Many years ago at my wedding we had every table photographed. It was a treasure because shortly after (within a year) several people passed away. We had the last photos of some precious relatives. Also. Not everyone hangs on the dance floor.

The photographer should have known this. I work at a wedding venue and have an associate in photography. Worked 70 plus weddings. You go to the tables and get shots of them before and then every table once the are almost finished eating. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t someone’s assigned table. Take the pictures of everyone at tables, guarantee yourself a shot of everyone at least once.

I wish I'd had 2 photographers. One for candid shots and one for the set up/staged photos. I only had the one photographer (my brother) and he only took staged photos. This was because we were having him take photos of everyone who came to the reception before they signed our sign-in book, which was also a photo album. I love that I have photos that match the names in my sign-in album, but he got zero photos of the decor, meals, atmosphere, etc. I'm sure he would have gotten more if I'd told him specifically that that's what I wanted, but I didn't, so he didn't. To make up for it, I reached out to everyone who came to my receptions asking for any and all photos. From that one request, I received some of the best pictures and some of my favorite candid shots. However, there are still entire chunks of our wedding celebrations that are blank and forgotten because there are no pictures 💔

My best advice when it comes to getting pictures. Have a rollcall. You don’t want to accidentally forget not to get a picture with your grandmother. So I wrote down every picture I wanted. Me with the minister and then my husband with the minister. The minister with us together. Photos with all the bridesmaids and each individual with us. Sounds tedious but you don’t want to forget to take a picture with your grandparents after they passed.

I’ve been to weddings where they photographed people as they came in, kind of like a red carpet moment without the carpet and only one photographer but like they got nice photos of all the guests that way, also a different wedding had a photo booth that printed the little photo booth photos for the guests and also gave digital copies to the couple, that was really cool and creative.
