    It’s actually very impressive how Steven Spielberg was able to take a story where Peter Pan grows up and make it work perfectly while sticking close to the mythology of the original book at the same time

    Captain Hook is supposed to represent adulthood and the reason he hates clocks is because it reminds him that he is getting old. This whole movie is about Peter metaphorically fighting his own adulthood (represented by Hook) so that he could reconnect with his inner child and repair his relationship with his children.

  • @TheOffkilter

    @TheOffkilter

    another interesting symbolism in the story is the crocodile that swallowed a clock is always chasing Hook everywhere he goes so it represents how adults are always running away from anything that reminds them that they are going to die.

  • @TheOffkilter

    @TheOffkilter

    @@matt_canon I mean in the novel Smee was actually very kind and honest, total opposite of Hook. Also wasnt the butler like first mate thats hes always been depicted that was the actual first mate, Gentleman Starkey. I imagine Disney picked Smee instead for that role because its a much more goofy name. Those two were the only pirates not killed or thrown into the sea by Pan and the Lost Boys after the final battle. As far as the symbolism, I dont know. Not everything in the novel has some it is a childrens book after all.

    Yeah. It's too bad they were too busy editing out most of the enjoyable parts and cared less about taking time to highlight the emotional connections that really made this movie what it is. They acknowledged them, but didn't take the needed time to connect with this film on that level. I really thought they would, but they failed miserably. It made me sick to my stomach that they stayed on the very surface with one of the greatest Peter Pan films. I saw this several times in the theatre when released.

You do realize that the original film that’s shown on Disney+ has a warning telling people that the movie contains very offensive scenes in which First Nations People are viewed in a very stereotypical way. Not to mention that when the original film was made and released it was catered to nearly an all white audience, but if you don’t see this as a problem, then you have officially let everyone know who you really are. I'm still perplexed to this day why it got bad reviews. I used to watch it over and over as a kid and never got sick of it. It's a visual feast for the eyes. Especially the end battle scene and food fight scene when Pan starts to remember, and was always gutted when Rufio died (he reminded me of a kid at school). It showed despite he was arrogant Rufio had a good heart and just craved love and guidance - a father figure like Pan.

    Peter cut off Captain Hook's hand and fed it to the croc. That same croc had swallowed a clock. It decided it wanted the rest of Hook, so it followed his ship around. The ticking was how Hook knew the croc was nearby, and why he grew to fear the ticking. Of course people will point out that it is more symbolic of Hook fearing time passing and death. Those things may be true. But this is actually the history of the character.

    This is truly my absolute favorite Peter Pan film hands and hook down. I’ve actually been involved in two productions of Peter Pan. The first one was a version that we had wrote based on the book and I was Smee in that one. The second production I did was the actual Broadway production and I was one of the pirates. I recently learned that the moment Peter choose a Thud as his successor, the reactions are genuine. Spielberg and Robin Williams knew who would get the sword and kept quiet about it. So none of the Lost Boys ever knew who would be the successor. At the 25th anniversary, Dante Bosco as well as the other last boys squeeze backed into their lost boy costumes and honored Robin Williams, since he was not there to share a happy moment with them. RIP Robin Williams. ✨⚔️🏴‍☠️🧚🏻🐊💚💛❤️🖤

It went something like this: Tinkerbell: "Just one happy thought Peter! How about puppies?" Peter: "They try to commit suicide under your feet." Tinkerbell: "Cotton candy?" Peter: "Disgusting! Gets everywhere and impossible to clean." Tinkerbell: "M&M's??" Tink was growing desperate. Peter: "Melts on your couch, not in your hand." As always, keep em coming!

    I love this movie. I love the fact that (in the past) the crocodile loved the taste of Hooks hand so much that he came back to life just long enough for one more meal. In the stories the crocodile had swallowed a clock and that's how Hook could hear the crocodile coming to try to eat him and that's why Hook hates clocks. Something this movie also reminds us to do is to use our imagination. Peter had to relearn how to use his imagination at the feast.

    J.M. Barry wrote The Adventures of Peter Pan as a play and a book. When it opened in London Barry had the theater owner hold back 10% of the seats as reserved. The theater owner was not happy about it but he did it. the seats were scattered about the auditorium. Berry had arranged the seats to be occupied by children from a local orphanage. The children scattered around the audience laughed at a sheep dog being a nurse made as the 1st scene opened, giving the stuffed shirt London Theater crowd permission to laugh and enjoy the play. It was a hit. J.M. Barry never took a penny of profit from the story or the play. All Profit to this day and any rendition of the story goes to the Orphanage. And so it shall ever be. The Lost Boys Barry was writing about, ... were abducted and exploited children. The Pirates, were the abductors. In Never Land, ... The Lost Boys get to fight the pirates, ...and win.

    A friend of mine when I was in high school was adopted. She got into a fight with her mother and at one point she told her mother, "You're not even my real mother." Very hurtful, but her mother's answer changed the way my friend saw her mother. Her mother said, "No, I'm not your mother. A biological mother is obliged by evolution to lover her child. Biological mothers who did not love their child did not pass their genes to the next generation. Biological mothers don't get a choice. "But adoptive mothers choose to love their children. I chose to love you and I still love you." In that instant her relationship with her mother changed. And my view on adoption changed as well.

    Fun fact about Robin being casted as Peter Pan, years ago he did his own so-called mork & Mindy and there's an episode where he was in a mental institution visiting a penpal claiming to be Peter Pan, and at the end of the episode the man claiming to be Peter Pan said that Mork was more like Peter Pan than he ever was. And then about twenty years later he ends up becoming Peter Pan himself. So a lot of people felt that in the seventies they called it where Robin was going to be Peter Pan.

    In this film the clocks remind Hook that time is always passing and with it he gets older and older. The lost boys do not age because they chose to never grow up.

    For whatever reason this movie didn't do well in ratings despite having a great cast, an amazing set, a beautiful musical score, and endless amounts of charm. Now it's an underrated treasure that teaches people that growing old can still be a magical experience.

    Yes, I knew there was gonna be at least one person on here saying “underrated” because it’s become everybody’s favorite word! Since you’re so infatuated with “underrated” you should start a cult where you can worship it and everybody else on KZread can join you

    You may not see this comment and you may not take suggestions here but there is a film called Red Dog that I believe you will all love. It's an Australian film that is based on a true story about an Australian Kelpie. The film is legendary in Australia but unknown outside of Aus. It is one of the only movies that makes me cry my eyes out while also making me smile every time I watch it because it is beautiful, funny, sad and inspiring. I hope that you will give this comment a glance so that you may one day watch it.

    I am still waiting for Viki and Lia to watch my favorite Robin Williams movie Good Will Hunting. Ellie and Michelle absolutely loved it. Spielberg's original idea for this movie was to have Michael Jackson play Peter and it was going to be a musical with 8 original song and dance scenes. He had to completely rework the script for Robin
