HorizonRC.com How To - Set your Slipper Clutch

There are few components on your RC car or truck that have as direct an impact on the overall durability and life of your transmission as the slipper clutch. This often under-utilized and misunderstood component of your RC car or truck has long been used to improve traction and reduce wheel spin on slippery surfaces. However, that's only part of the picture. A slipper clutch can also help extend the life and performance of your transmission as a whole. We recently dove into the workings of the slipper clutch on the Losi Strike to point out the innermost workings of the design, how to maintain your slipper and how to properly adjust your unit. Come along with us as we show you how to be a slipper clutch master.

Have been doing a lot of pre-build research on my TLR buggy being new to the hobby. In the manual all it says is 'partially tighten'. So I take this as meaning 'go away and do some research dummy'. So here I am and I must say a big thank you for this video, awesome guide. Not just a simple 'how to adjust video', but explains why it's there and shows the results of a poorly adjusted slipper. Nice one.

@murdamechanik You pretty well nailed it. That's exactly what can happen when a slipper is too loose. Just be very careful in that situation because the slipper plates, the motor mount and other items around that area will be super hot too!

If they're on gravel it is really easy for sentiment and other little bits to get in between the spur gear cover and the motor plate. It is possible that something got up in there and fouled the works.

If you look at 6:10 you can clearly see the perch is on the inside (closest to the spur gear).

So when you push the car away from u as soon as it starts to roll is that when you peg the gas or do you say when your about to push it cause I think it is the first way in which you push it and then give it has

@1RCMASTER1 I believe the Jato's slipper is still located on the top shaft of the transmission so the adjustment process would be the same.

@rcgflextilgodper I think there's supposed to be springs in the outdrive cups to keep the main driveshaft centered there, but not 100% sure as I don't have a Slash 4x4, sorry.

Hi, Im running a 5.5t brushless (6000kv) and I was wondering how tight I should set it, If I make it slip like you said for 1 or 2 car lengths would it be too tight for the motor size?

my pressure plate on my rustler vxl seized up yesterday. It happened after I installed a 11.1 lipo bat. I noticed that it wasn't doing any wheelies and acceleration wasn't that great. I drove the car over to me and the slipper clutch and shaft that it is on was smoking!! The motor was spinning the spur gear but the slipper wasn't spinning. Did I have it too loose and cause it to overheat???

I've noticed some peoples videos over the slipper clutch and theirs makes a high squeal pitch. On my ecx ruckus I installed the tazer 4000kv esc/motor combo and set the slipper correctly. My slipper doesn't make a squeal noise though, it does slip like it needs to though.

i run a xxx cr with 12 turn double and i use almost no slipper clutch cause the power that the motor has will just spin the clutch on the straights. throttle control is the key. i was just wondering about the slip distance on low traction surfaces when using a mod motor. it seems pointless to have a fast car with a slipper when you cant really use the power and the clutch simultaneously.

Mmmm I see... Exist any possible way to install a larger battery? I actually have a Dynamite 180 and was thinking to upgrade to a 300 mAh... But now I'm just thinking to install a larger pack by mounting it on the back of the body where is the sticker of the wheel... Anyway thanks for your answer :)

Its not a set setting, as it were. You need to experiment and see what tension gives you the best combination of slip and grip.

You shouldn't be using the slipper for a traction aid. Especially on slick surfaces you'll never be able to set it loose enough to compensate for the low traction yet tight enough to not prematurely wear out the parts.
