I have always had a 20 inch water filter in the water supply line . My last cannister lasted 5 years. Do not use a softener filter. Another suggestion was to feed the humidifier from the way water tank, which seem to have less minerals to add to the build up inside the tank. :-)

Any reason you can't take the old canister, descale it and have it as a spare? Any cleaning methods/recommendations for the water solenoid?

The cylinder light is still on after I replaced the canister. Any trouble shooting ideas? I have drained and powered off several times.
