Hong Kong Mahjong with my Mother in Law: Part 4 - Setting Up to Play

Фильм және анимация

Hi there,
At long, long last I have finally finished editing this video (and yes, my mother-in-law makes her long-awaited second appearance! :)
I know the audio may not be 100% smooth, and we're still looking down on your guys (not in THAT way, but literally the camera is a bit below eyesight), so apologies for that.
This was our first time using two cameras and OMG was it ever challenging to take like 2 hours of us messing about and cut it into an under-10-minute video that I hope makes sense.
My mother-in-law really loved doing this and is looking forward to doing more, so please show her some love with a like for the video or a comment down below! TIA!
I really hope to get Part 5 (playing the actual game) up by the end of this week ... fingers crossed!)
Many thanks and much appreciation for your patience, and please remember to like and subscribe!
Happy learning,
Sue Marguerite (and my mother-in-law! :)

Thank you for making these videos, they are super helpful and interesting. I always struggle to explain what and how mahjong works to my non-HK friends and really wish to promote this to them. Glad that I see your video on youtube!

Thank you! I miss Hong Kong a lot. It's easy to forget about Hong Kong being in the USA for nearly three years now (which I CANNOT believe!!) -- and for the record, the same is true of the US, when I'm in HK!) but I am feeling the pull to go back!

Hi Sue and NAAIH NAAI Me and my girlfriend are new to mahjong and we are loving your mahjong videos, we have learnt so much thank you. You teaching style is so relaxed and easy to follow. But we do have a couple of question's. 1, If I'm sitting in the east seat and I'm the dealer and north wins. The dice pass to my right to south and not to North (who won) is this right? 2, We have played four hands in the first east round. As we move in to the south round does the first deal go to the south seat or do I in the east seat deal first again in the south round? 3, Does the wind indicator move around the table or stay with the first person who dealt the entire game? I love the other content on your channel too and have even picked up a little cantonese. Some times at work I have you playing in the background as I find the cantonese language interesting and your style is brilliant to listen to. Take care, stay safe and keep smiling 😃 Joe

I had no idea you could play mahjong with 3 people!! In our family we'd only get a table going if we had 4 players.

It's not as fun or challenging, but it can be done and if you don't have a fourth "leg", it at least allows you to play!

I don't think you can do the "Jump" with only three players. It works with four because the East player is basically taking their last (14th) tile draw early for convenience. With only three, that means East would be jumping too far and drawing the WRONG tile. It's very important to always draw in the exact order.

Going counter-clockwise from East, you have North, West, and South. But that's based on Western maps, where you look down upon the land from the sky. In China, you look up from the ground at the heavens, so from East you have going counter-clockwise: South, West, then North; hence, ESWN for Mahjong. I've said this before, but here you go, in any case. :-)

Hi Fabian! I’m hoping once I post the actual game it will all come together and make sense for you. Stay tuned ... it’s taking me a lot longer (like A LOT longer!) to do the actual game video, but it’s slowly coming together and I’ll have it up just as soon as I can! Thanks for leaving a comment and let me know once Part 5 is up what you think! For me, I still feel like I’m learning strategies ... but being able to get the hang of it enough to play a casual fun game won’t take long at all, I think, especially once you see the game being played. 😁

Thank you! Looking forward to the next part! Jump-the-wall seems confusing haha. Does the person who has 14 tiles keep 14 throughout the game? Happy Mid-Autumn festival for yesterday to you and your mother-in-law! :)

Thanks so much!! I wasn’t actually able to be in HK for Mid-autumn Festival but we did manage to have our family dinner before I had to leave for the USA (jury duty! 😅) I’ll be back next week! 🎉 Good question ... the person who has 14 tiles discards first so then he/she is down to 13 like the rest of the players (until you win of course and then you win with 14.) Working to get the next one done - it’s a little bit easier because I can’t really cut anything out since it’s the actual game but I’m sure there will be parts where we ramble or whatever and then I’ll have to see what I can do - my mom-in-law likes to ramble as much as I do haha ☺️

Hi Sue! Hope jury duty went well! Ah that makes sense! I was trying to teach myself mahjong a while back and never quite understood what happens to that 14th tile. Haha! I'm fine to watch a long video by the way, so don't cut too much! :)

😅😅😅 to say it’s taking me longer than expected is the understatement of the century but I promise it will be worth the wait!! 🎉🎉 I’ve managed to cut it (part 5) down to 29 mins and have about half of it subtitled with English and as much Cantonese as I can to explain things my mother-in-law is saying ... Subtitles are just so unbelievably tedious - and I’m still jet-lagging from the long flight back to HK on Thursday! 🤪🤪🤪 I’ll persevere though and will get it up soon, promise! Thanks for the gentle reminder! 🙏😁
