Honestly, I think 3 hour movies with intermissions are what can save theaters. Go watch the first half, take a break to BUY MORE SNACKS, discuss what happened and what will happen, then go finish it. But 3 hour movies should have an intermission.

One problem is that means less shows each day and less tickets being sold for different viewings. Example. Horizons at 3 hrs can only be shown 3 times in day in one theater. Quiet Place Day One at 100 minutes is shown 4 times a day in the same theater. At the end of a week that will be 21 viewing for Horizons and 28 viewing for Quiet Place. That doesn't always make money for the theaters with fewer showings.

@@raymondsmith6870 I can see your point. Also, I was puzzled why the AMC theaters nearby aren’t showing this big movie in either IMAX or Dolby Cinema. Now I understand why.

My local theater has only 4 showings today 10:45 am, 2;45p, 6;45 and 9:45pm. At the last show you're getting out at 1 am. Costner fans are older, they're not staying up that late. Bottom line, a lot less tickets being sold.

Western? I'm in already. I love them from the early 20th century until now. Costner? Never let me down in the genre. Three hours? Fuck yes. Apparently multi part? Give me it. No nonsense, straight up bad ass? Give me it all.

@ab-gail Right now I'm watching Once upon A Time In America, the type of movie you don't see anymore directed by Sergio Leone. A director known more for Westerns then his one, I think only, foray into the Gangster film genre. Starring of all people the now unfortunately disgraced for his arrogant political views, Robert DeNiro Coincidentally co-star of one of Costner's best movies The Untouchables. This is why I say in a time where the movie going experience seems, to be dying, thank God Kevin Costner has the balls to make an honest to goodness, gritty R Rated, gritty, epic again, that dispels clichés and reminds people good movies for people who care about story, rich character development, realism, and can still be made. Costner and few other talented directors might just be ushering in a new Golden Age of films not just blockbuster movies, anymore. Like we haven't seen since the 70s or 90s. Made more independently then ever before. Wouldn't it be great if this series is somewhat successful and maybe Costner took a stab again at making another Gangster epic? Maybe continue to bring in other Hollywood heavyweights like Kurt Russell, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey Jr, etc. After so many years of comic book films, remakes, prequels and mostly crap dominating the box offices and eventually boring audiences to death!. Also,.the disgusting obviously failed experiment in Hollywood; wokeism, and PC nonsense being injected into our entertainment, perhaps, finally everyone will start to go to the movies again more often, have a reason too! By the way as an armchair/past online film critic, if you look online you might find some of my full length articles. I am absolutely disgusted, at the lack of integrity from mainstream film critics these days when you can tell obviously Horizon is a quality film which is unfairly being attacked because it's offensive to their activist sensibilities or and I hate the word, to "problematic". Well guess what you idiots the f'n wild west was not a very PC place! But I guess they can't complain about lack of ethnic diversity or cultural appropriation with this one, ohhhh good for them!

I think the multi-part movie with an ongoing storyline, but with a much shorter runtime, was called a serial (serial film, film serial, movie serial, chapter play). Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, the singing cowboys, etc. They migrated to TV. Sounds like the cliff-hanger ending is replaced with a montage. The lack of suspense stemming from formulaic set piece scenes is what many want after so many big budget niche movies.

I am sure he would not have much trouble doing so. He also has many friends and likely a fair amount of favors, as top dogs in Hollywood tend to amass for themselves over a long and successful career. Remember He chose to leave Yellowstone. They wanted and tried hard to work with his schedule but delays made it impossible. So it was something neither party wanted to end up happening. Just saw it. *Fantastic western!* Clever, complex story and characters. I'm glad they showed the Apaches in a fair, equitable light, their reasons laid out simply and honestly. You understand their motivations for fighting the whites. Didn't know there was a Santa Fe Trail going out of Kansas into the southwest where the war with the Apaches happens. The nudity was brief and you don't see much. Some people might be more put off by the violence, which isn't that graphic either. I regard the montage at the end was more like a preview of coming chapters.

[6:07] Sorta. Comfort instead of being lectured is good. But more so, I think people just want something new too. Almost the last decade of movies from Hollywood has been reboots/remakes that lecture us on how we're bad people. People are desperate for *new* & simply entertaining movies. I think/feel/hope we're going to, overall, return to those kind of movies that were popular during the 80s & 90s. With the occasional message driven or deep plot film.

It's borderline a masterpiece to me and I love the ending montage but I can see how it can confuse or even upset people though. But I vastly prefer watching this in theater rather than under the form of a tv series. I think there should have been a way to make the same kind of "to be continued" ending while having a better sens of closure for the first chapter.

Chris haven't seen it yet but the talk of the montage at the end makes me think of Tommy Lee Jones in "Lonesome Dove" the images playing back of the cattle drive and he says "A vision you say, Ya a hell of vision" but love your reviews and knowledge of films. I want to see this soon though.

Glad to hear this is good! I might not be the typical female movie-watcher as I really enjoy westerns, Dances With Wolves and the miniseries Lonesome Dove being my favorites. I guess I grew up watching so many westerns along with my Dad and older brothers, is how I got into them. Costner's had a few misses in his day (Waterworld, anyone?) but is overall a great filmmaker.

I agree with your assessment that the movie is a TV show that was turned into a movie, but the cinematography would have been wasted on TV sets and needs to be seen on a big screen.

I really enjoyed this movie also. I overall do agree that the montage actually did get me excited for the next part. The way it was done felt out of nowhere though and I didn’t initially fully understand if it was a setup for the next chapter or not. Definitely could have been done in a different way to feel better. The way the movie ended just felt weird.

Yes montage for part 2 did not need to be 5 minutes, was overkill!!! Above average, a B movie. too many story-lines that bred incoherency, but still great cinematography with some good ole fashion gun slinging! Hopefully next 3 installments can deliver it to higher ground, but very ambitious by Mr. Costner. I am gonna need alot more cow bell!!!!

The anthology & frontier setting almost sounds like they brought in open-world/sandbox concept from video games like RDR2. But instead of just trying to make a video game movie, which rarely goes well, they just modified the existing movie formula with a new twist. Combining it with how other films like American Graffiti or Crash (2004) told multiple stories.

It is an interesting outside of the box idea for theater revenue. See if audiences are willing to pay to watch a big budget mini series with many multiple parts on the big screen instead of at home on TV or streaming.

It’s good, but the edit makes it hard to follow, especially in the beginning. Too many storylines spread across locations and the movie doesn’t easily help you keep track if them as other movies of this sort would. Also it doesn’t really go anywhere or culminate in anything; it just stops and then becomes a sizzle reel for the next movie. Frankly, I would have cut the wagon train sequence entirely and saved it for part 2. I really wish this chapter felt complete on its own in some way. I wonder if it was always structured this way or it happened in the edit. Still looking forward to part 2. Would love to watch both back to back.

We are making a serious return to indie horror and westerns and I am here for it. Also foreign horror is killing it the last few years I hope you learned a thing or two from Taylor Sheridan Kevin Costner's westerns are phenomenal.. Dances with Wolves is a must-see movie but they all feel dated. And I can't put my finger on why. Guaranteed half the audience is going to see why Kevin Costner left Yellowstone. Lol

The film was definitely oddly structured. I feel like the first 10 minutes could've been cut entirely and the movie should've started with the Indian attack. The best way to describe this movie is like the first few chapters of a good western novel, with different storylines that eventually meet up with each other. I love that Costner doesn't shy away from the brutality of the west (If anything, it could've gone further). My only disappointment really is that Costner is feels like he's barely in the movie despite being front and center of the marketing.

Better then Lonesome Dove? As a kid I stayed the night at my friend's house and went through their movies to put something on as I went to sleep; found Lonesome Dove, but had no clue what or how long it was. I was so engrossed I stayed up till 6am to watch the entire thing. First thing I thought of when they stated the length was LD.

The movie has some thing historically correct and some not so much 1. Indian vs Indian conflict Apache vs Commanchie very correct 2. Status of Federal troops in the West (South Western US) very correct 3. Chinese rail workers in 1862-1863 not correct 4. Union pacific transcontinental rail line being in Wyoming at point in time not correct 5. I would like to hear a historical gun expert on the weapons but I saw a lot of breech loading full cartridge's weapons both long guns and pistols which I am not sure about Chris is right about the ending, it did not feel like the ending do a movie and I think his suggestion for the ending would have worked better The movie having slow points was an advantage. it gave you time to hit the restroom

Real "Indian" attacks could be brutal. They had one during the Civil War in Colorado where they killed and burned a baby, raped the teen girl and all manner of other deathly things done. The tribes were circulating what you today call 'Racism' and 'Racist attitudes' among the so-called Native Americans so the Racism was within and coming from the Indians, and yet it was complicated. Not all Indians were like that, not all Indian leaders and chiefs were like that. You had what I call 'the War Chiefs' and the "Peace Chiefs'. There was a real split and multiple tribes each with variations on all these dimensions. It was not a simple straight forward answer, but the attack, if depicted in that manner was NOT propaganda. Real events happened like that. Not just once, but many times through the American West and across its decades of American expansion and pre-American expansion in the days when French and Spanish and Russians roamed the area and 'Mountain Men were the few 'White Men', but once settlers came in the late 18th and early 19th century, that is when you see more of those events, as the Natives view this often as some transgression to their territory and they were often highly territorial, and held views that today we could characterize as 'racist'. The very term 'White Man' is one originating among indigenous people, not Europeans. The term "Pale Face' is an Amerindian concept and term. Anti-White Racism, if racism existed, was just as present as anything claimed the Europeans might have held.

I'd rather go to the theatre three times to see 1.5 hour long movies than one giant 3 hour movie that doesn't even end, haha! Seriously, movie tickets aren't too expensive. They're not as cheap as they used to be but I think the experience is worth it. Or make a whole day of it and have 15~20 minute intermissions where you can pee and buy more food and drink.
