Hormann Silent Drive. Your Thoughts?

I don't have enough experience with these openers. I kinda started liking it with the self learning limits but we all know this might be like a bic lighter and it won't be long and it's in the garbage.

I believe you have the power head on backwards. The wire door and controls should be at the rear of the unit, away from the garage door.

I've dealt with a few of these operators and yes those stoppers are what set your limits. In my experience they are a pain to get replacement parts and remotes. Usually end up switching to a liftmaster operator for simplicity for the customer. Also I found out that using a liftmaster 850lm to give the client more remotes will not work with these units.

Sounds like some have had better luck with these than others. I would like to hear your view now 2 years later. I have had mine 7 years now and would not trade them for anything. I had several other brands but these are super quite and the Kevlar belt is indestructible. Its German made and probably over engineered but I have had zero issues with mine....

With concrete ledges like that we usually drill a hole in the tracks and secure these sensors with a track bolt

I always worry the vibration could cause a call back but maybe those hormann have a good range of motion on them and would be just fine.

@@affordabledoorgatellc7391 very good point. Usually I use genie gear and have never had that issue with them. Sommer on the other hand....... No way could you mount them on the tracks with a rough door. Lol they are the most ridiculously sensitive sensors ever created. You breath on them and they go out of alignment.

I've never seen them. But they do share a similar design language to Marantec. You'll probably have to replace it in a year or so.

well, i don’t even know about these yet. what i would have done differently, i would have ran sensor wires inside the wall on the side of the framing, and would have done pigtails, and what u did with the wall button. therefore, if this is ever replaced, it would be easier to replace. and when the drywall guys come, they just have to poke a hole and pull it through and it’ll all be hidden. and at the top of the unit, i would have zip tied all of them to make it all neater, and then done yet again what u did with the wall button wire, just with about 2 feet. that’s just my opinion tho, u may have done this a lot and it come out fine.. i just feel like since they aren’t common, that it’ll be a callback for the electrician with the wiring.

They're supposed to be mounted horizontally with the wire connectors closest to the wall. Not vertically like this fellow has them.

My parents have a Hormann silent drive from 2007 and so far it's been a nice unit, hopefully they haven't completely cheaped them up in recent years and made them total junk that would be disappointing

Hi Dave. The beard makes you look like Jedidiah Johnson. Cool stuff. I understand the "no shave until COVID is over" thing. I told my wife I'm doing Elvis sideburns until this is over. Right now they're almost touching each side of my mouth. Truth is, they'll likely stay when its over in 2025. That's what happens when you get older. You prefer to do things your own way and you're not quickly influenced by outside forces. Case in point, current forces think we should listen to Justin Bieber or rap. Current forces are wrong. Hormann is definitely a separate company than Marantec. The operator design is similar in the same way the Liftmaster and the Guardian share features. That is where it ends though. My understanding is the Hormann unit is not their main push. They're a door manufacturer and don't put much effort into the operators. That unit design is rather old and yes, it is strange looking. And yes, I'm biased, but comparing Hormann to the current Marantec lineup is like looking at a 1995 BMW and seeing similarities to the current BMW lineup. For Europe, photo eyes are optional, thus, they're not exactly state-of-the-art. At least that is my conclusion when I spend any time with Sommer or Hormann eyes. Marantec dealers went through Hell 12-15 years ago with their eyes. Right now, I think Marantec eyes are the most bullet-proof eyes out there. Keep up the good work. Grow the beard. Tell your wife that you know how much she digs it.

I believe these are a Marantech product, also made in Germany.. we wont touch either products and thankfully rarely come across them in our business. They're junk and they're an ugly design. Just a suggestion...Always do pigtails on the sensors that way if there needs to be a repair down the road there is some extra wire there to work with and gives it a little space if something would catch on wire it may not break as easily it would stretch a bit.

Incorrect. Hörmann and Marantec are two different companies, not related, other than industry. The door he's installing is also Hörmann brand. Both companies make a decent product that has proven reliable, allbeit a bit on the ugly side, and oddly designed.

They're decent machines, usually, but we got the ugly version of them. Like all the European ops we have, they're goofy. That belt seems to hold up well.
