In this video I take care of a bunch of shop repairs, including fixing both of my broken Manfrotto Magic Arms (using a 50-cent brass nut and carriage bolt)! All in an effort to get back to the way I USED to film (when we were making episodes every week)! We also introduce OTO7, a robot built specifically for assisting with craft and film projects. :D
I make videos with the help of direct support.

    It’s crazy to me, how many high-end, and otherwise high-quality tools have failure-modes that are seemingly intentional… designed to fail, and integrated into the because 99.9% of people aren’t craffy or determined enough to fix it on their own, leading to more sales, more failures, and so-on. LIVE TO DIY. DIY TO LIVE.

  • @JamesChurchill

    @JamesChurchill

    9 ай бұрын

    It's intentional, but not quite for the reason you think. You can't make things indestructible, and if you make every part equally strong then when a failure inevitably occurs, it can be in a part that is difficult, expensive, or impossible to replace. So good engineers design for that failure, making specific parts weaker so that they'll sacrifice themselves first before a more expensive failure can occur. The knob on these magic arms is trivial to replace (or repair), but if the joint itself had been damaged the whole arm would have been junk.

  • @JeffJeffers0n

    @JeffJeffers0n

    9 ай бұрын

    @@JamesChurchillthat makes no sense, your average person will not be doing a 'trivial' fix involving melting plastic and filing down metal nuts. Even if so, the repair will likely ware down again very soon. The entire design of that thing looks garbage based on the fact it uses plastic for any of its parts. It should be composed entirely of metalic pieces only, especially at the high price it's sold.

  • @trikepilot101

    @trikepilot101

    9 ай бұрын

    @@JamesChurchill If that were the intent, it would be easy to remove the brass nut. It should be held by a set screw or two, not molded into the plastic.

  • @TealDobber

    @TealDobber

    9 ай бұрын

    @@JeffJeffers0nnah, that does make some sense. None is an exaggeration. They may have decided to make the nut strip, instead of the handle crack or the shaft twist. Maybe it was I'll informed. On the other hand, making parts fail to improve sales is legit a thing. But, not always. Reminds me of when features are will work kn a model, but they spend extra to disable it, so you pay more for the one that doesn't have it disabled. I used to support some computers that shipped with colour displays that were disabled in the BIOS. Just a quick switch and you had a colour display. Saved hundreds of dollars.

    A new replacement knob seems to be $16 - not cheap but only 10% of an entire new arm. It wasn't the plastic that failed, so I don't really understand how replacing the plastic with metal would help...

    An OTO-7! That takes me back. I remember rummaging around in our basement storage room--old camping stuff, camera boxes, slide projectors, that kind of stuff. The OTO-7 didn't work; it had some big cracks in the plastic housing like it had been dropped or hit with a hammer or something. I started playing with it, alongside my action figures, because it had such an anthropomorphic design, like a movie robot. A couple days later my dad saw me playing with it and took it away, saying it wasn't for kids. I looked for it a few times, in the storage room, but never saw it again. I pretty much forgot all about that thing until now. Crazy!

    Get a mini split! ❤❤❤❤ I’ve been using them since seeing them in japan in 2004. Anywhere you’d use a window A/C… a mini split is so much better. So quiet, more powerful, and depending on which version, various air cleaning features, auto directional controls…. Not to mention they’re also heaters and dehumidifiers all in one. And they’re much more energy efficient than window A/Cs. Just make sure you mount the outside unit on a nice slab of cement to reduce vibration noise. ❤ Highly recommended!

    Sad how things are made these days. I'm so glad you have the knowledge to fix it yourself. I remember when I was younger an inventor saying something like making a ball bearing (using as example because I don't remember what he actually said) to last a life time is easy. Making one that will break in 5 years, so it has to be replaced.. that's the hard part.

    As long as you don't restrict air flow maybe you could make a sound dampening frame for the AC

    Highly recommend a quieter minisplit. Uses less power too. I put a combination heat pump/minisplit in my small workshop in January and love it. You can turn the fan down low. Love your content.

    We used to have mini-split air conditioners. In the moderate humidity of southern California they would grow mildew inside, and the blower wheel would need to be removed for cleaning. From watching how-to videos here on KZread I have the impression that's annual maintenance in Florida. If it's all humid where you are, make sure to find out how to clean the blower wheel before purchasing.

    Wonderful video Crafsman! I would like to mention it you are fixing to apply heat from a torch to a nut or bolt, be extra double sure that it is not galvanized, or you will be causing lots of harmful vapors

    Hey Crafsman. Mini-split is a good investment. Super quiet and efficient. Got one for my garage workshop and haven't regretted it yet.

    I actually forgot if you already have an SM7b but they do say that's the guy for indirect noise exclusion without having to think about post-processing etc. Not sure how convenient it would be for you at the table though, I think you need it to be fairly close to source (Your CrafsMouth)

    Great inspo!! Love how you replaced the screw and nut, I think I may need to do something similar to my wobbly barber chair. Also I 100% agree to the mini split! Got a double head 3ton installed last summer and it’s the best thing we’ve done! It’s way quieter than a window unit and more powerful. Ours was a bit pricey due to some needed electrical work, but totally worth it 👍

    Manfrotto where's Bilbo when you need him ? 😂 Nothing Steady Craftin can't fix! Otto 7 kinda scares me with that voice of his when he slows himself down almost like he might be possessed 😂 but he's still a cute lookin classic 80's vibed Robot for sures! 👍🏼 Glad you having more fun at the Workshop! Bless!

    Loved this episode - might want to check to see if there are any firmware updates for OTTO7. Also, make sure he is plugged into a surge strip - you don't want any lighting to bring him to life like it did to Johnny5. xoxo
