'Hopeless' Russian offensive capability could put Putin himself under threat | Frontline

"Crimea is under threat, Putin himself is in big trouble politically, as well as the Russians being in trouble militarily"

Michael Clarke is brilliant, but I would suggest that the stability of Crimea under Ukrainian control - or at least a Crimea *not* under Russian control - is, at this point, critical to European and western security. The Ukrainians are 100% correct in insisting this war is not over until Crimea is returned to them. That’s in NATO’s and the EU’s best interest as well.

Zelensky had the chance to prevent this conflict through diplomacy. But he lacked the courage and the conviction. In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas. If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy. Poroshenko, Merkel, Hollande and Zelensky admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements. Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Russia's national security was compromised once nato began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining nato was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns. 20th September, 2021. Ukraine launched military drills with US and nato. NATO is not a defensive alliance. Nato illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster? Zelensky banned all opposition and recently arrested a leading priest. Zelensky also tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland. With respect to Crimea. The Sevastopol naval base is the main base of the Black sea fleet. Losing this base would be catastrophic for the Russian national security. Russia annexed Crimea without a single shot being fired because the majority of the populace in Crimea is ethnic Russian. The results of the Crimean status referendum support this fact. I think it would have been best for Ukraine to give up Crimea. A piece of territory that Khrushchev gifted to Ukraine in 1954 is not worth the destruction we are witnessing today. The Russians don't recognize the legality of the transfer because it did not correspond to the constitution. Compare this situation to the Cuban missile crisis. Similarities: Serious threat to national security. What caused the Cuban missile crisis? In 1961, the US government put Jupiter nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey. April 17, 1961 the U.S. attempted to overthrow Castro in Cuba with the Bay of Pigs invasion (resulted in failure). Subsequently the Kennedy administration planned Operation Mongoose (an extensive campaign of terrorist attacks against civilians, and covert operations, carried out by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in Cuba). In July 1962 Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev reached a secret agreement with Cuban premier Fidel Castro to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. The US became alarmed once they found out about the Soviet missiles in Cuba. This event is know as the Cuban missile crisis. How did the Cuban missile crisis get resolved? Luckily there was a diplomatic resolution and our civilization avoided a potential catastrophe. Khrushchev issued a public statement that Soviet missiles would be dismantled and removed from Cuba. The efforts of John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev brought a more peaceful end to the conflict. Soviet missiles out of Cuba and US nuclear missiles out of Italy and Turkey. Kennedy also guaranteed that the US will not invade Cuba. Current conflict in Ukraine: What caused the conflict? Foreign backed coup in Ukraine (successful 2014). Civil war starts (2014). Attempts to end the civil war fail for 8 years. Talks about Ukraine joining nato. Ukrainian troops being trained to nato standards. Ukrainian troops receiving nato weapons etc. Russia watched as nato actively strengthened the Ukrainian military capabilities. This posed a serious threat to the Russian national security. Zelensky even talked about Ukraine acquiring nuclear weapons. Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”. Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it. Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country. Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. (13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.) Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas. (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence). The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present. Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave. I wish to mention other instances where Ukraine has deliberately targeted civilians. Countless people have been eliminated via acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) and Denis Kireev (member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations) just to name a few. The terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (unsuspecting civilian victims of terrorism). I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion. I encourage everyone to do their own research (don't just take my word for it)..

Michael Clarke is one of the most well-spoken and insightful military analysts out there. I largely agree with his assessments. We must continue to support Ukraine -- and, indeed, increase our support -- until Russia is expelled from all Ukrainian territory. As costly as it is to support Ukraine, the costs of not doing so would be far, far greater.

As an artilleryman, the beginning explanation is very well stated. Russia is depending even now on WWII massed artillery tactics putting their artillery systems in jeopardy due to counter fire radar, and stressing their ammunition resupply chain. Whereas the Ukrainians with GPS guided munitions and good fire direction practices are able to be far more effective firing a fraction of the rounds, and preserving their ammunition stocks. This I believe is the key to Ukrainian offensive operations this summer because inaccurate massed artillery is simply not effective against fast moving modern armor systems.

Too many to name. Iraq and Afghanistan are the ones I wish to mention, because they are recent and everyone knows about it. America always claims to defend human rights in order to justify its acts of aggression. I encourage everyone to do their own research (don't just take my word for it).

I encourage everyone to do their own research, don't just take my word for it.

Why do you want those white supremacist Neo-natzi Ukrainian government people in NATO? Ukraine, 4 years ago, had a reputation of being the most corrupt gov in Europe. Maybe, you liked the Ukraine military's civil war against the Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens in the Donbas region? You're siding with dangerous people. Maybe, you are not familiar with the history of that part of the world.

Why would you use that as a reason to bring them into NATO? Either they should be in or not regardless of whether they are more brave than average. However it is this expansion of NATO that has partly caused this problem in the first place and it needs to stop before we all get nuked. Just let Russia keep their territory and agree peace and keep Ukraine neutral and get back to normal life.

I encourage everyone to do their own research, don't just take my word for it...

I am watching this video 4 days on & Bakhmut has fallen to the Russians today & this means Ukraine has lost access to supply their troops in the rest of the Donbas. Also he says that the Russians can’t hit moving targets, while Russia was already hitting multiple ammo dumps, all across Ukraine. These ammo dumps were moving all around Ukraine.

As for Prof. Clarke's proposal at the end of the interview (36:00), that is highly unlikely... 1) It would never be accepted by Putin and the Russians would reject it too. 2) It would not be acceptable to the US who have explicitly stated that their objective is not to return to the 2014 status but rather to put Russia in a situation where it can no longer carry out this type of invasion in the future (Secretary of Defense: Austin).

NATO is not a defensive alliance. They illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We must never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. The US instigated many coups in recent history? Too many to count. I will list a few... 1893 Hawaii, 1933 Cuba, 1953 Iran, 1954 Guatemala, 1960-1965 Congo, 1961 The Dominican Republic, 1963 South Vietnam, 1964 Brazil, 1973 Chile, Australia 1975, 1981-90 Nicaragua, Ukraine 2014 etc. The US has been involved in more than 100 wars and rebellions. Too many to name. Iraq and Afghanistan are the ones I wish to mention, because they are recent and everyone knows about it. America always claims to defend human rights in order to justify its acts of aggression. Their actions are always given a pleasant name in order to encourage public support. “Operation enduring freedom” was the virtuous name given to the unjust invasion of Afghanistan. “Operation Iraqi freedom” was the angelic title for the brutal invasion of Iraq. “Operation unified protector” was the fancy name for the destruction of Libya. The guardians of the universe can do no wrong, since they always fight for “freedom and democracy”.

I encourage everyone to do their own research (don't just take my word for it)....

Totally agree about brining Ukraine into NATO, Russia has to be pushed back out of the areas that it has taken in the past 12 months before that happens, however this will need Putin removed from power. Looking at the alternative leaders that would be fighting to take his place this might put someone even worse into power. It really needs an uprising of new young Russians but most of them have already fled Russia.

NATO is not a defensive alliance. They illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We must never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. The US instigated many coups in recent history? Too many to count. I will list a few..........

As opposed to the Ukranian army shelling the donbass for 8 years? I guess because they were ethnic russians it didn't matter, newsflash it mattered to the Russians. Just like Arabs care about the carnage the "west's" illegal wars in the middle east have caused, like Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya etc. But yeah Putins no worse than any of your leaders who all have foreign blood on their hands.
