Horizon Zero Dawn AFTER The Hype | Was It Worth It?

Ойындар

It's 2019 and it has been 2 years since horizon zero dawn hit the PS4. While the frozen wilds is great, its time to look back at the gameplay experience of the base game, the hype that gaming anointed it with and what it means for the future. Now that the review train is all but gone, and the ps4 is established even further, where does the game stand? Horizon zero dawn 2 is likely right around the corner, but for now, we have to look at what is already there in front of us to see what aloy might be up to next.

Imo it was a generic open world game that did nothing new, with generic 3rd person gameplay with no depth since you press r3 and automatically know every weakness, with a unique story. There were too many mediocre side quests that were shoved in youe face. Most of them being fetch quests too. I played about the first 8 hours and got bored.

TESV was my first experience with Bethesda. I bought it way too late, and by then every other bug had been ironed out by the modding community, and the same community cranked "ultra-preset worthy" graphics mod one after another among others. But I recognized that that many bugs, that many fails when creating the world, and how most of their other games have those kinds of Unofficial Patches, means to me that Bethesda is ok just pushing games out the door in an unfinished state, porting them to PC as-is, then pushing DLCs out and that's it. It's no wonder they release their Creation Kits, and to their credit, I've seen very few games being moddable to that extent. Bethesda, you hooked me, but you couldn't reel me in.

Loved it.

I've played this game quite a few times in the 5 years it's been out but something just hit me a couple days ago: this is the only game I've ever played where every enemy, aside from the low tier machines and humans, feels like a boss fight! I think it's because there's so many options of how to dispatch them, the feedback of all the chunks and sparks flying and their imposing size that make this one of the most unique, satisfying combat experiences in gaming.

I also just played it a few months ago. I bought a used PS4 because I love Spider-Man in an unhealthy way, and HZD came with it. I loved Spider-Man, the story in that game was top notch too, right up there with the best in comics or movies, but playing HZD just blew me away. I was so caught up in Aloy, and the politics with the tribes, and the history of what happened in the past. There was so much to learn and discover and all of it was fascinating. I usually hate when games take away control for cutscenes, but these were so good I didn't even notice. I bought the PS4 for Spidey, but if I'd realised how great HZD was I'd have boughten one much earlier just for that game.

@@TraipsingThroughLife You should play all the other PS4 exclusives as well. If you enjoyed Spider-Man I'd recommend Infamous Second Son, which also is a very fun super hero game with great gameplay. God of War is another great exclusive with excellent gameplay and an amazing fantasy story. Then you have The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 as well, along with Bloodborne, which is still my favorite game this generation. There are just so many amazing exclusives on the PS4. It still has the same basic mechanics but they are much smoother overall in Second Son. It's a great game, in my opinion, and is overlooked by a lot of people. i generally am not too well informed on upcoming titles and i am rarely picked up by hype (mostly, because i tend not to like Settings or gameplay of the most hyped AAA Titles), but i did buy horizon zero dawn somewhat early on, without preordering - and when i first heard of it i was not a fan of the Setting - i.e. fighting 'Dinorobots' because that just sounded too much like... well, smoke and mirrors. But when is played the game, it was so much more than that, for me, it is one of the bestwritten AAA Games i have played in a long, long time. and together with rocksolid mechanics, and some new Ideas, honestly, that made the game such a jewel for me, despite lacking some of the RPG features that i kind of missed (i.e. Housing, Romancing, more factions, more consequential decisions), which for me pushes it more into the genre of actionadventure, rather than rpg.

I think a lot of people missed out and called the story generic, its the type of game like he said that makes you go out and put the story together yourself. I personally like that type of thing as the hand holding takes some of the immersion away. I love previous Fallout games because every building has a story and so a city cumulatively allows you to get a compounded sense of the world that was. I tracked down every trace and ran over every piece of the map slower than an elderly person with a walker. I think I have over 155 hours in it, I have to say its a top 5 for me this generation and maybe my number one overall. I also loved the visuals, its such an amazing looking game. The pro and an 4k HDR tv, especially a high end one just will take your breath away. Its hard to believe that the Decima engine has been improved since then. I honestly will be running through all the best exclusives on the PS5 when it comes out just to see it in 4k60.

The only thing I would want from the next Horizon Game is a better climbing system. The whole "yellow means climb" felt a little bit like hand-holding and broke a bit of the immersion/excitement of exploration. HZD is, in my opinion, one of if not the best post-apocalyptic game ever made. The gameplay was great but I'm referring specifically to the uniqueness of the story here. All the other post-apoc games (at least the ones I've personally played) have a very similar theme on how the world ended: viral or nuclear (or some derivation thereof). The direction that HZD went in was a much needed breath of fresh air in the genre and, frankly, I thought that it was just goddamned amazing. It is incredibly rare that I can find myself truly enraptured by a game's story (more's the pity) but HZD pulled it off almost as if it wasn't even trying. It truly is a masterpiece and remains firmly ensconced in my top 5 favorite games of all time.

There is so much meaningful and emotionally impactful content in this game i love it. You're given this beautiful world where one second you're walking in the gorgeous moonlit forests and then you're left to quickly duck when a pack of watchers' bright searching eyes cut through the dark and shock you. Then there's great collectibles letting you get a glimpse of what the scenery looked like before the apocalypse, or a random file containing stories of abuse and malnourishment in camps following mankind's fall. The world is masterclass

what a coincidence, I am playing HZD for the first time as you published this video. This game still holds up very well in 2019. I love how the machines respond with the method you choose to deal with them. How they are paralyzed by the trip caster and how they struggled to get the ropes off them if you used rope caster. This RPG is not a game where you can just "grind" your way until you are OP enough to destroy everything in a few arrow shots. The game encourages you to look at your inventory and utilize what you have to deal with those machines. I died five times when I was trying to kill a sawtooth, it lunges at me and dealt massive damage and always kill me with it. Later on, I have found that I can use rope caster to tie it down and watch it literally tripped over and fall on the ground, vulnerable for attack. This game makes you want to experiment with new tools constantly and reward you for doing so. Those hunting ground challenges are actually helpful. (Unlike AC where they need you to perform several air assassinations for no reason but for style) I love these games where they don't hold your hands and teach you step by step. Instead, you can always create your own playstyle. Of course, this game has its shortcoming, especially the character animation when they are in a conversation. Their expressions are slightly off and their eyes are kinda dead sometimes. However, the combat is solid and engaging. And the crafting system is handled pretty well. This game can certainly stand against the test of time and it is a must-have for a PS owner.

Same here. Just got this game about a month ago on sale in PS Store. Complete Edition for $14. My cheap ass almost passed it up too. Glad I didn't. This is probably the best PS Exclusive. And yes, I own and have played the hell out of all of them. (I have the platinums to prove it.) HZD is incredibly fun. Combat alone is enough to keep me entertained for hours. Experimentation alone is a huge fun factor of this game. "I wonder if I can slide between that Thunderjaws legs to proc those canisters with a freeze arrow" Why yes, yes I can. Now that disc launcher I tore off of it will do 200% damage while he's frozen. Sweet. Found method #8 for taking down a Thunderjaw. Time to find another to see if I can kill it with blast wires alone lol.... The moment I fell in love with this game was when I got the bright idea to ropecast a Stormbird into 12 Blast Wires I set in front of me. I lured it over, shot the ropes, and BOOM! Only took a few more arrows to finish it off while it was stunned. This game really rewards combat creativity in a way I haven't experienced in any other game. EDIT: I just beat the game for the first time. Got my platinum trophy too. I spent almost 100 hours on the original game alone. I have yet to start the Frozen Wilds. I got as far as the opening credits after the first Scorcher fight. (Good lord that thing is tough on Ultra Hard!) Anyway, after playing through the last missions people complain about, I can honestly say I loved it. The big reveals definitely hit me hard. I didn't care about being forced into cutscenes because they were revealing secrets I was dying to know. Also, I really like how the side quest and errand grinding is rewarded in the form of allies for the final battle. It made all the time I put into the game feel like it was worth it. Of all the platinum trophies I have earned in PS Exclusives, this one is the most satisfying for sure.

Same here, my only gripes with the game are: 1) The exploration is a bit limited, lots of stuff looks very climbable but isn't and you run into a lot of invisible walls. 2) The crafting/inventory/looting system gives you loads off stuff but very little to do with it apart from selling for money you don't need. 3) The AI is as dumb as a sack of hammers, particularly human enemies.

I bought this game about a month ago for $14 in the PS Store. I legit only bought it because it was the Complete Edition and I heard the game was good. I knew nothing more about it. A month later, this is one of my favorites. Just running around the beautiful game world, and trying new and creative methods of taking down machines is enough to entertain me for hours. Combat is super deep in this game. And VERY satisfying. I don't care who you are. When you down your first Stormbird or Thunderjaw, you feel like an absolute badass. Those are like boss fights you can have whenever you want. The thing I love about combat the most is if you get creative think "I wonder if this will work?" 9 out of 10 times, whatever that idea is, it most certainly WILL work. "I wonder if I can shoot that pile of logs there to roll down the hill, kill the crazy death machines, and just bypass this boss fight entirely..." *Tries it, sees Corruptors get mown down by logs* "Yes. Yes it does work." This game just gives you a glorious open world safari filled with animal-like machines that want to kill you, gives you a some primitive hunting tools, and says "Go have fun". This is not a perfect game but it sure as hell is a very fun game. Some of the most fun in a game I've had in years.

I don't know if I'd say it's the PS4's best exclusive, I'm still leaning on Bloodborne for that, but I think it was a solid game all around. Most open world games have a tendency of making their enemies feel really generic and interchangeable, like the only thing separating one from the other is how much health it has, but HZD had no such problem, at least when it comes to fighting machines. They're dynamic, each one feels like a different beast altogether, slaying them is often like cracking a puzzle, and you get all sorts of new toys that shake up the way you can deal with them. It honestly felt like Dragon's Dogma or Monster Hunter in that regard.

Haha, that's hilarious. While it's a decent game, Bloodborne is nowhere near the best ps4 exclusive. It's not even in the top 10 best games released this generation. To think so otherwise is ridiculous. Comparing HZD and Bloodborne together and pretending that the former is inferior to the latter is a fool's errand at the tallest order. HZD, Spider-Man, Nier Automata, Nioh, Shadow of Mordor, RE 7, Uncharted 4, Fallout 4, Batman AK, Dark Souls 3, and more all one up Bloodborne in more than one area be it storytelling, gameplay mechanics, graphics, and overall presentation. Horizon ZD is the best ps4 exclusive released this generation followed by Spider-Man and Persona 5.

I enjoyed my time with HZD but when I'm done, I did not play it again. I have replayed Bloodborne for at least 7 times. Bloodborne is my all time favourite game, so it is not a fair comparison.

One thing I really love about Horizon, something I wish more studios would implement in their games, is the ability to save progress mid mission/combat without voiding the mission or having to restart. So long as there's a campfire nearby and you're able to make it in the middle of a mission, you can save. If you make an epic play and level up in combat, you can save. This is essentially important as you might die afterwards. With other games, you'd have to go through and replay again. I really wish more games were like that. What I don't like however is there's no save option in the menu, so you're forced to wait for an auto save or find a campfire. This can be very annoying, especially if you're used to saving from the menu or need to do something else; cook food, restroom, etc. Luckily the PS4 has the home button, but still it would be great with an in menu save option. Overall, it's a great game and I highly recommend it.

This doesn't make any sense because the main point of reviews is to help a potential buyer's decision. Not many wants to buy a game YEARS afterward. They want to buy it close to release.

arent reviews there to show if a game is worth buying? with that logic, no game would ever be worth buying, since, even something with a "garantee to be good since its from THAT developer" like destiny, managed to underwhelm. We cant have it both ways, either we wait for reviews to come out before buying, or they make reviews after its been on sale.

HZD was the first game I played after buying a great LG 4K OLED TV with HDR and the PS4 Pro. I was taken aback by how beautiful this game was made. I couldn’t help but sit in my chair and marvel at it and think to myself, “wow, this is where games are going and this is what it’s supposed to look like!” AMAZING!!! The whole game, graphics, gameplay and the story kept me enthralled in this game for almost a year! I LOVED IT!! I don’t have time to play all the great games that have come out in the last few years but, I’m really glad I got into this one.

I've known about HZD since the the Jingles walk thru years ago. I was just amazed by almost everything. Story, scenery, character development you name it. I've played AC:Odyssey which is incredible but when I started playing HZD on the PC with its enhanced graphic functionality I was completely hooked. After 400hrs I'm still playing (leisurely playing - speed runs suck imho) and finding more things to do. I will wait for HZD:FWest to become avaliable on PC.
