface, it can look normal, but when they break it down, they can see more that's going on. With my meds, the hair fuel vitamins you suggested and sea moss supplements (prevents shedding), my thin and bald spots are filled in. And if you can, see a black woman doctor. They're typically better listeners, and we know how hard they worked to get that degree. Black female doctors have changed and saved my life.

This! I knew from age 13 that I had low thyroid, but when I graduated college and moved away, the doctors all said, "Well yeah, it's a *little * low, but it's low-normal." Like, is that even a thing? It wasn't till my cholesterol was maxed out when I was in my 40s that they'd even run the breakdown. And at the same time, the doctor was saying, "Girl, you've got to lose some weight!" And the doctor was even heavier than I was! But when the tests came back all was revealed. That doctor then retired and her replacement actually listens to me. It's good when you go in and feel like they see and hear you.

I am Caucasian & I have undergone many endocrine issues for many years. This includes thyroid issues, hormonal issues, Vitamin D deficiency & adrenal insufficiency. I am a retired RN & found it difficult for MD’s to order the labs you suggested. Insurance can be very picky on some of these tests. In the end it took a holistic/integrative/internal medicine doc to get me on the right track. After I moved out of state I sought out a similarly skilled physician successfully. The key here is to find a doc that is progressive & thinks out of the box.

My hairloss was due to vitamin d deficiency. My internist said it was the lowest in any patient he ever saw (and he's the top in our state). I still remember getting the call while i was in GNC. I was like, "perfect timing, im in GNC now!". He said, "Ma'am, there's nothing in that store you can buy to get your levels up!" I was on 50k iu for 2 years straight. Hair is back full. Everything else was ruled out. Please note that sometimes you need to go beyond the basic blood work that is given at your local clinic or you primary care doctor. My internist literally ran every test he could to make sure he left no stone unturned. Thankfully, now we are able to see previous bloodwork dating dating back years from multiple providers. I could see where the bloodwork from other providers made it seem as if everything was ok.... but it wasn't

I broke a bone in my foot and the Dr was the one who said I bet your vitamin D is low. I went back the next week she said you're 12.5 your critical. So I said what vitamin do I need I'll pick it up. She said I need you to call your primary Dr immediately. The med she gave me was replensa(?) 50k units once a week I'm on week 2. So I looked it up and saw hair loss. I told the foot Dr I did notice hair change and couldn't figure it out. I sweat a lot working out running so I went back to a relaxer. When I was 39 I was natural for years and worked out and wore it straight then. So I cut it short and relaxed then I grew it out went back natural 2 years but that sweat is different at 55 I kept it straight in a 4A. Anyway I've been back with my relaxer my hair has been excellent. The Dr said it will take many months till my numbers even get to the lowest which is 30. Mind you I haven't really seen any abnormal shed but I could see to me my hair was not 100. My hair dresser who is old school said my hair is healthy she's cut off any mess.. But I see saw some changes cause my hair is normally dense and in the back it was not as thick... Also I was on aBP water pill which can effect hair which I'm no longer on and figured it will take a few till that med is out system. How long was it that you noticed a difference after taking vitamin D? Thank you for the info too...

You can also ask your clients about recent diet changes. If they are vegan or vegetarian they may have low iron. Iron deficiency can cause anemia which just means that you don't have enough red blood cells carrying oxygen to your organs and muscle and even your scalp. Anemia can cause a number of health issues long term, including hair loss. Tell them to ask their doctor to measure their iron levels the next time they go in.

I can't say enough about how grateful I am to have found your channel many months ago! Every video gives me a warm caress that's reminding me what God whisperd to me in 1992 - "Whoever told you your nappy hair is bad - that wasn't Me"!! That was the beginning of my precious Loc journey, and I've never looked back. However, I've never had the privilege of having someone touch my hair with the gentleness, respect, and honoring that I see you give everyone you serve. If you could see me right now as I've finished this video, you'd wonder why tears are streaming down my face. It's bitterseet, because what I see in you is something I long for. At 70, I'm well aware I grew up in a time when all my mom knew to do was "wash" my hair with Prell - which made it feel like a brillo pad😢. Loc'ing was the first time I felt free. They hang down my back near my waist & stop people in their tracks. But I would love to have a new kind of freedom, where I have the healthiest nappy hair on earth but flowing free, and with a versatility my current locs can't give me. When I watch you work your magic, Kee, I often well up, both with delight & longing. Todays information was powerful - so much a part of the nurturer you are!!! Thank you for your transparency, vulnerability, and loving kindness. You are a balm to Black women like me who grew up far away from the standard called "good" hair. It was painful, and there's still a little girl inside me that is touched by you. Blessings!!!❤❤❤❤

I wanted to share two tips about going to the doctor: One is that when you go and explain whatever problem you’re having (any health problem-not just hair loss) try to keep it to one issue at a time. If you mention hair loss and then your back aches and head aches etc. they automatically get overwhelmed when they already have hardly any time for any patients as it is. Another random tip is don’t wear makeup to the doctor. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dermatologist or your regular GP. They prefer to see your skin how it looks naturally because just like you said, skin give a lot of clues and when you cover up the clues, they won’t find them.

I just saved this video Kee!! My hair went through a really stressful period last year . I went into menopause at 42 ,but my hair was still thriving in spite of . Last year my hair just starting thinning out and my stylist had to end up taking off a significant amount of which really end up making me so sad ,because my hair had grown past the middle of my back which was the longest it had ever been in my life. I ended up going to the doctor and had some of the panels you mentioned done . It ended up being my vegan lifestyle. I wasn't getting enough of the nutrients that i needed . So me and my doctor came to a compromise. He put me on a 80/20 nutrition regime. My plate now 80 percent plant based and 20 percent animal protein. The health of my hair has improved significantly. I also have incorporated sea moss and collagen and i can definitely tell the difference. My hair is noticeably thicker than what it was and there has been less shedding 😁

I went to get blood work and found out I had somewhat normal iron but very low ferritin and also had extremely low vitamin D. Be sure to ask them to check your ferritin too in addition to iron. Ferritin is basically your iron stores and when this number is low usually there is hair thinning. Most times you have to ask them to check this as well because they may only check iron and iron saturation.

Mine is a 61 now, which is great.

Thank you so much for this information Sis. I'm currently struggling with balding, hair loss and texture issues. I'm old school. So we weren't taught to ask for these particular tests. And besides that most doctors just spit out the word alopecia for black women. Oppose to diving deeper into the root cause. So we unfortunately just end up suffering in silence.

My hair was thinning. I find going to the doctor is pretty much useless. I took it into my own hands. Starting drinking collagen peptide powder daily and at the same time went off of the standard American diet (SAD) and I’m now on an animal based lifestyle (yes carnivore). Not only lost 100 or so pounds but my hair is thicker fuller and denser than ever but my gut microbiome is in check and I feel amazing. Too many carbohydrates/sugars will wreck your health. I also take 10,000iu of vitamin D with K2 daily but if I’m out in the sun during the summer with shorts and sleeveless shirt for at least 20 or so minutes, I don’t generally take it. During the winter I take it daily. It is about what you eat. If you’re overweight, that is a sign of insulin resistance/sensitivity and poor metabolic health. Cutting out the ultra processed foods and consuming high amounts of animal protein and intermittent fasting works. Remember the so called health care system in America is a joke. They make money when we’re sick and fat. The pharmaceutical companies want us all on their pills so they make money.

Thankfully, I had just had an MD visit with labs and knew the real reason behind all of it. She took one look at me and made assumptions, and spent the majority of the appointment telling me what I should be eating.

Most doctors will only test your T4, which is an old fashioned protocol, unless you specifically ask them to include a test for T3. The issue is you may have quite enough T4 but your body can’t convert T4 to T3 (the usable hormone). Trust your intuition. If you think something isn’t right it isn’t.
