I went to Fête de Vodun (VooDoo Festival) in Ouidah, Benin. I saw the Zangbetos (VooDoo Dervishes) whirling around as well as dancers & drummers at the VooDoo Snake Temple. It was incredible.

The Protagonist is a black teenage girl who finds herself in the initiation process of an old boys club on a college campus in North Carolina. It deals a lot with the generational aftereffects of the history of race in America, especially how different people utilize magic. Most of the Black Practitioners are known as "Rootcrafters" and they tend to refer to magical energy as "Root" where their white counterparts refer to it as "Ether." This video was able to to show me that the practices in the book were based on real practices more than I had initially realized.

Without Voodoo, they wouldn’t exist. There’s nothing wrong with someone studying the Roots of all religions practice around the world which is Voodoo. Christ is not the only way. It’s just a middle point. Why go to the middle when you can just go directly to the top. I digress.

The difference between hoodoo and vodou is the same difference between Haitians and African Americans. One was taken to Haiti while the other to America, but both are African in origin. Hoodoo has it's God to as you stated. Christ is often the chief deity. Haitian Vodou also makes use of Christ as well as other saints and holy people of Christianity.

@@stanleydouge2803 I'm afraid they do my friend. You may not have seen it practiced in dis manor, but some do. I can't speak on his exultation and correlate within the practice, but he's definitely there.

It is good to know that there is a difference between hoodoo and voodoo meaning that movie with religion, and Hulu is more like a craft, and I like the fact that it is nature based practically both of them, and it seems that it is more in tune to stewardship of the Earth. I really like this video.

I'm glad I actually grew up in the culture and know how to fact check for myself. How is hoodoo not a religion, yet you say it's practiced alongside a religion? How is Vodun not focused on the natural world when most of the lwa have an elemental nature? There is NO way this information was gathered or researched from an actual vodousaint or rootworker. I get sicka the commercialization of it all. The real question is why do we still need these type of practices, here in the U.S. today, a "developed" country? ..also no shade to the host, she just here for her lil coin. However, the writers and producers come across as very out of touch and the commentary comes off as "outsider looking in". For anyone reading this, know that BOTH Hoodoo and Vodun (in they're true forms) are closed practices to people who are not of African descent. And also closed off from the descendant who would help "the man" enslave us. This is why Haitian Vodun exist AND its cousin Hoodoo. Whether the hoodoo, comes from the Bayou, the Delta, the Ozarks, Appalachia, etc... it's main purpose has ALWAYS been liberation, healing, and protection from dwights.

Vodun is a way of life. You live it everyday you wake up. With research which I have done for years as well as asked family who has practiced wayyyyyy before I was here. Hoodoo is more so "work" spells etc. Take it how you want to take it but how you live ot is just that ....HOW YOU live it. My ancestors didn't practice the same way your did or the next person. So you can't say what is true and not truth or how someone should do this and that. I learnt from my ancestors and will stick to that as you should with yours

People in church practice Hoodoo. Plenty of Hoodoo practicioners go to church on Sunday to praise white Jesus. & the practice rootwork that same night. If you were raised around it as you say, then you would know this. As for the Vodun comments, she's off base with that.

I disagree with some parts of this explanation/ differentiation. 1st being that voudun is an _African American_ spiritual practice. Which mostly, it is not. Secondly, voudun is not centered around the _worshipping_ of the lwa but encompasses elements of herbalism, natural altruistic healing & alchemy along with building a relationship to the lwa. While building relationship to the lwa are important many people practice without devotion to the lwa. Also, many who practice still have a relationship to god/the catholic church- but many also don't.

"Vo" means Free and "Du" means a nation or a people in the Evwheh and Fon languages in Ghana, Togo, Benin and the south-western part of Nigeria. Evoa? means are you free? Vovoli, means there's freedom or Liberty. These words are part of the living words in the day to day language of the living people of West Africa. Amerika dua means the people of the nation of Amerika. Now adding the two words together becomes VODU . VoDu brings liberation and freedom through the harnessing of life forces in herbs , living animals and elements within one's environment. Cooking with herbs is VoDu, using herbs to heal ailments is VoDu. Invoking metal and the air and the water elements to empower you through using and eating some selected herbs and saying of words that have the right "frequency" to the wind or the metal in "GU" is enough to be battle ready as done in Haiti. VoDu is a way of life by living a balanced life with nature for example, there are days the people do not go to the river or the forest so these elements can regain their potents and there are days that there shouldn't be noise making. There are over 37 laws to follow as well . No wonder your western church and its military wing Hollywood gave a bad name to VoDu as "vooodooo".

Yeah, that’s why I refused to inherit the priesthood not grandfather left me voodoo Because of my Christian faith, but I unintentionally still practice tomorrow because I am an herbalist and I find that knowledge very beneficial, but I don’t enter twine it with spirituality after all, I’ll leave everything that comes to faith to Christ And the wisdom he gives me

Haitians… got to be some of the most luckiest blessed HIGHLY favored people on the planet. Whatever they’re doing must be really working bc look at Haiti. A land of abundant milk and honey. All the hurricanes, earthquakes and destruction is just Mother Natures way of saying “You’re Welcome”.😊

Well you can thank slave masters to blame for that they forced out people to have to add Christianity into it bc if they were caught not being "Christian" they would be whipped or beat so they had to add Christianity into it to survive

It's true but voodoo in West Africa is a philosophy that also incorporates medicine with herbs. In Latin America, it's a religion.

I always thought voodoo was the original magic religion from haiti and hoodoo was the modernized version cos of the word hood in hoodoo 😂
