no, can power the receiver with the BEC if you upgraded all the servos to 8.4v capable, only need the bypass if you worried about the steering servo nut they factory steering servo junk

Do I need a bec if I change from stock hopping servo in 64 with the power hobby 209 servo?

Not if your after same power as before. The factory internal BEC is pushing 7.4v but the hop servo really come to life at 8.4v that a external bec is needed to hit
